If you want to look at the purest form of racing today, look at Australian V8 supercars. Anyone of 7-8 drivers can qualify first and win the race on a given day and the cars and tracks are designed to challenge both car and driver.

And why should I only look at the time? You don't like clean driving, perhaps it's a macho type of thing. I like it and I like watching it. When one knows what to look for, the difference becomes a pleasure to watch. Clean driving is masterful driving and mastery has its appeal. It does not speak to some (apparently you're one of them), I don't care. It's still mastery, as shown by the chrono.

For any vehicle, there is a set of limits, if you can be exactly at that limit, you'll be the fastest one can be with this vehicle. Over it, you waste time, under you are too slow. Being as close as possible to that limit without going over is what racing is about. Fine line, requiring utmost concentration. Vehicle does not matter one bit. Karting, Formula 1, rallye, same principles. Some are more complex, still the same tho.

@llliiijjjyyy There is only so much one can be spectacular if he wants to win. Freddie Spencer wasn't as fun as Randy Mamola but in his days he was untouchable. Spectacular is for those whose control starts breaking down close to the limit. They make up for it in boldness. It works only to an extent. They're not as consistent, tend to crash more, and although accidents can happen to all, it can lead them to an end like that of Senna's. Sorry dude, that's the reality of racing.

I can't believe people here are actually arguing that Block is better than Loeb. That is utterly insane. He is a 7 time (in a row) champion in WRC while Block can barely pull off a point.

But quite frankly I have doubts that he would have known such success if he was rallying among guys like Makinen, Sainz, Mc Rae, Burns etc... when they were at the peak of their career. He only "met" some of the majors when they were "close to retirement".
It's like Schumacher, he was great without "competition". At Prost or Senna "top time" he was invisible. Same here.
My opinion exactly. The 80's and 90's were full of seriously talented drivers and the competition was razor sharp. Back in the mid 90's there were guys like Sainz, McRae, Makinen, Kankkunen, Burns, Auriol. There were also at least 4 factory teams and 5-6 manafacturers. Now we only have Citroen and Ford (who hasn't produced a really good Rally car since the RWD Escort in the late 70's) and a field of also rans. For Loeb to dominate in such conditions means comparatively little.
Sainz was past his prime by the late 90's. Makinen won his last rally in 2002, and retired in 2003. Burns was already dying. McRae won nothing after 2002. Hirvonen is not in the class of Mikkola, Alen, Kankkunen or Makinen. Solberg is good but not great, Gronholm the only real competitor Loeb has faced.
Add to the fact that there's only two factory teams, one of them being Ford which hasn't produced a really good rally car since the days of the RWD Escort of the late 70's.

Markku Alen has more special stage wins from fewer starts than Loeb has. Add to the fact that Alen raced all types of cars, FWD, RWD, 4WD, rear engined Porsches, mid-engined Group B monsters, WRC cars, you name it. That in an era which had guys like Rohrl, Vatanen, Mikkola, Kankkunen (in his prime), Mouton and Blomqvist among others.
Means more than a guy who has had the best car and average team mates for several seasons and never driven for any othe rmanafacturer.
loeb hasn't really had an opportunity to race under those circumstances.
just because he didn't compete in the group B era doesn't mean he wouldn't have been competitive. loeb suffers from a perception that he has little competition when the reality is that he makes them look worse than what they are.
nobody wins 7 consecutive titles in a relatively short career because they had a lack of competition, he rightfully deserves to be mensioned in the same bracket as the drivers of old.

Then for a number of years it was between Peugeot and Lancia, just like Ford and Citroen today. For the 1.6l comment, irrelevant. Back in the 80's, turbo F1 were limited to 1.5l. You don't have to like Loeb, but don't dispute his talent.

I can't believe people here are actually arguing that Block is better than Loeb. That is utterly insane. He is a 7 time (in a row) champion in WRC while Block can barely pull off a point.
While Block might be a good driver, Loeb is in a completely different league. And honestly, I myself can do half of the stuff Block does in his gymkhana car. Many other that do any sort of racing (ex autocross) will tell you the same.

But quite frankly I have doubts that he would have known such success if he was rallying among guys like Makinen, Sainz, Mc Rae, Burns etc... when they were at the peak of their career. He only "met" some of the majors when they were "close to retirement".
It's like Schumacher, he was great without "competition". At Prost or Senna "top time" he was invisible. Same here.

My opinion exactly. The 80's and 90's were full of seriously talented drivers and the competition was razor sharp. Back in the mid 90's there were guys like Sainz, McRae, Makinen, Kankkunen, Burns, Auriol. There were also at least 4 factory teams and 5-6 manafacturers. Now we only have Citroen and Ford (who hasn't produced a really good Rally car since the RWD Escort in the late 70's) and a field of also rans. For Loeb to dominate in such conditions means comparatively little.

Sainz was past his prime by the late 90's. Makinen won his last rally in 2002, and retired in 2003. Burns was already dying. McRae won nothing after 2002. Hirvonen is not in the class of Mikkola, Alen, Kankkunen or Makinen. Solberg is good but not great, Gronholm the only real competitor Loeb has faced.
Add to the fact that there's only two factory teams, one of them being Ford which hasn't produced a really good rally car since the days of the RWD Escort of the late 70's.

Loeb is like Rocky Marciano was in boxing. He defeated an old Joe Louis (aged 37, whereas Marciano was 10 years younger and in his prime), and defended his title all the way to his retirement in 1956. For this reason some say Marciano was the greatest ever. Unfortunately it is well known that Marciano's era had very little real talent and those in hard training to become the next generation never faced him before he retired. Enter a whole new generation of talent. >>>

But the fact is Patton only ever faced an already defeated German army in 1944, which was a far cry from the monster machine they had in 1941 and 1942. You see bu the time Patton faced a few German boys, the bulk of the German forces were still tied up on the Eastern Front trying to hold the Red Army back. Also, whereas Patton had all the fuel and equipment in the world his German opponents had next no fuel for their tanks and often abandoned them when the fuel was gone.

Markku Alen has more special stage wins from fewer starts than Loeb has. Add to the fact that Alen raced all types of cars, FWD, RWD, 4WD, rear engined Porsches, mid-engined Group B monsters, WRC cars, you name it. That in an era which had guys like Rohrl, Vatanen, Mikkola, Kankkunen (in his prime), Mouton and Blomqvist among others.
Means more than a guy who has had the best car and average team mates for several seasons and never driven for any othe rmanafacturer.

loeb hasn't really had an opportunity to race under those circumstances.
just because he didn't compete in the group B era doesn't mean he wouldn't have been competitive. loeb suffers from a perception that he has little competition when the reality is that he makes them look worse than what they are.
nobody wins 7 consecutive titles in a relatively short career because they had a lack of competition, he rightfully deserves to be mensioned in the same bracket as the drivers of old.
