this is when music meant something.damn where in the hell did all the classic VOICES go? there's a few artist today who are cool, but 80% of them are just horrible when it comes to singing.there is no way on this planet you cannot love this type of music. alot of the youngsters today don't take the time out to listen to true r&b like this. their so caught up into the shitty ass rap & fake r&b that has no substance, passion, creativity, meaning ect.. when will music like this ever come back?
This was my jam!!! And I thank Melba Moore because she was responsible for Lillo, Kashif and Freddy Jackson putting out their albums and she didn't get her recognition as a producer.
Remember this on the video jukebox in a pub i used to visit in my town (just outside London) in 1987 - it was always a popular choice with the drinkers in there.
I've loved this song since 1987 when it was released. But I didn't know until now that Lillo Thomas sang it, not Kashif. Wow. Thanks for posting this cut...
Thank-you to The Quiet Storm, KBLX 102.9 , In Oakland Ca, for intro'ing me to this guy & all of his great music. The 80's were just a great time for music from Talents like Paul Lawrence & Lillo Thomas. GBY to you both--the memories are Forever. Wolfsky9
@ introd27: that's where I first met him...my wife at the time and I went to a party @ Bentley's and he was there. I had a brief moment to chat with him. A short time after I met him that night, was when he got in the awful car accident in Brazil......
i used to bump this tune on my tricycle way back in the day. riding down my block with my boom box blastin gettin all the girls blushin in there faces. this one girl would allways hook me up with dranks from her milk box. mann...those were the days. she was my shugar pie honey. one kid was so jealouse he went to his pops tool shed and mucked up my bike. I was cryin when my tricycle broke...ah...but it did get me some kisses on the cheek. real men cry...I was just a kid and I played...
You did it again EinahChild!!!! I have this album and it's off the chain. There is this one cut that got very little airplay because they were playing this and a few others. The name of it is "Her Love" Please oh please post it up, trust me it will loved by everyone.
where? I didn't even know he was still around. I have his album from back in the day, the 90's. Not too many people have heard of him. Wasn't a very big hit here in SAn Antonio. But I still love his music. I recorded his album to a cd. Thanks for the post.
ok here we go, folks this is when lilo was more polished than the other albulms but this was a great jam i remember video vibes which revoluznized dance oriented video segments at the time and bet should have never took it off the air, now all you see is dumb sit coms 24/7 on there says uzipolo king of decatur
I can never get enough of this song. I imagined the video being Lillo in the jungle and some trible playing the drums and doing the DUM DUM DUM DUM sound haha. and the babe is the one that needs to be rescued.
I remember watching Video Music Box from like '84 to '88...it used to come on at 8pm, if I am not mistaken...it was the pretty much the only place you'd see these type of videos. "Good evening and welcome to Video Music Box...this is your DJ...Ralph McDaniels" I will remember that voice forever! The 80s in NYC area was a glorious time for music, I do believe. So glad I lived through it.
I have ANCIENT cassette tapes with this song (recorded from the radio) on them. Never actually got to see him in a video or anything. He F__KIN' PRETTY! he sing nice too.
He held the WORLD record at age 16. HAd it not been for the American boycott of the 80 games, Lillo would have been an Olympian...maybe a Gold medalist.
I ran HS track in Brooklyn in the early-1980s, and I still haven't figured out if this is the same Lillo Thomas who once held the NYS HS junior record for 220 yards at 21.1 in the late-1970s. This happens to be his biggest hit, reaching #2 on the R&B charts.
I've always loved how the melody (the brass section specifically) steps up at the end of each verse. I don't think I've heard that technique anywhere since.
How in the hell does a discussion of race, Jesse Jackson, and Obama make it's way on a comment section for a Lilo Thomas vid? DAMN!!!!! Just enjoy the fuckin' video!!!!!
You're welcome lifesaver72. We just went through 2 years of political crap. When I watch Lilo Thomas vids, I want to think back not read about an Obama victory, Jesse Jackson's mental stability, or whatever else was said.
Just keep shaking your fat ugly racist behind to Lilo Thomas. Barack will be an excellent president, and maybe you need to ask Jesse Jackson to help you with your mental problem.
You don't know whether I'm fat or not, hijo de puta.
Jesse Jackson has the mental problem because he had no faith in Obama when Obama was campaigning until he became President-Elect. So how would I have somebody biased like that giving me help??
If this were face-to-face, I'd probably fly over and give your shit an eye jammie.
I don't know WHAT EITHER of you two are talking about, as BOTH Jesse Jackson AND Barack Obama make me PROUD to be black, just as much as this classic song by Lillo makes me PROUD to turn my back on the mess on the radio today. I suggest you two take your words to another video post, and let the REST of us enjoy this great song and video!
Yes, I'am also proud of Barack Obama, so keep dancing and save your speech for your children/grandchildren. And please, keep the music down and don't disturb your neighbors. airjor1, Sacramento, Ca.

Holy Smokes! I had his albums! This song brings back MAAAAAAD memories of when I was in the 5th grade. I shook my rump at the teen dance to this song! LMAOooO
This was the cut, you all! It made it to #1 on the Black/Urban charts in 1987 and #2 on the Billboard R&B charts. These are one of many songs that made my summer in 1987!
The music back then had class & soul - nothing to compare these days - yes im an 39 yr old dj who is stuck in the 80's soul , rap , dance era - ONLY PLACE TO BE - big love to all soul casualties & thank you so much for posting !!!
Good to know fella , ine got my decks set up at home now ( after my wife let me !! ) - no - she loves the choooons too ! . But i find myself going on decks for a few mins .... than five hours go by - love it !!!!!!!
lillo was the king in new york when this came on the streets froze foreal nothing like riding in a droptop thru harlem playing this damn those was the good ole days (sigh)
i guess this is what we are reduce to right!! just thinking of the old days!! man!! ant this youtube crazy!! man!! i love it and i love to read you guys comments!!
Awesome! This was my jam back in the 80's, but I always thought the name of this song was called, "I Surrender"! No wonder I could never find this in the record stores, LOL! Thanks for posting!
I'm a dummy. I thought Kashif sang this song well now I know. Oh yeah and you know it..... this was the "Soul Train" banger. They used to get stupid to this on that line - pop, lock and drop it.... 80's style with the echo percussion. I think some people still collectin disability from tryin to do the snake or wop to this.
Don't feel bad..I totally forgot who sang this song until I downloaded it on limewire. Then I said OHHHHHH..how could I forget about Lillo Thomas. This song is a bonafide classic.
Theres a lot of similarity because Kashif collaborated on some of his stuff back then. You will hear a little of Kashif, Freddie Jackson, Lillo, Paul Laurence Jones III flavor because they were all in the same "stable" of producers and songWRITERS back then. Kashif actually produced his first album I believe.
thats right from the production team THe MIGHTY M Productions which was them they were the shit in the 80's produced for evlyn melba keith washington among others says uzi polo-king of decatur

This was the cut, you all! It made it to #1 on the Black/Urban charts in 1987 and #2 on the Billboard R&B charts. These are one of many songs that made my summer in 1987!

I'm a dummy. I thought Kashif sang this song well now I know. Oh yeah and you know it..... this was the "Soul Train" banger. They used to get stupid to this on that line - pop, lock and drop it.... 80's style with the echo percussion. I think some people still collectin disability from tryin to do the snake or wop to this.
zebbie2000 4 years ago
Don't feel bad..I totally forgot who sang this song until I downloaded it on limewire. Then I said OHHHHHH..how could I forget about Lillo Thomas. This song is a bonafide classic.
pimpdaddyhustla 4 years ago
Theres a lot of similarity because Kashif collaborated on some of his stuff back then. You will hear a little of Kashif, Freddie Jackson, Lillo, Paul Laurence Jones III flavor because they were all in the same "stable" of producers and songWRITERS back then. Kashif actually produced his first album I believe.
