The Emperor grows suspicious of Nameless when he described how easily he beat Sky. The Emperor knew Sky was pretty much an unbeatable martial arts expert.
@KiRiBaTi1990 the reason they put it at the beginning because they mention later on how sky considered himself without equal, so he lost intentionally to help nameless get closer to the emperor.
@DieAlptraume the ani-gravity and "flying" isnt so much as its them fighting in their mind so much as its a Wu Xia flick. Wu Xia (Martial Chivalry) is a fantasy world called Jiang Hu the characters inhabit and are able to "fly" or leap tall buildings in a single bound, its fiction. something alot of western audiances have been able to grasp and make fun of it. its about as real as a marvel or dc comic book movie.
@woodkey1 you should take a look at "The Odd Couple" made in 1979 with Sammo Hung and Lau Kar Wing. Contains some of the greatest scenes with the Qiang and Dao, at least in my opinion
You know it's funny. When I was younger and saw this when it first came out, I was intruiged by it and got it on dvd eventually cause I knew someday when I got a little older I would understand this movie more and see it's beauty. Now that I'm a little older and wiser several years later I rly appreciate and love this movie. The instrument from 0:55-0:59 is so beautiful, peaceful and powerful in a subtle way. Do we have a soundtrack for it? Anyway, I love this movie. Let it live on forever.
There is indeed official soundtrack for this masterpiece, you can find the songs here on YouTube. Search "At the Chess Court" I believe that's the name of the piece.
@XyoojXiong I don't think that is a Lyre... A lyre is more like a harp. This is a Koto or Gu Zeng. Koto and Gu Zeng are basically the same thing. If I am wrong, someone please tell me. :)
It's a shame that most martial art films today use the ridiculous line fighting where they are clearly held up by a string and fly thru the air like Peter Pan.
I believe it does the film a great disservice as most of the martial art is very good otherwise and the flying detracts from it.
The wire fighting in movies like this, and Crouching tiger, hidden dragon is supposed to represent the fantasy of the combat in the story. Real fights don't work like that. A man with a spear has a much better range to beat a man with a sword. The wire style in movies is for the how fantasy of combat. It's an art form and should be seen as such
I dont have a problem with some martial arts movies using a wire but i find it frustrating when ALL of them today are being made this way.
i own the crouching tiger hidden dragon dvd because it had a good story but if i want to watch a good martial arts film i usually look at John Lui or Bruce lee or Chuck norris. I believe its good to have both but all im saying is why do they all have to use a wire today?
Are there any wireless martial art films made anymore?
I love the beginning of the fight with the seven guys. Even after a fight, both opponents show respect. You don't see that very much nowadays in fights.
the emperors face when jet li tells him that broken sword understands him and says he must live is some of the best acting ever from the east. emperor and broken swords acting is superb, donnie and jets fighting is superb.
I only just watched the film again on youtube a few days ago here on youtube so forgive me for knowing this, I don't study films lol.
But I believe the only extended bit is from 2:16-2:32, where it shows Sky giving the old man some money or whatever they are, and then walking towards the steps in slow motion.
actually, the original directer is zhang yimou. when the film came to the u.s it was going to be cut considerabely. but tarentino offered to put his name on it to keep it from being cut so drastically. the company agreed and thats why most people think that tarentino originally directed it. but he actually had nothing to do with the filming at all.

actually, the color's represent the different levels of truth through out the story. red is the deception, the first story, blue being the perceived truth, in the emperor's eyes, once he figures out jet li's character is lying, and white, what the character's are wearing near the end, being the actual truth of what happened in the story. Green was for the emperor's flashback. The director states he likes using green as the color of memory.
these fight scenes are pure poetry, just amazing how they fight -seems like dance, like something beyond everything we know or understand. jet li a great actor!
Whoa... those seven agents realized they had no way of defeating Donnie Yen so they bowed with respect, stepped aside and allowed him to leave... this is so very very cool!
Assignment? what course are you taking? how come schools are taking this movie so seriously? I can answer you the second question. The real hero is the one who defeats or conquers his own self, by defeating the desire to take revenge, and choose peace instead. The true hero, is the person who conquers and controls himself. That is the inner war every one has to face.
I'm suspecting that you have already finished your assignment, but I would like to take a stab at your questions.

a lot of people seem to make fun of gravity in this scene... but if u understood what it means in the b&w fighting scene, it is not that strange...
the anti-gravity scene is depicted to be a mental duel between Nameless & Sky, not in the real world, thus it is okay i suppose.
