i don't care about pretension, but i have seen this band live and given their albums several chances...i don't get it. and i like some weird shit. it's just not appealing to me. personally, i find it kind of annoying and devoid of feeling. not hatin', but wanna give my honest opinion, especially since all i hear from people is how amazing this band is and i just do not see anything special about them. but hey, to each his own.
To everyone calling it pretentious: what is the music "pretending to be"? In what way is the music ostentatious? There is nothing more ironic than people misusing the word pretentious because they simply bandy it about without knowing what it means.
i don't get how's their music pretentious??? i really hate that synthesied vocal or whatever was done to it, i hate it, it irrrrrritates me so much, i wish i could just shout it up - still i love the playing, it's soooo gooood. and vocals makes it almost some kind of a disco hit:/ (as for me) so - shut please up and just play!:)
Ive never thought of a band as pretentious or self indulgent. Im not even sure what thats supposed to mean when applied to music. If I like it, if there was some serious effort and thought put into the music, then Im fine with it.
John Stanier is awesome, but I'm not so sure about this. I'll have to listen more before I decide. I had the great experience of being in a band that opened for Helmet back in the 90's. He's awesome to watch and learn.
I hate it when pretentious new york kids try to make music soo different and soo unlike anyone else.. that it sucks.. but other pretentious ppl like it... because the pretentious ppl they're trying to be like, like it.. no one is orignal.. but everyone can be authemtic.
I think it sounds good... I'm not pretentious.... But I've read your comment and now I've come to the conclusion that I'm confused... So now I ask you, my friend abbaroc, what am I to listen to?
i dont know u.. but chances r your are pretentious and dont know it..genuinely like it.. but have bad taste... or are trying to fit in...but the group is lame.. you know yourself .. i can't really say..all i know is my friends that try waay too hard to be different and get social respect.. from our perrs "hipsters" "scenesters" enjoy it... as for me fuck any scene... they're all lame... if a group has the same mentality something is not right about it. like how all backpack heads love dilla..
nothing at all pretentious about that statement, huh?
Nothing hipster about name-dropping j dilla to diss scenesters. Go fuck yourself with the arcade fire or whatever shit music you like. perhaps if you spent more time listening and less time criticizing, cause anyone with half a brain can tell this is an amazing sound.
hahaha arcade fre?? lmao u r sooo lame... ima hip-hop head .. and fyi i brought up dilla because he is over rated but u can't tell an "underground" hip-hop head that because they'll never let u hear the end of it.. just like you are not letting me hear the end of this... and fyi if u call yourself a scenester than thats admitting ur a lame douche bag... go bump somebroken social scene and stare at a wall for 4 hours
Wow. I just came here to listen to a band i like...
I'm pretty sure that groups need to have similar mentality in order to function. For instance, bands, clubs, teams or any group of people with a common goal must already have a similar mentality in order to be in that group in the first place, and to allow it to progress.
If you can't align yourself with any group that shares a mentality, then you are useless to democracy, social groups and teams of any sort.
for those of you missing HELMET, John Stanier is in a great Australian band called The Mark Of Cain. They have a Helmet sound to them ( but were around before Helmet ) Their earlier stuff has a sort of Joy Division sound to the vocals with a Helmet feel to the music. "Battlesick" is a great album to start with. One of my favorite bands ever.
Mark of Cain have been around for years - Im happy new people are getting in to them. Helmet played this year in Adelaide and I heard they were shit - others loved it.
Yea, I've been into TMOC since about 1996. I e-mail with Kim and John alot. Kim is supposed to be comming to the US for business. Me and a friend of mine will probably get together with him. real cool guys. I'm always trying to get people into TMOC.
i said jazz rock not jazz and of course battles have the word jazz all over them, regardless of solos or improvisation, it's abot timing and structure, and sense of melody
whoa, this is definitely NOT jazz, or jazz rock for that matter. I'll give them the timing, structure, and sense of melody, but there is a massive gap between this genre and jazz. Umphrey's Mcgee, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and maybe Phish are jazz rock. I love this band, but seriously, get your genres down.
funny the people..that KEEP WRITING on this page like.-, need to stop thinking that this is the start of their point of the inheritance of the deuyn misters. and that goes for all you non CAN (the band) undiscoveroure's WAKE UP! Love''''''
I wonder if it's to just remove temptation , like maybe he doesn't like to hit that cymbal alot but he does anyway just because he's a drummer , and he wants to make it easier not to?
Even when John Stainer was in Helmet, he hardly used the cymbals. He accompanies alot of jazz rhytms in his drums. Even when he was in Helmet those drum tracks made the music stand out more. Plus most jazz drummers hardly use their cymbals.
HUH??!! That..is not really True!! I'm thinkin' maybe you haven't heard many jazz drummers-'cause I'd say MOST,if not all,DO use their cymbals quite a bit.The Cymbal is
the main time-keeping element in most modern
jazz..the other drums tend to "comment"
or play off of what the cymbals & hi-hat are doing.
I think if someone was actually able to categorize this band, the whole universe would blip out of existences and be replaced with something even more weird and awe-striking.
