jay - i just started playing bass in June. Yes, learn your scales, yes master your chords and arpeggios...but when it comes to playing music please check out the "richardjpugh" channel on youtube. The lady is a piano teacher but my playing jumped after watching her videos about the circle of fifth and fourths and her discussion on chord progression. You won't be sorry.  Practice with a purpose and patience and daily. -Peace
