I'm looking for a single train horn that can hook up to a 1/4" air compressor hose and I don't want to spend much on it. Is there any good ones cheap?
@Fireisfun97 Usually train horns are air hungry and takes a large volume of air to get the full output out of them. How many horns are you planning to put on the system that will be blown all at once? And what valve are you planning to use? If you use a standard valve used in truck cabs, that valve would not be able to pass enough air volume to get a horn like mine featured in this video (K5LA) to its full potential... It would work...but not loud.
@Fireisfun97 Lastly... What kind of budget are you working with? What kind of price range are you trying to stay within? If I knew what kind of budget you are working with, I would be able to direct you better on where you can get the parts you need that would work...
this is great. i want train horns but i didn't know the first thing about air systems. i appreciate your posting this...now i feel at least a little less clueless. great system!
What did you use to keep the spring attached to your roof? I'm too cheap to buy a graham white valve or a replica of one so this info would be highly appreciated.
Hey man might i ask u were u got all the fittings?? i just bought a train horn kit and installed it. its not loud enough so i ordered 2 more shocker s2's But im going to wire them into my other kit i just need fittings. and lines were should i get these plumbing shop? alot of places dont have many fittings out here.
@da94life Home Depot or Lowes will have what you are looking for. Look in the plumbing section of such stores... Just remember this...what is going to flow better? 50 gallons of water through a garden hose or 50 gallons of water through a fire hose? Just make sure when you purchase the hoses to supply the horns that it is rated for the pressures you will be working with on such horns.
I have owned these air horns for over 13 years now and I have only had 2 complaints....In both cases the party whom complained came up to me and wanted to solve it on a man to man basis. I have never had the cops pull me over because of noise ordinances or what not. That is because I don't blow these horns in a malicious matter. Cops have come up to the van to look at them and tell me what a great looking setup I have with a positive approach@CATSr2
I have never blown out a window on my van using this horn or any other windows of other vehicles and/or buildings... There was one time I did break a back window on my van with sound. But that was done with the car stereo and a crazy amount of 15's I had set up in my van. But never with my K5.@ponkkaa
I have a K5H mounted on the roof of my 1990 GMC Vandura, 3/4 ton conversion van. I use a 40 gallon air tank, 3/4" pipe to 3/4" hose. I have an onboard Emglo compressor, it draws about 30 amps, shuts off at 145psi, comes on at 120psi. I actuate the horn with a Graham-White loco horn valve, mounted to the overhead console. There is a significant pitch drop at pressure below 120psi, so I keep the tank at around 145psi. I have had this set up for about 9 years.
@sudsymatt I just happen to be at the right place at the right time... I had a friend who worked for a railroad company up in NY who got me these horns from a retired diesel locomotive.
@sudsymatt Your k3's should have two air ports on each side of your train horn assembly. You have to unscrew though's screws and then search for two other smaller bells made by nathan air chimes. They will attach on the sides of your nathan k3's and then you will have a nathan k5la train horn assembly. Look very carefully at some k3ha train horns on youtube and you will see that there are two smaller types of bells on each end and they can detach off. Hope this helps.
Hey... I am sorry that it took me such a long time to respond to your question but to answer your question ... totally it took me about 6 hours to run all the air lines, hook up the valves, drill the holes in the roof of the van and secure the horns to the roof. Thanks for watching the video... :)@CATSr2
Hey great system I was wondering if you use a nitrous oxide bottle for a high pressure system and using air. These can be pumped up to 195 psi. So what do you think?
@mrguitarguy01 overall...I dropped about 500 including the horns... it cost me less than 200 to set up the air system...Thanks for the comment though.. :)
Some argues the Leslie is a louder sounding horn...and some argue the K5LA is the Mack Daddy of the horns... The fact of the matter is my preference is the K5LA and I do know that both the Nathan and the Leslie are very loud horns to be put on a vehicle. And if blown behind an unsuspecting motorist, It is going to scare the shyt out of that person and get their attention really fast. Thanks for the comment.. :) @alex8006
Just was at the right place at the right time I originaly offered 150... and was declined... so i put another 100 down and he took the offer... The guy that I bought the horns off of was not going to use them. These horns sat in the trunk of his car for nearly 10 years before I took them off his hands...
@djluna96 No problem. If all goes according to plan, they should be installed by early afternoon tomorrow. I will post a video, and I will let you know. Hopefully in the future a set of NathanK5's will end up on my truck, but they are expensive though!!
Thanks for the info...i will look into those....The problem I have is the space in the van is very limited...I have a wall behind the driver and passenger seats wich gives me only about 12 inches of clearance to mount an air tank and compressor...I keep the cargo section cleared so I can use the cargo space for hauling sound equipment to my gigs...
yea i know what u mean i only have limted space to but just to let u know the viair compressor can be mounted anywhere under the car or even under your hood they are weather resistant
I got the truck valve from a truck parts store up in NY... you can use it for the Nathan....but it will not give the necessary air pressure needed to get the full potential out of the horn....
You must be a k5la train horn enthusiast or a fan. I Have a question for you. Is it legal to have and sound these train horns on a highway or a streetway? Since a train horn is really loud and would scare a lot of people on the highways. I`m just asking because i haven`t see a truck or any kind of street vehicle using such horn system arround here.
Thank you and that horn looks cool on the roof of your mini van.
Thanks for commenting on my video. To start off, I can not answer your question accurately for as because I am not familiar with the traffic laws of your area. I do know however where I live, it is perfectly legal as long as you are not sounding the horns maliciously and use it for the intended purpose of warning of on-coming danger.
Great!! So everyone who desires to install train horns on their vehicle will be able to.
In San Diego i saw that many Coaster trains, their operators sound their horns quieter than normal (not at full power to say in other words), this happens in the evenings within downtown. So it´s ok if anybody uses these horns in the traffic and not sounding too loud.
Being that you are in California... I would definitly reserch the laws over there about having such horns on personal vehicles. I do know that if I reduce the pressure to my K5LA, the output db is definitly lower. If you intend to install a train horn on your vehicle...I would make it such that you can control the air pressures going to that horn to control the volume levels. It is just my opinion..
i really dont understand y u cant find a compressor that'll fill your system, if it only takes about a minute to fill it at a gas station u would have no proble finding a compressor that could do that. you just can use the horns when its filling up the tanks.....
Smart setup! I like the idea of filling the tank at a gas station for those who dont have a compressor. How long can you blast the Nathan with that 12 gallon tank? Please let me know. Thanks!
I have done 20 second long blasts and still had about 1/2 the tank filled... I estimate i could probably get about 45 to 50 seconds out of that tank if i hold the valve open fully.. Of course the sound will diminish as the pressure decreases...Thanks for watching the video and the comment .. :)
Thanks for the comment... :) just to let you know the 5/8ths inch hose is just a bit larger than the 1/2 inch line. :) i am going to be upgrading to a much larger line as soon as I get the new air system I am designing..
oh....well I failed the fraction part of math, haha hmmm, I wonder if I could do a 5/8ths setup.. How hard is it to get a airtank that has 5/8's outlets?
I am definitely looking to upgrade the air system to a larger diameter valve and line system... I am also looking to get about 200 psi out of a tank as well... All in good time... Thanks for the comment
