The fact that two such radically different performers (i.e., Waits & Krauss) can make excellent versions of the same song shows what a great song it is. I don't think you need to choose between them.
The genius of voice and arrangement make this collaboration one of the most artistic I have heard in a long, long while. Alison you are a beautiful soul.
But, what a truly stupid video. I love Allison Krauss and have tremendous respect for Tom Waits & Robert Plant
I wish record companies would respect their musicians, composers and music fans. I agree this lady is beautiful but so is Allison Krauss and she' is the one who is singing.
Not all of us need dopey MTV/Country videos to enjoy the music.
Some of us would rather see the performance!!!!

... just go listen to AK singing live on a stage in an intimate good ecoustics theatre... unaccompanied, now THAT is heaven without tricks or electricity ( or Mt Plant) she interprets so mant so wonderful songs...including this one..
I'm resisting the temptation to take a cheap shot at music and artists I don't know, all to praise Tom Waits. But I know it's true that high output humbuckers and computer-generated sounds don't move me like poetry, courage and a sense of fun. Some pianos have been digitally enhanced. His piano's been drinking.
This always happens . . . It looks like I'm comparing TW to AK and RP. My comment's a response to the one about NIN (which I like) and the heavy industrial genre. I don't mind getting flamed, but I can't stand being misunderstood.
I find it takes alot of talent to make machines sound soulful, but some people manage it. Bjork always comes to mind.... try listening to the extremely difficult album "Medulla". Like the first Tom Waits albums i heard, it takes a while to get, but repeated listens come to be VERY rewarding.
There is no more a talent than Alison Krauss. The voice of and angel. Amazing to see the successful colaboration with Rocker Robert Plant. Its moments like this that gives confidence that the musical world just keeps getting better
Nice instrumentation but the voice feels a little bit too "ethereal" for me. I guess I´m more used to Tom´s raspy voice, it has a "wisdom" quality that agrees perfectly with the song and the lyrics.
(smiecheltje's comments is what I meant to "Bravo!!")
This song just proves that Tom Waits is awesome, period. The only reason he wasn't a quote "commercial" success was that people couldnt get past his voice. Replace his voice with a beautiful songstress and everybody loves it. I do like it though. (PS: check out "Marv goes out west" video)
There is something so pure, gentle, and haunting in Alison's voice on this classic by Tom Waits. She could be compared to Kate Bush on her delivery of this classic.
As far as I'm concerned, Plant and Krauss are absolutely IT at the moment. Nobody else is making music or sounds that come close. Plant has been REBORN!!!
I just heard the live version of this from the first Raising Sand show. It is astounding! Can't tell you how amazing Alison's voice sounds singing this live. Incredibly powerful!
All of you that have been spitting on Tom, please beware of the fact that it's your personal taste. You might not capable of listening to his music, that doesn't mean the man ain't a great singer/songwriter. His voice holds all the emotions that are described in his songs. His lyrics require a broken voice, since his songs are often about broken hearts. For you to dishonour this man is sin. Obviously Allison's voice is easier to listen to. But that is your shortcoming, not Tom's!! Cover is nice.

You're kidding, right? Who hasn't heard this crap before? Any canary can sing... Tom Waits made something beautiful, and she's transformed it into something (Although pretty) entirely generic.
Saying that the song is good but to not praise tom for writing it, in fact calling him "overrated" is like saying that any one covering a bob dylan song is better. They might sound better but no song sounds better then from the person who wrote the song.
mystic and beautifully deep :)

anybody out there who can help me identify the instruments used on this song ?
I guess (!) I can hear:
- double bass,
- hammered dulcimer,
- xylophone,
- acoustic guitar,
- violin,
- djembe (? - what is it for a drum ?)
Thanks for your help !
