@Galomdp When Bono wrote the song :he woke up one morning and he said at the time that he was sure this could very be a Roy Orbison song! All he could hear was Roy's touch on it! He later gave it to Roy when he came to see U2 with his wife at a concert.
This is a great song but there is something about the much faster tempo in which U2 likes to play that just doesn't fit... I know Edge wrote the song but the uptempo is too... uptempo.
MAN MAN MAN MAN!!! HOW I WISH U2 would have released this on Rattle and HUM!!! This has to be my favorite song from during that era! Roy Orbison you are one lucky dude to get this song! Just freaking love this song so darn much, Also I love this as the ending for ONE! :o) God Bless U2
here Bono hits the high note with more power than in the live Brooklyn version which was released as a B-side single. Is the Brooklyn also from 1989? And why is that one a semitone higher? did they raise the key?
This version is played in Cb major while the Brooklyn version is in C. The Brooklyn Bridge Album was released in 2004. They toured around NY playing their new songs on a big open truck and then they ended up giving a mini concert below the Brooklyn Bridge later that day. It was to promote HTDAAB. I guess another reason is that in 89 Bono's voice was in much better shape than it was in 2004 due to his allergies and smoking. But he's almost stronger than before now in NLOTH and you really can tell
Just listen to Moment of Surrender. It's same note he sings in the Brooklyn Bridge version which is 1 semitone higher than this one. An A :) He hits it almost every line in Moment of Surrender.
Thanks for the info! I know that u2 play most songs a semitone lower than on the CD. same goes for Bon Jovi. I really like the 89 she´s a mystery with those soft but solid high notes.
the brooklyn bridge version is from 2005. He had a stronger voice '89. thus he hits those high notes with more power. The mid and late eighties was probably the highpoint in his singing carrier, as far as being able to hit those high notes
When you hear the Roy Orbison recorded version of this song , you then understand why Elvis stopped touring with Mr. Orbison. Elvis thought Roy was so much better than him that he felt ashamed of his voice. I love them both!
They may have wrote it but Roy Oribson's version is way better but then again they wrote it with him in mind which is class!

Wow, I shouldn't be surprised that U2 could cover Roy Orbison so well, but there it is - color me pleasantly surprised.

@strubinator actually bono and the edge wrote it for roy orbison!

Presence of this song would well improve Rattle and Hum as an album! The most annoying give-away of the song followed by Coldplay's Gravity

The 2005 voice of Bono for this song dind't work at all. The 1989's it's much better, but not even close to Roy Orbison
