As a child growing up in the 60s and 70s I loved the western genre of television shows, especially Gunsmoke. I looked forward to the program every week. It must have been exhausting for these actors putting out an hour program every week for as long as they did. The quality of the show was always excellent. I often wondered why Matt Dillon always wore a pink shirt.
Matt Dillon made the law but at least he honored the law. He hated violence because he wanted to build a town from the ground up(civilize it). I am wondering if they're really was a Matt Dillon who led Dodge out of the dark ages.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Arness. I did enjoy watching "Gunsmoke" with great-grandmother and my late great-grandfather when I was five or six years old. Thank you, sir!!
One of the last of the John Wayne era of actors has passed. It was Wayne that recommened his friend Arness for the role of Matt Dillion. Thanks for the memories and the great character of Matt Dillion.
In the early shows,he would draw in the opening. Then there was a crack down on violence and he would just stand there. Today,I think NCIS is the most violent show on TV. Guns, guns, every week.
Are you kidding? He lived a dream, 20 years in the top Western of all time, another decade of Gunsmoke movies! He's a legend! And television has been a great outlet for movie stars who are no longer big at the box office, take Charlie Sheen! These actors want to work and keep working, movies or TV it dont matter. As long as they keep working, acting, and making a living! And they also stay valid!
@STEVEMOR909 Sooner or later you have to give it up and move on.I recall the play,"Fanstaixs", Was that 7 days a week and 3 on Sunday? Get a life or stand on an assembly line and watch life pass you by.
@dithbmine1 Peter Graves (Mission Impossible), Jame's Arness's brother is the one that passed away several years ago. Arness is still alive and 87 years old.

@Kilooscarromeo Are you kidding? He was 79 years old when this was taped. He looks fine for that age. And mentally, he was extremely sharp.

IT was orignally called Gunlaw, but Gunsmoke sounded better, so they changed the name after the first few episodes.

I would hate to be a TV actor. Same old shit over and over and over. If I were an actor I would go for the big screen No TV period.
