Yes, this version had a very small amount of excess thrust in hover and needed to dive 50 feet to pick up flying speed. Newer versions are more powerful and loose less altitude.
The idea is to eliminate the landing gear and need for runways, so it can only take off and land vertically. This will be available only as a fully autonomous UAV and will cost between $100K and $200K including ground station, stabilized gimbal sensor system, and support equipment.

Very cool. Transition to horizontal requires a dive unlike a helicopter with this power to weight apparently. Congrats to the team.
