I watched this movie when it first come out... I always wanted to go backpacking, but life does not always allow you........however 11 years on and i have just booked my tickets to go!!!!!! I made that mistake and we went our seperate ways within weeks it doesent work. You meet ppl as you go along and its all incredibly friendly. Backpackers should be a defined race. Incredible community of friendship and a real feel of ethnicity to it all. I will never forget listening to this as the sun set in Kho Phangan. Best days of my life

It exists, it's on the phi phi islands near Phuket in Thailand..

I went there..

And to be honest, it wasn't what I expected.. In the movie it seems that the beach and the water are closed in by high ridges, but this was computer animated. In real life it has an opening to the sea, (as you can see in the movie above).

And there were way too many touristic boats in the bay at that time, with garbage floating in the water and too many fat white people walking on the beach as well..
