I found the series entertaining to watch but the whole concept is fundamentally flawed. Map knowledge is huge, and something that a new player won't have. Also, playing with experienced squad mates is unrealistic because most new players are likely to have random squad mates.

As somebody who has only been playing BC2 for less than a week, I could tell from the series that you were desperate to unlock magnum ammo, and you equipped it instantly. The opposite of what you were trying to prove, no?

@alphadev Thanks for watching! I think a lot of people got the wrong idea from this series. I did not intend this to be a way to prove that magnum ammo is unnecessary, or that any new player picking up the game should have similar performance. Map knowledge and prior experience always gives an advantage. I just wanted to showcase my journey in re-playing the early levels to see how I would fare compared to my normal performance, and to see how being limited on specs/weapons would affect me

The difference between you starting the game at the beginning and a newcomer is that you know the maps which is more important than anything. For a newcomer it is really difficult because of that and without magnum ammo you are definitely at a disadvantage in gun fights. That is still not a good enough reason to not buy this game even now because it is probably the best online shooter in recent years. Some people have no balls to stick it through to reap the rewards.

Nice series made it my movie night. I had just started playing battlefield to see how the franchise is before I decide if I will buy BF3. And I found that you level up fast enough and get most of the specs within 24-48h of game play. Since the game feels fresh during that time you tend not to notice the difference mostly cause you don't have anything to compare to.

Great series. Really enjoyed it. As level 10 on BFBC2 PC, it has taken a while to gain the map knowledge and be comfortable with the controls.  Playing the game initially was very frustrating especially when up against levels 30-50's. Clearly a knowledgeable player with good reflexes does well. As the saying goes (and your series shows) " A good carpenter does not blame his tools."

The difference between you and a noob is that you're not a noob. First of all you're a killer fps player and you have played bfbc2 a lot. So it's not really fair to all the beginners. =) But it's always nice to see the strategy of a good player. You can learn a lot. One of the things good players always do is to move around. Be unpredictable. Noobs always camp.

Loved the series, Jay. I spent a month away from my xbox and when I came back I sucked... so I started a new account with a free 1 month trial because I figured starting from the beginning and levelling up again would get me back to where I was. I agree with your conclusion. Specs help but it is totally possible to do really well without them. I am level 14 on my noob account and I honestly barely notice the lack of magnum ammo anymore.

it is different in your case, since you already have experience with the maps and tactics for bfbc2. a total newbie would have to spend 10-20 levels learning the intricacies of the game while having a 0.5 k/d ratio or even lower.

@smlwong true. i didn't even have to good sense to play conquest in the beginning. playing sdm only and trying to level up was misery. i realized at about lvl 9 that i should play conquest and get cap points, which are worth 3 kills. that helped tremendously. that would be my advice to any noob, play conquest and focus on squad/team actions and capping flags to get points.

when you made this series, it gave me the idea to make a new soldier too. In the end what i missed most wasn't magnum ammo but the G3 and the AT4, not having the last make you so useless against helis that it's stupid imho.

Why is it mgn ammo is so good? From what i understand it gives more damage at close range, cuts down bulletdrop and that is kinda it right? Not because i´m a noob, just thought about it.

@chri420i Magnum ammo gives a 25% damage increase at all ranges, for 90% of the guns in the game that equates to requiring at least 1 less bullet to kill at any range. It seems small, but it can make a big difference in gunfights

Those stats would be much lower if it weren't for playing with teammates for the last half of the series (teamwork is overpowered!)

I watched the entire series and loved every minute of it. interesting gameplay and commentary made even more watchable because you encountered the same highs and lows in BC2 I did and over coming them without like, rage quitting like hell. Jumping into this coming from MW2 was a massive shock and within an hour of playing, everything i hated about mw2 was forgiven, now its very much Battleifled all the way. Great work.

I loved this series. The only thing that you seem to be missing is the fact that many low level players don't have very much map knowledge at all unless they watch some videos on youtube. Even then they won't have much map knowledge and i think that is what really makes it hard to level up as a noob. Not only do other players have better guns, they also know how to use them and they know how to navigate the map in order to be efficient.

I'm just switching from PS3 to PC and having trouble with a couple things. One is switching to secondary: I use the scroll wheel, but it's not always consistent. Which do you use? The other is framerate. Do you know whether any drivers that came out after the game's release helped with performance?

I think magnum ammo is the smallest problem for a newbie comparing to not knowing map routes and not being familiar with weapons and controls. Someone who played a game for almost a year can't be an accurate representation of a noob, so what this series proved was that an experienced player could still do well without magnum ammo, which isn't a real surprise I think.

I was a great series nonetheless, I enjoy your BC2 commentaries a lot.

@serg472 I think you missed the point of this series. Of course rolling a new soldier doesn't magically make me inexperienced again, the "n00b" portion of the title just refers to being a low level. The whole point to this was to showcase the journey and the experience, and to show what kind of an effect playing without specs had on me as an individual
