Maybe , still Ashes to Ashes has Gene on it that is enough for me. Nice to meet you again Dr. after our chat about the Dark Knight, remember?, I love Ashes to Ashes, as well as Life on Mars, they are one of a kind products ,original , wel poaced, acted, etc. US. always make their versioons of anything that makes a mark, only they are lower in quality, in Movies, Series, etc, they are unoriginal.
@Drwhodunnit1973 I found that all the 70s references in Life on Mars were very subtle and well placed whereas Ashes to Ashes seemed to say "by the way did I mention this is set in the 80s" about every 5 minutes.
@ProcolHarum1967 Not too enthralled by AtA, at the moment. It deprives LoM of being ambiguous. Gene's career being saved by Sam, for instance, rings hollow if you see the AtA finale. ymmv, of course.
We are led to believe he died in a car crash in 1980 as Ray said in Ashes to Ashes.

@JadesVidz Have you seen him in 'State of Play' from 2003? Also features Phil Glenister. Just watched the first disc last night. He plays a very different character from either Sam or the Master. Truly fantastic actor.
This was my favourite TV show of the decade. I was really lucky to watch it when it was first broadcast, because I don't think it's possible to get quite the same thrill by buying the DVD's, even if you're a new viewer who knows almost nothing about the show. Just by having those DVDs, before you even watch it you'll automatically know a certain fact about the show which ...well let's say it works far better if you don't know that fact, in my opinion.
Both the BBC and USA versions of the start of the series are AWESOME. Excellent use of the "Highway in the Sky" as a reference point. here and the Twin Towers in NY.
life on mars was on the bbc (british broadcasting corporation) which nower days is the only non-commercial broadcaster in the whole world, and thats a fact.
In Italy the version of Life on Mars Uk has had great success while the U.S. not so much, and in September there will be a Italian version of the life on mars acqistato rai has the rights to remake a shot Italian in Rome in the 70
Anyone seen the opening of the Spanish version? It's a complete copy, even has the bit with the blue car tooting at him and the Spanish actors even look like John Simm and Philip Glenister.
I am american, and when the american LOM came out, I absolutely loved it. Then one day, i happened along an episode of the British version of LOM. I watched that episode, and fell in love. As I kept watching the american series, through all the mistakes that they made I remained hopeful that the ending would stay the same. Then they botched that completely, and made me realise what a waste of time they're version was. BBC def. better. No doubt about it.

just watched the first ep of ashes to ashes it says sam drove into a river while chasing somebody and is dead how could they kill him off like that couldn't he have just left though they do say they didn't find the body so he may still be alive
You know, I thought the same thing when I started watching (and subsequently stopped watching) A2A. They had no need whatsoever to kill off Sam like that. Simm was not going back to the show, I don't think, and I believe we all knew that. Why do that to such a well-liked character? Agh, I just could't keep watching after that.
because it would have been unexplainable to have sam (1973) live on into the future and met sam (2006). how would you explain that a parallel self is working at the same org. as your other self? if they both met up while both are working for the london police, how are you going to explain the same name, same looks, same guy, but one is older (sam 1973), and the other is younger (sam 2006). but i liked sam, and it was 'sad' to hear he actually died in both lives. i liked LOM.

the 2006 sam worked in manchester because when he was hit by the car that was manchesters highway in the sky or ring road above him and if sam didn't die they probley still would have gone to london because genes misses left him and therefore never meeting sam in 2006 they would have had more of a chance meeting alex after she died
to me sam never died. becoz ashes to ashes should never have been made i would rather they brought in a different actor to play sam if john simm didnt want to play this fantastic part. this show was perfect why change it
He'd look A BIT different, more than thirty years older. Sam/the writers are clever. I'm sure they'd figure out someway. Anways, he'd probably be retired by then (he'd be around sixty I think, not optimal for engaging in police raids) or something, to avoid himself, b/c actually he DOESN't want to stop himself getting hit by the car and meeting all the characters we cherish and love.
they only create a USA version because we can't view the British version here, so they want to get it to America, and b/c i never saw the original, i like the USA version very much, but when i saw the Twin towers, damn did that hit me hard!
britain invented the telivision so where would the world be without that so there for britain inverted tv so fuck off britain also invented the phone which ppl used to make the mobile phone which ppl use to text friends but u wouldn't know about that would u
i never said USA invented the TV, i said it in a way as we paved the way fopr ntertainment and we are the entertainment capital of the world!! You guys relaly didnt expand on movies, tv and entertainment as liek we did!
oh, i thought the original version ended in its second season? I don"t know why it got cancelled! There could be dozens of reasons, maybe peopel are just not into it, we have A LOT of shows on here and peopel stick to their 7 year runing show and don;t feel like getting involved in another show, unlike me, i love to watch shows thats why i watched LOM, and i will miss it dearly!
yea, the british one just got itself a new title called "ashes to ashes" & it was set in the 80's...i mus say, some american shows deserve so much more time than 7 years, like the spranos for example...6 seasons seemed way to little =(
same as friends, that could have gone much further, even after 10 years
Yea i know, but you have to respent the actors wishes, they have been stuck on the same set and sotry for 10 years, some want to go onto new projects, but yea, i loved those shows and i am sadly ganna miss my favorite show of all which is ending in 2010, Lost! :( lol whats your favorite shows? And u see, u get USA shows by u but we do not get Brit. shows here, thats why they make remakes i think lol
Yea i understand that...my favourite shows really are the ones that dont run any more (N) for example, the sopranos, friends, that 70s show, curb your enthusiasm...incase you havnt guessed im on your side here btw, LOL
americans make waaay better shows than us brits, lol.
i think out of the shows that are made and are aired here, i like roughly...7 of the 800
one thing i must say, maybe its just what ive heard, cos ive only been over the states once, and i was 7...so i didnt watch too much late night tv, but your broadcasters seem alot stricter than ours, in terms of what can be shown, what words can be said...that kinda stuff
oh, well, from what i'm used to, i tihkn that some of them are very 'goofy' and nice, but with rules, they cannot say liek fuck, shit, damn, etc, no curse words allowed! and you cannot say 'negative' things and you cannnot say your own opinion on news stories! Why? what kind of rules to your have? do you mean like late night TV as in Jay Leno or latenight TV as in the news lol
just because it isn't on and the usa version is doesn't make it worse it didn't stop because nobody atched it it stopped becuse john simm(sam tyler) quit
This is one the best scenes I have ever seen on TV. Especially, the use of the song when Sam sits up and then stands.. very powerful. the song throughout... brilliant....
I know Richard the man I love is really busy but I wish he would watch this - det1992 I agree with you. For an opening scene for a tv series on the first episode this is indeed the most powerful I haver ever seen. The concept behind this show was absolutely brilliant. It makes me realize I am not the only one living who lives in their daydreams. I thought at one time Doctor Who with John Simm as the Master was the greatest scene of all time in tv history but after seeing Life on Mars I changed.
The americans just made theirs. Its not bad but I still prefer the POME 1. Y the fuck do americans have to copy POME and Aussie shows anyway they never get them right. Fuckin retards

fuck you! We invented movies and tv shows so fuck off! You didnt have to say that asshole! andyway, we make everything better then ur original u fucking imature fuck!
Yeah u have invented movies but u didnt invent this did u. C the reason americans like u never understand british and Australian hunor is because americans r so far up there ass that they dont know shit about the outside world u narrow minded lil american cunt. What the fuck would u know anyway. Americans tend to steel other shows and fuck them up badly. Look at Kath and Kim. thats australian and u fucked that up. Here i have a question 4u. Whats the capital of Australia?
ok, calm down, you don't have to get so pissed off!! We did nothign to you, its not us, its the producers u stupid sterotypical assholes!! We did nothing, talk to the producers not the citizens!! You don;t have to call us names and shit and we do no a lot abotu the world, we learn about it every fucking day in school asshole, its called WORLD HISTORY!!!!! the capital is Canberra!
umm ok lol, ty? lol, and i hope you don;t think all Americans are 'stupid' because u asked a few what the capital of Australia is lol, and please, don;t think everybody is liek Bush, b/c we're not, we hate him! :D
The story is a bit different other than the first episode which was a near facsimile of the original. The UK one is superior, not least because of Simm, and the longer running time. But in the American remake's defence, there is a very interesting twist in the ninth episode that I would rate as big a surprise as when Sam got the Hyde 2612 call. I'm keeping an open mind about the US version's development.
A fantastic introduction to a seminal piece of drama - Life on Mars is one of the most compelling shows of recent times, and long may it be remembered for it's sublime quality!
So Im side by side comparing the BBC and ABC versions of this and I do think the American shots in the car were better. I think it was better after he got hit that they panned up to show him from above. I didn't like the going into 1973 sequence as much, and I think it was cooler when they showed the Twin Towers.
For dramatic reasons, I preferred the longer scene with John Simm (obviously the US could not do that with the shorter running time for the ads) but I do agree with you about the World Trade Center shot. That was very well done and given our recent history, it had greater impact.

Amercians stopped using the term "mobile" in the 1980's ..the new version uses the word "cell" ..the 1973 policeman thought he was trying to sell something ..much funnier .
Then go watch the crappy yankee rip off version then! while we sit here and watch the great, well planned british version. Tbh we shouldnt let the burger munchers ruin our programmes lol :D
the USA version is in YC and it just killed me when they showed the Twin Towers, i only watch the show b/c i get to see those beautys again, but the USA version is good, so is the original BBC version as well
right guys, just saw the pilot US version n i personally don't think its thats great. much of the script is the exaxt same as this one but just doesn't really work. the time travel sequence isn't as good and the US gene hunt can't touch the UK Gene Hunt!
There'll be a new TV show based on "Life on Mars" air in the US on October 9th, 2008 on ABC. It'll make my Thursday nights good. I hope it's really great and authentic to the 1970s.
so jAmi ???? watch yer bRit shit- OK ? and really love the fact that you even have to have a freeekin LICENSE to OWN A BLEEEEEEEEEEDIN tv !!!! HOW MUCH is it NOW ????? LMFAO.

comparing this to a tv show like lost the reasons why this better
1) its simple guy gets hit by car wakes up in 1973 not passengers wake on island with smoke monster
2) it ended after 16 eps lost is still ongoing over 100 eps just finish it yes it was popular but end it when its popular
3) the eps are 1 hour uninterrupted i watched it in the states ads every 5 mins not an exageration
4) the show rarely plays music it doesnt have an orchestra playing in the background. i know when to feel sad

yea, the british one just got itself a new title called "ashes to ashes" & it was set in the 80's...i mus say, some american shows deserve so much more time than 7 years, like the spranos for example...6 seasons seemed way to little =(
same as friends, that could have gone much further, even after 10 years
uploader2k7 3 years ago
Yea i know, but you have to respent the actors wishes, they have been stuck on the same set and sotry for 10 years, some want to go onto new projects, but yea, i loved those shows and i am sadly ganna miss my favorite show of all which is ending in 2010, Lost! :( lol whats your favorite shows? And u see, u get USA shows by u but we do not get Brit. shows here, thats why they make remakes i think lol
HeyYou711 3 years ago
Yea i understand that...my favourite shows really are the ones that dont run any more (N) for example, the sopranos, friends, that 70s show, curb your enthusiasm...incase you havnt guessed im on your side here btw, LOL
americans make waaay better shows than us brits, lol.
i think out of the shows that are made and are aired here, i like roughly...7 of the 800
haha
uploader2k7 3 years ago
haha thank you very much, and yes i agree as well!! :D
HeyYou711 3 years ago
HAHA,
one thing i must say, maybe its just what ive heard, cos ive only been over the states once, and i was 7...so i didnt watch too much late night tv, but your broadcasters seem alot stricter than ours, in terms of what can be shown, what words can be said...that kinda stuff
uploader2k7 3 years ago
oh, well, from what i'm used to, i tihkn that some of them are very 'goofy' and nice, but with rules, they cannot say liek fuck, shit, damn, etc, no curse words allowed! and you cannot say 'negative' things and you cannnot say your own opinion on news stories! Why? what kind of rules to your have? do you mean like late night TV as in Jay Leno or latenight TV as in the news lol
HeyYou711 3 years ago
Our rule is, after 9 o'clock..ANYTHING GOES!
lmao, i think our broadcasters will do anything to get the veiwers, they say yes to anything short of actual snuff. LMAO
uploader2k7 3 years ago
just because it isn't on and the usa version is doesn't make it worse it didn't stop because nobody atched it it stopped becuse john simm(sam tyler) quit

This is one the best scenes I have ever seen on TV. Especially, the use of the song when Sam sits up and then stands.. very powerful. the song throughout... brilliant....
det1992 3 years ago 2

HeyYou711 3 years ago
Yeah u have invented movies but u didnt invent this did u. C the reason americans like u never understand british and Australian hunor is because americans r so far up there ass that they dont know shit about the outside world u narrow minded lil american cunt. What the fuck would u know anyway. Americans tend to steel other shows and fuck them up badly. Look at Kath and Kim. thats australian and u fucked that up. Here i have a question 4u. Whats the capital of Australia?
BigAussieBloke69 3 years ago
ok, calm down, you don't have to get so pissed off!!
HeyYou711 3 years ago
Holy shit u actually got the capital right. UR the first american to do so.
BigAussieBloke69 3 years ago
umm ok lol, ty? lol, and i hope you don;t think all Americans are 'stupid' because u asked a few what the capital of Australia is lol, and please, don;t think everybody is liek Bush, b/c we're not, we hate him! :D

they have their own vversion....its the same story nd all apart from its american syle...eg american cars, accents and police
jesstar05 3 years ago
The story is a bit different other than the first episode which was a near facsimile of the original. The UK one is superior, not least because of Simm, and the longer running time. But in the American remake's defence, there is a very interesting twist in the ninth episode that I would rate as big a surprise as when Sam got the Hyde 2612 call. I'm keeping an open mind about the US version's development.

could someone tell me why he is crying at the beginning of the clip? while he's driving...
is it mentioned before?

A fantastic introduction to a seminal piece of drama - Life on Mars is one of the most compelling shows of recent times, and long may it be remembered for it's sublime quality!

After he has to brake suddenly, and he puts the handbrake on. Does it skip a bit? as it looks like it jumps
Greatguitarguy 3 years ago
So Im side by side comparing the BBC and ABC versions of this and I do think the American shots in the car were better. I think it was better after he got hit that they panned up to show him from above. I didn't like the going into 1973 sequence as much, and I think it was cooler when they showed the Twin Towers.
thelawsofphysicsarea 3 years ago

This version is lame compared to the American version. For instance, when he wakes up in 1973 ,there is point of reference (World Trade Center).

watch the american version then and stop watching our version

We had to analyse this part in Media studies. It's a very good clip.
eatfirejones 3 years ago
Wow, really? What were you trying to learn from it?
Occono 3 years ago
Just general camera work / editing / sound. We had to explain why we thought these bits were as they were.
For example: You get a full face shot in the car to show how devastated Sam is.
eatfirejones 3 years ago
Interesting, thanks.

DudeManGuy1019 3 years ago
the USA version is in YC and it just killed me when they showed the Twin Towers, i only watch the show b/c i get to see those beautys again, but the USA version is good, so is the original BBC version as well
HeyYou711 3 years ago
right guys, just saw the pilot US version n i personally don't think its thats great. much of the script is the exaxt same as this one but just doesn't really work. the time travel sequence isn't as good and the US gene hunt can't touch the UK Gene Hunt!
leachy999 3 years ago 5
Phillip Glenister is absolutely awesome as Gene Hunt!

There'll be a new TV show based on "Life on Mars" air in the US on October 9th, 2008 on ABC. It'll make my Thursday nights good. I hope it's really great and authentic to the 1970s.
