  • Interesting to see Dennis Price in this movie-another actor who hid his homosexuality, which caused him great unhappiness in his personal life.

  • Just heard of this movie. Going to give it a shot!

  • what a great film. really interesting to see shots of London from 50 years ago - places I recognise now.

  • @crockyoshighty

I really love Dirk as an actor and probably a person too, but sad he was such a fool in yielding to his arrogance in perversion in usual projection imagining "it's everyone else's problem," like alcoholics.

I love the "free" "gay" censorship preventing me from posting

  • See the sad, phony "homo hetero-sex-" oxymoronic fraud (homo = same+sex = opposite!?)

  • exposed as a vile but incredibly successful fascist propaganda trick that's brainwashed the whole world.

  • A friend of mine suggested today that I watch Daddy Nostalgie, a French movie with Dirk Bogarde, but I couldn't find that. I'd heard of Dirk Bogarde but would never have been able to identify him. When I read about him on wikipedia I noticed this movie and I liked the theme, so here we are, good old youtube. Kudos to the people who upload the not so run of the mill movies!

  • This film beats BOYS IN THE BAND (1970) The British are waaay ahead of good old uncle sam

  • The British movies always seemed ahead of their time and tackled subjects that we in America just seem to imply in movies. Hard to explain but any subject that was different or questioned, even unwed mothers and such were hit head on in British film making (L-Shaped Room, Taste of Honey)...just an observation. Always liked this movie but didn't understand it when I first saw it as a young girl. Thanks.

  • It's weird. In Brazil homosexuality is legal since 1831.

  • Dirk gives a fine performance, love that name Dirk. Film is now dated but younger people should view it like a history lesson.

  • Interesting tet43...A very well known tv personality was trying to make his way in theatre in the 50s, he was pushing an impresario for an increase in pay which drew the response 'you're married aren't you...consider yourself lucky that your sort has a job in theatre at all boy'

  • I never understood why people find homosexuality offensive either and then I lived in Los Angeles for five years where I changed my mind. I think it was the lesbian molesting me that made me see things differently. Or maybe it was the screeching about homosexuality everywhere I went. Or perhaps the company of people who want homosexuality to be the focal central point of my life. All my life, I had gay friends and a favourite brother who is gay. No more, never again. The abuse was too much.

  • @katatinkacaroon that says more about Los Angeles than anything else.

  • Dirk was cute! Are there any nude photos of Dirk?

  • @mrspatrickcampbell No, but I'm sure there's some of your Congressmen on the web. Check CL.

  • Very engaging film - thanks for making it available here!

  • i would like to know where the building site was, very interesting lol

  • @rabbithog I think it is near Westminster Roman Catholic cathedral because at 1:45 you can see a tower.

  • One of my favorites. A masterpiece

  • Wrong damn ratio.

  • I didn't make the original file, I just divided it into parts and uploaded it.

  • @marauderthesn Pay no attention to the whingers. You did a fine job. Despite my being a straight male, I am an admirer of Bogarde, for his acting, his writing, and his art. A fine performance by the man in a moving and poignant story, dealing with a situation that was extremely sensitive for the time and which did him no favours in the film business. I thank you for your effort in providing this. I'll be recommending it to friends.

  • I see your point, but the reason i included Mr. Bogarde in my thanks, is because at that time, 1961, for any actor, much less on of his star status, to play a sympathetic gay character was career suicide. He had everything to lose, and chose to do the right thing. Because of your age, i don't think you can understand the pressures and stigmas of being defined as gay at that time. There would have been no point to have "come out" ,and the only result, loss of employment and social support systems

  • Dirk Bogarde was a Man, a Mensch and a fine performer.

I agree with your thanking him for his courage.

    May I be a little " bitchy" ?

It is known that he had a considerable "big argument " !!

Being the English royalty and aristocracy the "way" they have always been..maybe he was protected by some Highly respected "crowned" male who had discussed with Bogarde?s BIG ARGUMENT at length !!

    Just a bitchy thought !

    Will Google it, though !!

    Thanks for posting, MARAUDERTHESN

  • But Bogarde's career didn't suffer as a result of his appearing in this film.

  • @dallaskenn I didn't say that it had.I said he had everything to lose, and chose to do the right thing, implyiing his choice "could possibly" have affected his career.

  • @tet43 I absolutely agree with you. Whilst it may not have harmed his career in hindsight, at the time of making the movie it was a huge risk to take. It's also worth mentioning that homosexuality was not decriminalized in England until the Sexual Offences Act of 1967 (just in case anyone thought that Mr Bogarde should have come out at the time). Dirk Bogarde was a brave and beautiful man, and one of my all time favourite actors!

  • I came out in 1975,at 17. It is unfathomable to me that a mere 14 years prior, these were the realities of gay men and women. We owe a deep gratitude to that generation of gay men and women who stood up to the injustice and risked everything to be able to live their lives with a little dignity, and change perceptions and help evolve the lives of gay people everywhere. My deepest gratitude, Mr. Bogarde, and those of a like mind during that time, for helping us get to where we are now!

  • I agree although there is real irony here: Dirk Bogarde who played the lead role in this film was himself gay but denied it until his death. Like many men of his generation, he couldn't bring himself to admit it publicly. Tragic.

  • I agree that it was difficult for one of his generation to admit it, at the same time he also simply cherished his private life and dignity, and for that too he is admirable.

  • A great movie- -more positive and life affirming than that terribly drab Gay Brit Movie from the 70s called Nighthawks.

  • £2300 back in 1960/61 was an absolute fortune!!!! If I were that lot, the blackmailer would be in some real serious bother. Though Im not Gay myself, I have never understood why people find it so offensive? Yes, I do know the reasons, historical etc. Those reasons died out a couple of hundred years ago. One has to be a real twisted SOB to try and ruin someones life over it.

  • test

  • Am I the only one who thinks Peter McEnerny's HOT!!? ;)

  • No. He is hot. See him in the Moonspinners, with Hayley Mills. Mmm...

  • thanks for putting this up!

  • great movie thanks
