  • cool! tell sandy i play his LP's in seattle clubs all the time.

  • awesome video....so great to hear sandy nelson talk about some of his career moments

  • DL the audio from this clip at speedyconversion doht cohm.

  • Hi Daniel, I believe you're wrong on Sandy playing on Hawaii Five-O. I have the book, Walk-Don't Run: The Story Of The Ventures, & it clearly states that it was Mel Taylor, The Ventures long-time drummer, who played the track. He was the one who brought it to The Ventures because he was working on the Hawaii Five-O soundtrack. Now it is true that Sandy played with them on their albums, and even toured with them in 1962, but I have not found a shred of evidence to say he played on that song.

  • @prodigyofpeace1983 you are correct, i simply meant that the ventures was known for that song. ill clarify that

  • Nice to have been playing at that time when the field wasn't so crowded.

  • Thanks for posting. How seldom one gets to hear one of the great drummers and musical inspirations -- speak about their own experience.

  • Thanks for posting this video! Teen Beat was one of my favorite songs on the radio when I was growing up.

  • the master*****

  • I always liked Sandy's drumming. I had most of his albums in the 60's.

Having said that I hope I'm not stepping on anyones cake here but Sandy never played for the Ventures.

  • Another great clip here. I love these stories. Keep them coming!

  • Big Big fan. love this vid.

  • sandy is the reason i became a drummer. i'm still gigging after 42 years. when i was six i thought, this guy must have four arms!

  • sandy - you a god of drums ! thanx for great stuffs of music !!! mickey from (west)-germany

  • Thanks for posting these videos! Love his comments on Richie Podolor. Perhaps more between the lines there. The more I re-listen to his music the more I realize I've been copying Sandy all this time...he rules!

  • I love this fella. He is one of the true legends of rock music. Daniel (Trujillo) I`d be so grateful if you`d convey my best wishes to this great man.

I`m from England but now live in Ireland. I play guitar and have been in bands so I really apprecuate Sandy Nelson. Thanks to him for so much musical pleasure.

  • I thought he was dead. He, Earl Palmer & Hal Blaine made a lot of noise at Gold Star in the 60's

  • Oh my god!! How lucky are you to live near a drumming legend!! Thanks for posting this. I am such a huge fan, and he is the reason I started playing.

  • LTBD heard that when I was a kid

Sandy is wonderful and Im so happy to see he is still Playing

I started playing when I was 13 and I am still at it 44 years later

    Go Sandy

  • Daniel, Thanks a million for posting these clips. I have all of Sanday Nelson's albums from the early sixties and listen to them as often as I can. He is a very interesting person and I still at 65 years young enjoy him very much.Dan....Thanks again Jimbo

  • What a treat. I learned to play from his records. I could listen to a Sandy Nelson play drums anytime. Turns out, I feel the same way about him talking about drums.

  • You are nearly a neighbour of Sandy? I'm envious.

So, he got his inspiration to play drums at age 7? I heard Sandy and "Let There Be Drums" for the first time around age 7 and wanted to play drums ever since.

As life goes, it took until now (at age 44) to have the money and leisure to go out and get a kit. I wish I could find the beat sheet for LTBD.

  • how can i contact him for an autograph? hes my fathers favorite drummer. somebody please help me! whistlingdeathcorsairs at yahoo . com

  • Great to see him still sounds great

  • This great dummer influenced Tony Meehan and many more. Listen to "See You in My Drums" by the Shads best drummer.

  • I graduated high school in '64 and lived for rock drumming. This video really is a treasure!

    Thanks for everything...everything Sandy!

    Riverbender

  • Holy shit. You live next to Sandy Nelson...Cooool! :D

  • Thank you for posting this... this guy is a God of drums one of my inspirations!

  • Awesome! Somebody found Sandy Nelson!

One of my favourite artists in any style ever. I really hope he's still gigging.

  • Like some that have already posted, Let There Be Drums was one of the first records I ever bought. A bit before my time as they say, I bought it at a garage sale of all places, and it was probably the reason I took up the drums shortly therafter. When I recently read that Sandy was also one of Terry Bozzio's main influences I knew that I was in very presitgous company in my respect and admiration for this great master of the art of drumming. Thank you Sandy.

  • Sandy I studied with Gene and also wore out your albums and have always enjoyed your drumming. Thanks for making this video. Randy

  • My first record Was Let there be Drum, Sandy you re my mentor I' m fifty and play drums since 1975 because of you, I' m your biggest fan, Regards from Argentina- Eddie Moon-

  • Great to see Sandy giving some of his story.

My Dad and older brother got me into him.

we have gone through 5 LPs in the 60s and when Tet There be drums came out ion CD with the Long version of Birth Of The beat i got 4 copies. i had to drive 130 Miles to get them at a small record shop in South florida. I gave 1 to my dad. One to my Brother and 2 to myself.. Hope to see more to come.

Thank you Sandy, for the great entertainment.

  • Now you know where Elvin jones and Mitch Michell got their inspiriation.

  • Sandy Nelson is one of my all-time favorite drummers!! It is SO great to see him on video!! It's a shame that there isn't any vintage footage of him during the 1960's!!

Long live Sandy Nelson!! Thanks Danny Trujillo!!!!!

  • hey sandy nelson fans, great to see/hear from him. i did not know that anything would come up. glad i did now. i think that sandy had his foot or part of his leg taken off

from an accident. could someone let me know if that is true or not. have some albums of him from my childhood.

was good to see him. a fan

  • Yes, it is true. He had to have one of his feet amputated as a result of a motorcycle accident.

  • thanks "newtobayarea" for your reply. i wasn't sure but i did

hear this from many years ago. i play drums & i always tried

to "copy" his technic until i heard MEL TAYLOR of THE VENTURES. they are the #1 instrumental group in my book. they

are still touring & sound great. i was saddened to learn of

his death about 10 yrs. ago but was pleased that his son LEON

stepped right in & the group didn't "miss a beat". thanks

again for your reply. wayne seay

  • Sandy can make those drums TALK.

  • yes he can..they say..please put the stix down.

  • Also Be sure to check out information for "LET THERE BE DRUMS - THE SANDY NELSON STORY" documentary at...myspace comthesandynelsonstory for all you true Sandy Nelson fans.

  • Way to go Sandy.A master at work. What a treat this

    video is. Silver873

  • Thanks for putting this up! Rock history doesn't usually give him the time his influence deserves. The surf/instrumental explosion of the early 60's drew a lot from his first records. Sandy is a friend & I'm sure he'd love to hear that folks enjoy (past & present) the music. He's a great guy & always has awesome stories about the Hollywood music scene back then. Can't wait for part 2!

  • sandy is a living legend. good on ya mate!

  • por favor quiero ver esto con subtitulado en español

  • Mik and Jake say:"What a legend, Sandy Nelson." Viva la Mission

  • this is worthy of a full documentary on prim time tv or radio

  • Thanks for posting this! I've always loved Sandy's music and it's great to hear from him after all these years. Some of my favorites are Teen Beat, Teen Beat '65, and Drums are my Beat. Tell Sandy his music is still being played and enjoyed and wish him the best.

  • Great to see Sandy Nelson. Love the stories. Are there any videos from back in the early 60's? Hope so. Roger Taylor of Queen is using "Let there be drums" as his drum solo song. Check it out. Keep rockin' Sandy.
