I find it takes alot of talent to make machines sound soulful, but some people manage it. Bjork always comes to mind.... try listening to the extremely difficult album "Medulla". Like the first Tom Waits albums i heard, it takes a while to get, but repeated listens come to be VERY rewarding.

This song just proves that Tom Waits is awesome, period. The only reason he wasn't a quote "commercial" success was that people couldnt get past his voice. Replace his voice with a beautiful songstress and everybody loves it. I do like it though. (PS: check out "Marv goes out west" video)

All of you that have been spitting on Tom, please beware of the fact that it's your personal taste. You might not capable of listening to his music, that doesn't mean the man ain't a great singer/songwriter. His voice holds all the emotions that are described in his songs. His lyrics require a broken voice, since his songs are often about broken hearts. For you to dishonour this man is sin. Obviously Allison's voice is easier to listen to. But that is your shortcoming, not Tom's!! Cover is nice.
