  • Sounds like a deeper version of 765's whistle...

  • Great video

  • Other than N&W 611, that is the most beautiful whistle I've ever heard.

  • @zz750211 sounds like an AT&SF 6 chime to me

  • ottime le riprese in movimento

  • What a beautiful train.

  • The NJ Transit Choo-Choo Train.

  • Choo-Choo Soul!

  • wow....thats all i can say...

  • Beautiful!

  • Muito binito esse video

  • 614 is REAL steam engine. She'd kick Thomas' sissy blue ass any day of the week.

Awesome video! I rode behind 614 on a CSX Safety Express excursion in March, 1981. It was one of the best days of my life.

  • 614 is REAL steam engine. She'd kick Thomas' sissy blue ass any day of the week.

  • @MrCzechers speaking of brittish loco's, the 614 would probally kick the mallard's ass in a race, and even if it didn't the 614 could haul a hell of alot more cars than the a4 class could ever dream of hauling, to bad that the northern types couldn't save steam from the onset of diesel electrics

  • @packr72 Thats one more thing the British can't do. The 1st, of course, is win a war by themselves.

  • @MrCzechers well locomotives like the a4 mallard and a1 tornado are fine for the much smaller british railways, i mean let's face back in the day nobody moved more passengers faster than the many us railways, and of course even today no country moves as much freight as us railways do, well the brits can beat the argentians by themselves

  • @packr72 Thats only because Argentina does its military spending at the Army/Navy Surplus Store. lol

  • Holy crap!! how fast can she run, at scene (2:47) it looks like she a run 65mph

An i guess I'm not the only one that love these old steam locomotives

  • SHIT now talk about a head of steam.and listen at her per'en. at 1:30 don't she sound sweet

  • 4-8-4, nevermind.

  • 0:53 is when I put this comment up, and please excuse my language, but... "Holy shit that thing is haulin' ass." What kind of loco is it?

  • I'm suprised there is no diesel for backup! Shes got tons of power to pull that many cars...Great Vid!!!!!!!

  • Now available on DVD. See link above.

  • @typebangin Parabéns pelo vídeo, as tomadas de cenas acompanhando a locomotiva na estrada ficou sensacional, muito bom mesmo. E anda muito essa máquina, em certos momentos parece flutuar nos trilhos. Gostei!!!

  • Great vid, beautiful engine working hard, great lineside shots, yeah !!

  • Holy **** Never knew those trains could pull that much :O Nice vid!

  • Ok, this just may be my all time favorite YouTube vid.

  • This is just all types of hot!

  • Nice chase scene.

  • Great video....Ross and the gang new how to put on a show. She isn't even working hard.

  • to me the whistle sounds like #1225s whistle.

  • this whistle is hypnotic

  • Seemed like it went on forever lol

  • is a Niagara???

  • @ducker1942 Nope. 614 is a C&O J3a, which has the same wheel configuration, but is a completely different design. There are no NYC Niagaras left.

  • Best Video of 614!!

  • RFD has a show called trains & locomotives. Nice video! Peace

  • Is this the same 614 that powered the Chessie Safety Express in the early 1980s?

  • @bullfrog1954 Yes, it is the same locomotive

  • @typebangin incorrect, that engine is EX Reading 2101, a T1, not C&O 614, 2101 is at The Steam Town National Historic Site on display but is currently undergoing asbestos removal. Reading 2102 used to be used by the BM&R on occasions from Temple to Hamburg, she still might be up in Temple somewhere, to bad that program shutdown :(

  • @NJTCOMET No, 2101 was damaged in a roundhouse fire in Kenutcky in 1979 and never ran again. It was cosmetically restored as American Freedom Train #1 and traded for 614 which then ran in the early 80's on Chessie. 2101 is now at the B&O RR Museum in Baltimore MD. 2124 is the Reading T1 at Steamtown. 2102 is in Port Clinton PA and has not run since 1991 on the Reading and Northern. 2100, the last Reading T1, is in Washington state where it ran briefly after being badly converted to oil firing.

  • @typebangin well it turns out we are both wrong:

    2101 watch?v=c2BoMFZcnDI

    614 watch?v=lAQwPc4JmS4

They both ran Chessie Safety Expresses, 2101 ran its trip just before the roundhouse fire

  • i bet she can go faaassttteeerrrr

  • @marblehamburger I've heard she can top out at 110-120, but thats just an estimate. #844 can hit 80 mph and she doesn't look winded at all.

  • nice vid. just wondering how it is that u are able to chase this train down to most of its locations on the way to and from its trip? did you work with multiple cameramen and then edit the video together? thanks

  • @parim31 I filmed it all myself. This was roughly a 200-mile roundtrip, so you could usually catch the train 3-4 times in each direction (especially with stops).

  • pretty sick rhythm she started kicking out at 2:12

  • repent to Jesus christ. Jesus loves you all, come to the kingdom! the holy spirit says come!

  • @typebangin its in Roanoke Virginia now at the Roanoke Transportation Muselm sitting next to N&W 611

  • I just missed seeing this engine at the Muselm in Roanoke Va I was up there but missed the muselm due to weather I was told its sitting next to N&W 611

  • About how fast was she going?

  • This is the Hallelujah Chorus of steam videos! Inspiring, captivating, and goose-bumps.

  • @HalWileywise LOL I was just thinking the same thing well said

  • I was hanging out of the first open window car for 3/4 of the way to Port Jervis and about the same on the return on that run.I had so much fun ,Hat's off to Ross Rawland

  • Impressive video, Thanks for sharing this.

    Ross Rowland

  • It's like a big set of balls barreling down tracks!

  • Impressive - even by US steam standards.... to haul a 22 coaches 1,500 tons or so train like that but I've read that the "Greenbriers" were design to pull 25coach+ trains at 80mph!! Great pacing shots. Gotta love that whistle :-) TU

  • @HughFromAlice Yes what a machine and credit to the engineer who's not afraid to use its power, Im 59 and have this many times.Terrific stuff.

  • @typebangin It is being restored and should be running in the new year (2011) for some big passenger special called the Yellow Ribbon Express.

  • Great video. Thanks for sharing.

  • I'm normally not a fan of C&O engines, mainly because of the position of the headlamp (I don't know why, I'm just not a fan of it) but man she is a gorgeous engine

  • Your shots are so dramatic!! What a great video! That long stretch of NY 17 along the NJT/Metro-North (ex-Erie Lackawanna) Port Jervis line is a great spot, too. The clean smoke from the stack is how these engines were meant to run. Amazing how that one engine can pull so many modern coaches.

  • Your shots are so dramatic!! What a great video!

  • @kevindatrainmasta That is the whistle from the Chessie Safety Express operations. It was on both Reading 2101 and C&O 614! Thanks, typebangin!

    -Max

  • This is an AWESOME video. Thanks for sharing!

  • what whistle is that?

  • Is she a coal or oil burner?

  • Remember when we built things to last!

Gotta love the age of steam.

  • Very nice steamtrain . Plz watch my steam chasing movies.

The German steamers are not so nice as the American but anyway!!

  • I was on this train. I can't believe it is almost 13 years ago. Thanks for the video.

  • This video is amazing!

  • 614 thundering out of the Otisville Tunell...sweet footage...thanks!

  • Fantastic video! Outstanding job by both the cameraman AND the driver of the vehicle pacing the train... Well planned route and execution. And I'm blown away with the speed this steam train could reach too!

  • I was on that time and it was great ...cant wait till Ross runs it again.

  • fantastic job. Thank you very much

  • God that was awesome! Railroading at it's finest!

  • Good (no, *great*) footage, gang. Hope to (somehow) see it run again, in person.

  • GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! 614 IS GONA RETURN IN 2011!

  • @trainlover479 THANK GOD!!!! AT LEAST ONE PIECE OF C&O GLORY IS RETURNING TO THE RAILS!!

  • Awesome video shooting.

  • cant wait to see her run again

  • Sweet music, nicely done vid, thanks

  • Macchina infernale........... Che meraviglia!!!!!!

  • rode a lot of steam excursions in the 70's, 614 sounds familiar, but I think the only 4-8-4 was the T1 Reading.

  • Now that's how a whistle should sound. She's singing to me. Music to my ears and a great video too!

  • what i'd give to have to drive this for a living

  • The closeup at 4:00 made me drool a little. Fantastic vid!

  • tolles Video!!!!

  • Great video !!!!

  • its so cool seeing a classic like these come into towns man alive i love them stem era was my fav UP Challenger Big Boy all those!

  • man! that must have been the Frank Sinatra Special!

  • Love hearing those old steam whistles! It is quite a site to see one of these old iron horses in action. Back in 1980 I rode on an excursion train that ran on C&O's James River Division in VA from Richmond to Glasgow and back, pulled by a steam engine. I'm not sure that it wasn't the 614.I

  • @fordude60 yah thats cool I too share that same feeling I have rode steam locomotives in qute a few places worldwide my most recent was on Russian steam than in November German steam but I sure wish I could have rode 614 I never got that honer or N&W 611 unfortunatlly I finally got to see and ride 844 in July for the first time

  • Perfect job of pacing!

  • BEAUTIFUL!!! 5* and Faved!

  • a plus top notch work. my dad was 47 years with katy rr he cant wait to see this video.

  • Beautiful film work, first class.

  • 2:13, that is the best sound! not too fast but at the same time not too slow. AWESOME FOOTAGE.

  • That is a strong engine. The hill between Ramsey and Ridgewood was not joke even for diesel.

  • What a GREAT video, of really great trips, the best I've been on......really miss them....thanks for posting this....priceless

  • gotta love 'em northerns getting up to speed. The drivers with the white tires especially look good before they were removed (sigh)

  • Fantastic. Love how close it is @ 4:00.

  • verry nice

  • How did you eliminate the wind noise when you were following the 614?

The quality of this video is outstanding!

  • It's a shame that all this locomotive does now is sit outside the shop at Port Clinton at the R&N. Good chance it won't steam again.

    Great footage.

  • Magnificant footage !

    Braavo !!

  • Anyone know the status of this locomotive? Last thing I heard was that Ross Rowland sold it and it was put up for auction. Loved the video but its unfortunate that NJT trackage may never see a steam train again.

  • Tremendous footage!!! Your footage of the connecting rods and drive wheels from rt.17 in Sloatsburg, NY where the trackage goes upgrade and is within 20-25ft. is phenominal. Absolutely fantastic!!!

  • That whistle might be a AT&SF 6 chime. Compare it the MILW 261's whistle

  • I'm from DownUnda and we no longer have a single 4-8-4 in working order now. Simply love 'em big ones. And love the 614 - such a handsome looking ironlady. Top video. Love the close up during the pacing scene. I do understand 614 has been stored on a private property and there was some talk about having it back on rails? What is the progress so far?

  • really good pacing shots. Must have been a thrill to see

  • Very nice whistle and such a powerful locomotive.

  • That whistle might be Reading & Northern 425's Boston & Maine 6 Chime whistle, but I'm not sure. Correct me if I'm wrong, okay? Thanks for the great vid, chief!

    -Max

  • Wonderful video. Twenty-two cars and no diesel, that's exceptional in itself. And the car horn at the end! LOL.

  • Does this engine still run?

  • @SantaFe3751Fan It is being restored and should be running in the new year (2011) for some big passenger special called the Yellow Ribbon Express.

  • which side of the river was this? i live in NY and was arround at this time..........hmmmmmmmmm...............

  • This was on the west side of the Hudson River. 614 ran these trips for three years on the former Erie RR mainline, now New Jersey Transit / Metro North.

  • route 17 pacing is awsome. great video.

  • I've watched this video about a 1000 times since you put it on. Easily the best pace shots on youtube.

  • actually that isnt a reading 6 chime. thats an SP or ATSF 6 chime. the reading is much more high pitched. most of the trips the 614 has a rdg 6 chime though.

  • Now that's high-ballin'! Nice engine. I'm still a 2102 fan, but I've found a new second-place!

  • check out nkp 587 and 765

  • What really impressed me was how clean the stack was- which is either an indication of some pretty level track or a one heck of a skilled fireman!

  • Outstanding pacing shots, probably the best I've ever seen. Find my videos for the turntable shots.

  • that's the same whistle on 425 right

  • No. It is currently in storage at the Reading and Northern RR facilities in Port Clinton PA. I'm not exactly sure of what work needs to be done to make 614 operable again.

  • it is a Reading G 6 chime whistle

  • What whistle is are they using on this trip?

  • How did they turn the locomotive back towards Hoboken? They don't have a turntable, do they?

  • There is a turntable in Port Jervis. It's all that remains of the Erie RR complex that was once there.

If I remember correctly, it was restored (at least in part) because of these trips (and the promise of future ones).

The restored electric motors were not yet installed for the first trips in October of '96 and a bulldozer actually pulled the turntable to turn the engine.
