Feed corn burns in woodstoves like coal. If Fritos do have corn in them, that`s why it burns so long and hot. The added oil is just good for the initial start.
Just take a tin can and take some old scrap 100% cotton cloth an toss it in the can. Then take some of the bacon or stove grease or any cooking oils and pour it in the can and stop when its about one inch from the top of the cloth. Then dip the exposed cloth in it briefly an pull it back up an light it. It will wick up the fat and in a few minutes will get very hot an become one giant can of flame
I used to do this as a kid with potato chips. Its the fat and oils that burns so well. Really fatty and oily potato chips work even better. Bacon grease will also ignite and burn hot.
Cool idea, I do however try to stay away from Frito-Lay anything. It is bad enough as I am being able to stop doves in flight with just my rugged (BAD) looks. My nick-name is Squatchy-Foot and often get mistaken for a civilized Squatch in the bush, adding Fritos with-in arms reach would be very very bad for me :) I am gonna have to try Ramon noodles dipped in talo :-)
Hey, thanks for this! I heard about the frito tinder trick & came to see if it had been demonstrated on YouTube. Great job! got a crush on you by the way. I like long walks on the beach... super handsome & stuff. 87% sure we're soulmates.
What a great multi-tool, what you don't use to start a fire with you can use to set deadfall traps for critters. I heard nutria=(sp?) if that how it's spelled are not bad to eat. Us people on the westcoast envy where you live, we can have pop guns and you guys can light up an area if you wanted to. As always thanks for showing us stuff. Hey do something on canning, or pickling, want to do green beans and need help if you know anything about it. later babe. oh and thanks.
@isaacbalwit Kerosene is heavy and hard to pack. Plus it burns hot but very quickly so you must get your fire established quickly when dealing with it which may prove difficult with things like wet materials and can take quite a lot of the heavy liquid. A 5 minute slow burn that is a light weight, easily store-able, non-explosive, safe, and reliable is a better survival option.
shouldn't burn your food supply.....just save your dryer lint or get some cotton balls and dip them in Vaseline and pack in a baby food jar (can get around 50 balls in a single jar ) each ball will burn for 5 minutes
We don't have these in Britain... I wonder if I could find something similar? It'd make it super easy to light the fire once the winter kicks in. You really are very educational, arn't you? You ought to be a teacher or something similar :)
to amuse myself as kid i used to throw chips of greasy generic ruffles [from 99 cents store] into the campfire to watch it burn a cool bluish-green flame...never realized i could use that in a survival situation, thanks
