I love how listening to a song performed sparks political debates. Get the fuck out of the coffee shops you pacifist hipsters, and actually put your fucking money where your mouth is.
@hallorand9 amen to that.. i've never experienced anything that creates and enhances such a contrast of emotions. Definitely taking this one to the grave.
@welderMTL I wont say I know how you feel, but I'm also familiar with a kind of pain that is unique to me. Just listen to this song like what I do. You will feel better. :)
its not that we hate music today, we hate what it represents, the almighty dollar. Atleast the 90s had some bands where money wasnt everything tool, nin, nirvana, limp bizkit(sorta) and others im just to tired to think. Today I have a hard time finding underground bands, it seems like no band wants to be the underground band, they wanna be the mainstream wanna bees. Its not that no1 from this generation isnttalented, they are just wasting the talent they might have. MTV has won and music died
They have hardly won. Given, the youth of this generation buy into all the shit the media shoves down their throats, but I guess I still hold out hope. I like to think that there are still people, such as yourself I suppose, that think for themselves and not what they want you to. Give it time, I have a feeling there will be a resurgence of the individual in the near future. Either that, or it's all going to hell. In which case, I'll see you there... :)
@Ensomniak86 not all the youth, i don't, i hate listening to rap and techno and anything the media shoves down my throat. I love avenged sevenfold, disturbed, muse, metallica, bullet for my valentine, and anything i headbang to
@TheNineinchsnails You are "having trouble finding" underground bands? Are you some kind of fucking moron? Do you not live within a hundred miles of any cities? Are you unaware that there exist bands who have not produced albums being sold in stores?
May Jeff's grandmother rest in peace. She is at a better place now. My thoughts are with Jeff and his family.

Sometimes things are beyond comprehension or our understanding or simply just does not make sense. There is a bigger picture out there. Just need to find it. It is a life journey and we will know it when we get there. Be strong Jeff...
My post is not meant to spark a discussion or debate regarding religion of any type with anyone. If you re-read my post, it did say "MY TAKE" and it is exactly what that is, my own opinion and interpretation of what Reznor is trying to tell us. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and yours is included. Superheroes or not, good intent comes from within and it is others who can judge our own actions. Yes, I may be wrong but I may be right. If this is it, then make the best of it?
My interpretation of the video is that the flowers and stuff are the things that were precious to Trent Reznor during the time his grandmother was alive ( the song is abt the death of his grandmother - RIP) and that the black snake symbolises death or maybe a new begining for him since its like "shedding old skin". If you look the scales are tipped over with the heavier item being the lesser (stating the unfairness of life)... Well thats what i think anyway pls dont hurl verbal abuse at me
The meaning of life is measured by beauty! Beauty of the mind and soul leads to beauty of the body! Trent Reznor has created more than beautiful things. He made us understand the Beauty behind hatred, rage and insanity created by living in the cage. The light cannot survive without darkness; and the darkness gets lonely without light. I was born to die; but I am given the chance to live as one with myself, nature and my fellow humankind!!!!!
Still is the best thing Trent Reznor ever made. Seriously, a lot of people cite The Downward Spiral as his peak, for one reason or another and I'm not saying it isn't great- because I fucking love The Downward Spiral. But, I genuinely believe Still is a masterpiece.
Last Winter... I would randomly go outside just to walk... Aimlessly... Thinking... Remembering... iPod on, with this song on repeat...
The coldest season, and the coldest time of my life. and just in the nick of time.. this song gave me that unique warmth in my chest. it blanketed me from all of the sheer cold.
@strokemybaggage91 I did something similar a couple of winters ago with the Vitamin Piano series version of the song - it's on iTunes and is, at least for me, extremely winter-y. Look it up.
@strokemybaggage91 I used to work ridiculously long shifts at a hotel around Christmas time, starting at midday and finishing at 4am. I would then have to walk 45 minutes to get to my house in the freezing cold, knowing full well that I have a shift at the same time tomorrow. I would put this song on repeat on my way home, and all my problems melted away. The very idea of my being felt obsolete, and I would walk home with the biggest smile. It was amazing.
I hate snakes, they scare the living crap out of me, but when I see the black snake in the video slowly sliding through the smooth surface, everything just makes sense. The contrats is amazing, I feel peaceful around one of my biggest fears, and I just love it.
this is my favorite version. I like the guitar rift in the begining of the first one but this one matches the tone of the lyrics the feeling of sadness and regret this one gets the lyrics message accross more powerfully
@pawnsofamerica its an amazing spinning rock we live on, flying through space around a ball of fire, in an infinite number of systems repeating themselves, forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever
@pawnsofamerica its an amazing spinning rock we live on, flying through space around a ball of fire, in an infinite number of systems repeating themselves, forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever
this is the version from the "Still" Album. the Quiet Version is the basis on which this version evolved, however this version contains more of an atmospheric and relaxed sound. they are both quite good tho, i recommend them both. as the quiet version has additional vocals by Kim Prevost who is a black female jazz artist in her mid 40's.
This song SLAYS me... Always a big fave live... alas no more live NIN... I sure hope Trent does some solo touring with just him on piano or acoustic guitar and vocal... Thanks for the NIN memories Trent...
NIN is not gone for ever. There was an interview Trent did with Digg and he stated that NIN was going to go away for a while. Also durring the final tour he did say that it wasnt for good. So don't fret too much id say in about 5 to 10 years we'll be seeing NIN returning to the stage
Actually this song is also about his grandmother because the black and white parts of this video were from the original video of this song which was supposed to be Trent at a funeral.
You are right man. "I'm Looking Foward to Joining you Finally" is what they are thinking of. And yes this song is about opium kind of. More of the isolation you feel when everyone goes away after long term use, and how you kind of want them too. Hence the sweetest price you will ever pay the day the world went away. Peace!
Well. Trent is actually an artist. Good artists are abstract and metaphorical. So the poppies can mean a number of things, one of them can be the lack of feeling. And the poppies could be on there because they take away pain as well. But that doesn't mean that it's about heroin and opium.
I agree, while I love the heavy stuff like PHM,Broken[fixed], and TDS, I love the slower more pronounced and musical stuff. It shows a side of Trent that is the musical composer, great stuff.
Thats why I liked NIN when I heard more of them. Trent's music reflects himself and his views on things, whether it be slow and soft, fast and excited/angry or somewhere in the middle.
Am I the only one who saw the Touching Evil pilot when they used this version?

Actually this song is also about his grandmother because the black and white parts of this video were from the original video of this song which was supposed to be Trent at a funeral.

You are right man. "I'm Looking Foward to Joining you Finally" is what they are thinking of. And yes this song is about opium kind of. More of the isolation you feel when everyone goes away after long term use, and how you kind of want them too. Hence the sweetest price you will ever pay the day the world went away. Peace!

it's not actually. do your homework. i've been a fan for a very long time and i know what i'm talking about, unlike yourself.

I don't know, but there's something about that image of the snake slithering in the sand that's awesome. Favorite part in the song/video.
