The Dutch knew that excessive persuit of profits was bad for the soul of the nation!? Wow. That really does sound like enlightenment. If they only knew the mess we'd get ourselves into.
@snaileri According to vangelismovements(dot)com/cosmosseries.htm Vangelis made music specially for the Cosmos special edition of 1986, most of which hasn't been released on albums. As this track is from the remake of the full series in year 2000, I guess that this can belong to that category ("Some of the new music also appears in the 2000 remastered VHS and DVD release").
(A short passage in Heaven and Hell at 05:53-06:05 reminds somewhat of your track.)
@01sircharles The message is the Gold record onboard. And the inscription on the back basically says "come to the 3rd planet in the system of Sol and you will find Humanity." Y'know the picture of the naked man an woman waving? There's a star chart next to them as well.
I am proud of my little country. It has fought off much bigger countries, such as France and Spain, and created a safe haven for intellectuals. While the rest of Europe was controled by some religious freaks, my country played a big role in the Enlightenment. Religion had its fun, kept us back for centuries and victimized lots of people. The Netherlands helped breaking the chains from this oppression. It's also a great honor to have received Carl Sagan here in my very own hometown (Amsterdam).
Sad that Sagan never got to see the results of Cassini-Huygens, but great that Cassini is still out there doing science for us all. Something noble about astronomy, planning missions that will not yield results for decades.
How ironic, in one of the other episodes (I forget which one) Carl talked about the folly of pseudoscience, and the ad in the corner is for "Live Psychic Readings"
@ASKaPHYSICIST my dad was a producer on this episode. Carl actually got very very sick during the making of this specific episode and was postponed for a long time. when this show aired, they had to have him complete the episode some 8 years later with newer facts and tid-bits they found. 7 and on were shot on time so they had to come back to 6 when they could. kinda cool/sad story. Started to see some of carl's health issues happening around this time as well.
at 37:10 SOMEONE shoulda told that poor man that he looks like a fucking retard with the necklace. You'd think being a scientist he would be smart enough to know he looked like a total idiot lol...poor guy.
@JustinCase10261 Poor you who, so far is the only one creature who has fixed you attention in something so banal... may one day you also encounter enlightment!
1 year back I downloaded Cosmos series from atheistmovies blog and I had no idea who he is. I saw his first episode of cosmos, and I couldn't stop searching for his videos and books.
Everything about Sagan amazes me <3.
Thanks TheScienceFoundation for these AWESOME videos. U ROCK!

What is the name of the music that plays at 08:40? Tell me if I'm wrong, but it has some similarities with a track from the Stargate series.

This has 10 000 views, and Rebecca Black's Friday has what, millions of views? Goddamn, that brings me down.

"The world is my country, science is my religion."
Finally, someone understands how I feel. And it was a Dutch man who lived hundreds of years ago.

It was only a few days/weeks ago that Voyager reached inter stellar space, marked by a change in direction of the passing particle wind.
Good timing for the vid.

I love the beginning music in this series, and I was pretty pumped when I recognized the "The Rite of Spring" in the Interstellar Collisions episode.
Love your presentation of these, I can't wait until one day I can afford to purchase this collection myself :), keep it up!
