Anyone that wanna to start with 250 4stroke. Better take a 2 stroke 125cc. Easy to ride, more light than those underpower or bulky 250cc.. Cheaper price as well. Or else don't get the 250cc just jump to 600 or 650cc budget tourer like Kawa ER6N or the Yamaha XJ6. They more price wise and wont get bored so fast.
Just to say, I have recently passed my test and bough an Aprilia Shiver, and I can't tell you how nice it is to ride. I'm 6ft1inch and am around 14.2 stone (Around 200 pounds). I get on great with her! Power is just incredible and at low speeds she is as calm as a V-Twin can get!
Having trouble finding luggage to go on it though! I would recommend this as a first/beginners bike!
@123Gya123Gya Here there is no license leveling, so a newb can go out and buy a zx14 if he has the coin and is mad enough to do it. Secondly displacement doesn't matter as much as power and power/weight ratio. A newbie would be better off on a Triumph Bonneville (865cc) than an Aprilia rs125. Manliness aside, having ridden a ninja 250, I'll say that 250s are no fun on the highway they're too light to be stable when you hit a bump and every time an 18 wheeler goes by you feel like a rag doll.

Indeed, nobody is stopping you from having a silly and uninformed belief. @elamd Lol, well I have to agree with you there. Lots of newbs run straight out and buy gzcxbr 600s or whatever. What I ought to have said is that most newbs that aren't squids or posers, go for 250s precisely because they're not powerful, they're light, they're flickable, cheap, and anyone taller than Frodo Baggins can flat foot them. Look I'm not bashing 250s, I'm just saying that they're not good highway bikes. Sure you can ride them there, it's just not their ideal environment.
@elamd Id recommend everyone start on a 250. they should learn how to shift/ use the clutch lever on a dirt bike even before that.... people think its an easy thing to do untill they freeze up. its not smart getting on a bike you can power wheelie on for your first time. My first bike was a ninja 250 and I wouldnt change that if I could. people bash them alot but it was faster than my car was at the time haha fun bike
aprilia is the racing motorcycle she is on the first place with a bit poor ducati. But all italians have racing hart. Aprilia alfa romeo ferarri ducati
@ikkeennigij121 I just checked one out at a dealer. I am 6 foot and it is an appropriate size. The seat was actually a bit higher than the others I checked out, like the FZ8, which is in the same class. It was a little bit of a reach to the ground, but not bad at all. The FZ8 seemed a bit more comfortable though, but it looks cheap as hell compared to the Shiver, which I think makes the Shiver worth the extra money.
@ikkeennigij121 best advice i can give you as a shiver owner is go and put your feet on the pegs! im 6"2' and my shiver is perfect. but that's not to say the bike will fit you the same way. plus what could be more fun then looking at brand new motorcycles!!
I've ha a 2009 Shiver for 1 1/2 yrs. At first it was a love hate thing. the bike appears feels top heavy. It's an illusion, the bike handles like a dream. It is on the heavy side but seems to handle the weight well. The engine takes some getting use too. Pulls up in 1,2, and 3rd gear with the clutch. I love the clutch on this thing. The power band is 7g-10g. 8g-10g happens rather fast after a little more than 10g it flat lines real fast. This a good bike. Use the power band and the clutch.
Compare Ducati with Aprilia that often you want...Ducati Monster 696 is already a legend. The Aprilia Shiver has no emotion, perhaps his engine is bigger but skill goes before power. I would take the Ducati Monster, you have better tuning options then the Aprilia ;-)
"Get into motocycling" what the f**k does that mean - I agree with borge225 - what is this dope talking about? - I'm younger but same generation. don't confuse sport motocycling with road use.... a recipy to get yourself killed. This guy is talking shyte!
@kaisunks Where in hell do you get them for that price? And most inportant than that how old are the ladies and in what average condition and milage??
mmm ducati...dont care about aprillia im a ducati fan all the way so sexy and great handling great all around.maybe its a good starter bike for someone who has a lot of money and half a brain, but i would definitely not recomend for your first bike. start low and cheap like already said by another commenter, and then work up. maybe a good starter bike for track racing? by the time u get into that you should have a feel of what your doing on a bike so then i could see it being a good starter bike
alright so im looking for my first bike, and ive been really interested in the ducati monsters. ive been looking in the 2001 area for em. just wondering if the 600cc-700cc (cant remember exact displacement) would be a good first bike? i dont wanna kill myself. i mean i have expierience on bikes, ive raced mx since i was 7. but have never really done anything with any kind of street bike. so i want so power, but at the same time i dont wanna kill myself. any advice/help??
Start up with a 250cc mate! I promise you, as a beginner you'll be able to control these ones in the video as well as you'll be able to tame a wild tiger. Get used to road riding, then switch up later. Who knows, perhaps amazing new bikes will appear from nowhere that you'll be then able to choose between hehe. Ride safe but ride hard bro
@moto4runner haha yeah i went and test rode the 900cc model and it was way to much bike for me. i mean i honestly dont think i could buy one of those kawi 250s. i mean shit i race 450's on the dirt so i feel like id be taking a step down and its not money i want to spend for a bike i dont want. ive also been looking at a buell xb9s, horsepower and torque arent ridiculous on that at all, what are your thoughts on that bike?
My Aprilia Shiver 750 alias Bella ;) is probably THE best bike I've ever ridden... As they said -increasing the speed its like a tank on the road while it is so incredibly stable and agile - you just cannor believe if u havent ridden it jet !
Besides: Note the BREMBO brakes, upside-down fork ans all these little accents coming from a true racing-motorbike-brand !!
@Iamvalcristvalentine I love ducs, but unless you're a new rider (the monster is more novice-friendly) who wouldn't spring for the shiver? It's got more oomph and has a lot of cool technology crammed in it. I recently sold my smaller bike to get an 1198 for track days and I wish I hadn't since, while an awesome motorcycle, it blows for commuting and in-town use. Thinking about getting a shiver as a more day-to-day bike, knowing the upsides of the bike have you had any downs with it?
@JACKtheRIPP3R189: for a commuting bike (which is what i am using it for) its hard to beat the shiver 750.
The only constructive criticism I could make is the stock saddle is rock hard and wide.(that took some getting used to) and the heads up display has no fuel gauge, although it has a "put gas in your bike now light" with a reserve tank. I think being able to see exactly how much gas you have would be an improvement. Other then that, no complaints at all.
@jflair16 well either you're rich or you need finance counseling, cuz where i'm from- nobody starts with a ducati when you're first learning to corner or downshift. if you are budgeted like me, then you wanna learn to push hard on something cheaper so there's more willingness to take it to the edge.
...unless you're not planning on taking it to the edge- but then why else get a ducati.
@cforcalvin i will be a newcomer soon but i am budgeted and also have an aggressive riding history with anything that has wheels on it which is why im concerned i will grow out of a "first purchase bike" too quickly and still have no money to go bigger. do you have any suggestions?
@n8032 if you're skilled with stick shift, then find a honda f2 or yamaha fzr. Predictable low end, but can push to high speeds easily. If youre new to manual shifting or not well versed i cant recommend anything above a 500cc. You could try a suzuki 500 but i have to suggest 250 until you are fluent with throttle control, downshifting, and weight shifting to corner. Safety first especially if you are hot blooded.
im pretty sure these guys do the worst reviews. Ducati will always be that little bit ahead of an aprilia. both of the bike are incredible but the Monster will throw around a bit better.
Basically all America cared about is the bigger engine and power so dont take it from them.
but the Tuono factory did beat the 999 at daytona in 2006 by 12 seconds :D
50cc & 80-100 more lbs makes the Shiver more of a "real motorcycle" than the 696??? Come on. ....additionally, I think anyone getting into motorcycling for the first time would be making a mistake by going with a ducati monster 696. yes, it's very light, nimble and comfortable. Do those qualities make it a "beginners bike?" In my mine, they make it a great bike? So, by your logic here an advanced or non-noobie bike must be heavy, have large displacement, more cumbersome at slow speeds. hmm
@dgmphotography I would be appalled at at anyone recommending an 80hp motorcycle for a first-time-learner. It shouldn't be happening. There are bikes out there that will keep up with this bike in the twisties and have half the engine power.
I agree with others here. Stop calling bikes "beginners" or "entry level" or "girls" A bike is a bike. I've been riding 50 years, had every bike in the book, done more than a million miles on bikes. My current bike, at age 66, is a suzuki 805cc. If anyone calls me a beginner or refers to this bike as a beginner bike I will puke. By their logic, is the Triumph Rocketf III the "experienced rider's bike?" Just shut up about the whole subject of beginners bikes. Bigger is not better.

@MrVergeetmenietje No. Definately not. Entry level may be a used bike that fit's your budget until you sort it out and then trade it in for a new ride of choice. I've seen way too many people go out and buy new/big hp bikes for their first ride. A few get lucky and just get the crap scared out of 'em. Most others have laid them down one way or another. And those are just the HD folk.
@borge225 So Mr. 66 year old. Big question : What are some of the best bikes you've ridden? And do you like motards.. since they are so easy to ride on the turns etc. looking forward to your answer.
Well I apperciate the video, I'm getting into street riding at 23, and I'm pretty much in love with the monster, I feel really comfortable when I get on comparitevely to the crotch rockets my boys are all into. We'll see what happens I guess.
I have the 750 Shiver (2009) and it handles like a dream. I have been riding for 40 years.
This may not be the fastest bike, but damm this is a confident bike. Don't care what the experts say, this bike has the HP, tourque, and handles. I'll take on a Monster any day!
I have a 696 myself and am no beginner. It is a great bike for anyone, you think it through corners with no real effort, which is a blessing and a curse. I've had it out on the track and some serious high speed riding and it does a wonderful job keeping up with the likes of say an 848.
@matoaka21 the monster all the way... u get more for what u pay, it's cheaper, it's faster, it's a ducati and it's sexy. But if you're in the "retro" kind of thing, the ducati won't be your fashion accessory.
"The Monster is a great beginner bike" WTF are you talking about. My Ninja 250r IS a REAL BEGINNER BIKE. But still, my next bike will be the shiver 750, this bike is just awesome.
I don't like the engine feel of the ducati, I drove it myself for 3 days, and the gas cover just feels unfomfortable for me, putting pressure on your nuts constantly no matter how far you slide back on the seat
Yes I want a difficult bike to ride. I want to fight it every inch to get down the road! Beginner bike? These guys are full of crap! Ride the bikes and make your own mind up. When you have to pay real money for a machine then your point of view changes. These guys don't review the bikes they own.
things sure have changed since I first got into riding. back in the day, a bike that did a sub 4 second 0-60 and had a top end of over 150mph was most definitely not considered "entry level" lol.
Good to see a comparison on something other than the latest liter bikes or 600s. For an entry level rider, with deep pockets, these are both great choices. Upgrade the suspension and you have some very fun trackday tools.
@socolax91 These are absolutely entry level bikes for the right rider. Take someone who has been riding dirt bikes for years and decides to get into street riding. These are perfect bikes. In addition, an entry level bike is not necessarily a starter bike. Ninja 250s are starter bikes. SV650s, ninja 650s etc. would all be considered entry level. They have predictable, manageable power that the rider will not outgrow in 2 months.
@sightandsoundevents Sure they are entry-level, but when you do a review, know at least the difference between an entry-level bike and a BEGINNER bike. The monster is maybe the entry-level of ducati, but it's not a beginner bike. I'm beginning at riding (started 2 months ago), my first bike is a ninja 250r (awesome bike for fun and learning) but right now at my level, i'm no sure I will be confortable riding a monster. This is why the guy is an idiot.
Because it's bigger the Aprilia is a "real bike" and the Ducati is a beginner's toy? What an ass. I'm sure he also fails to realize that that big hideous radiator and plumbing as well as the excessive gagetry keep the Aprilia from being truly "naked" in the first place.
I ride an old Gpz 305. It's my first road motorcycle. I'll probably buy the 696 in about two years. I think It's funny they call it a begginer's bike. My 305 can keep up with a mustang GT on a quarter mile and will smoke it in the twisties. You just have to know how to ride. I think the only begginers bikes are the 125 and less, with everything else it's a matter of taste. I'd kill for a RGV250, and I'm a 28 years old who's into bikes since childhood...
I think ducati can be the beginners first bike if the beginner is smart enough =) My first bike was yamaha fazer 400 ccm and I imagine hardly the first bike 125 ccm.
ducati 696 the ideal beginner bike? that's a joke rite. 700ccs and what, ten grand? beginner bike for a rich poser who's either going to put it into a lampost or drop it so many times you couldn't trade it for a lawnmower. start small and cheap, work up to big and expensive
Well, here is a "poser" to say that I did start on a 696. While I will admit, it was more powerful than I imagined it would be I do think it can be a good bike to start on. If you are "rich", which I am. I am loaded, I mean. Can't even count it all, have ten people to help me. :) It is pretty even tempered vs. I4's. Obviously, a 250 would be better but it can be done with this one. I have only hit 3 or 4 lamp poles but I have a pretty hard head and a good helmet.
@Revax30.....LOL dude I loved your comment. I have decided to get the ducati monster as my first bike..thats the 2010 to end one with the 95hp instead of the 85...it will be great if you could tell me some more details of your expirence and how well the bike lasts i.e. is it durable? I am a bit concerned cuz my regular driver is a 2010 corolla and bit concerned if i will end up dead with this bike..?!!
@htedrom No. I Learned to ride on my Dad's Harley Softail Custom. Its an 800 pound machine and didn't drop it once. Buy what you want and learn to ride it. No need to buy a "beginner bike".
@dkparamore1 BTW...I have since switched to sport/touring bikes for the power and fun. The Harley is a shiny, noisy turd. I am riding a Aprilia RST 1000 Futura now.
I agree completely. Attitude and maturity are the biggest reasons new riders crash. As long as the new rider respects the bike and rides safely, there is no problem.
@htedrom well guys, I'm going to get my first bike, and I DON'T have money to buy a cheaper and used bike, than fix the eventual problems which always comes, than sell it for a ridiculous price and what? more money to buy a better one? no, if I buy a bike, I get a good one that last years, just have to be careful, I'm a safe driver and, besides, I'm 31years old, not 13 :)
Well .. If you're not a poor broke ass motherfucker it's a cheap bike, if you get it used it's 5000 euro's (about 2 milion dollars) That's not expensive, it's a small engine, so it's a beginners bike.
I found a loophole in the NJ DMV to get a 50cc derbi senda registered as a moped. Loved it. tuned it up and the thing ripped. Great way to start riding. Miss it too.
08' 695 is my first bike. i love it. super easy to ride and fit me perfect. i'm 5'5" 140lbs. so nimble and is a dream in the turns. the light weight is awesome too. i would recommend it as a first timer bike. just take it easy and take a motorcycle safety course before riding and you'll be fine.
I Agree with Biezestreet55, they say it like they were someone kida Valentino Rossi!
But anyway, these italian V-Twin bikes are better to learn better than the four-in-line japanese bikes because the italian V-Twin are not stupid and violent when you don't know how to drive a sport bike, but in the sametime the italian one are more "crue bike" you need to feel it to drive, the japaneses are much more soft than italians... Hugs!
Easier to ride from stop light to stop light thanks to the wet clutch and lack of need to "spool up" the engine to get to the power band. Great brakes and handling, and lightweight. I haven't ridden the shiver, though, I'm assuming it's similar
Think they are sayin the V twin is a good starting engine..but i think a better starter bike would be the Ninja 650 or the SV650, not these Italian twins
YA.... Lets put a newbie on a Ducati, Lets get him on a fairly expensive bike and hope for the best, instead of just getting a real beginer bike. Cause if you crash that cheap one you wont look as cool flipping in the air with your nice red tubular framed duke. 0.o The fuck would buy a ducati for their 1st bike COME ON
My first bike is a ducati 696. I was smart enough to take the cycle course and explore all the options. This is a great starter bike and I think any beginner should look at it. Ducati Man!
Actually, we sell LOTS of 696s to beginner riders. The 696 and previous model "small" monsters are the best selling Ducati models year after year because they're great beginner bikes. You should find your local dealer and test ride a Monster for yourself.
there is just no way I would get one for my first bike, or if I had a son or daughter. I have been riding bikes since I was a kid and still my first bike was a 98 zx6 and that doesnt have nearly what this duke has. Nore does it cost nearly as much. Just doesnt make sense
im surely not sticking up for these guys, but maybe they mean beginner racer, so someone who has experience but wants to start tracking a bike. i don't know, maybe. they still sound like idiots though
those r 2 great bikes aslong as u live in italy, buy 1 on america & wait till it breaks, u will be fusterated with the lack of dealers, parts, service & what will really kick ur ass, the price u will be stiffed with on parts/service/labor,,,

125cc, 250cc are beginner bikes, not 700/750cc.
Or maybe the Y2K is what you'd call a real men's bike?
You really don't know much about motorcycles, do you?

Farings reduce wind drag, meaning the wind affects you less, not more.
Anyway, I ride for fun, not standards or 'stability'. To each his own. I've never had a problem with a 250 on the highway, ride it every day.
elamd 5 months ago

Yes, from the front, which is why I said "crosswinds". How many other bikes have you ridden?
JACKtheRIPP3R189 5 months ago
@JACKtheRIPP3R189
What you said was "250s being very light bikes and with lots of fairing meaning crosswinds effect a 250 rider more."
So you're plainly saying is fairings affect crosswinds. but whatever.
How many bikes have I ridden? I dunno. 10 maybe. But what I'm commenting on is what i ride EVERY DAY. a 250, on the highway. Get it?
fyi, anyone who tells a noob to get an 800 cc , 500 lb bike as a first bike isn't giving good advice, imo.

Use the power band and the clutch.
razorx3113 7 months ago
Compare Ducati with Aprilia that often you want...Ducati Monster 696 is already a legend. The Aprilia Shiver has no emotion, perhaps his engine is bigger but skill goes before power. I would take the Ducati Monster, you have better tuning options then the Aprilia ;-)

mmm ducati...dont care about aprillia im a ducati fan all the way so sexy and great handling great all around.maybe its a good starter bike for someone who has a lot of money and half a brain, but i would definitely not recomend for your first bike. start low and cheap like already said by another commenter, and then work up. maybe a good starter bike for track racing? by the time u get into that you should have a feel of what your doing on a bike so then i could see it being a good starter bike
Servatis17 10 months ago
If you mainly ride in cities, I'd get the 696 for it's flickability. Easier to dodge the cages. Highway-the apirilla.

alright so im looking for my first bike, and ive been really interested in the ducati monsters. ive been looking in the 2001 area for em. just wondering if the 600cc-700cc (cant remember exact displacement) would be a good first bike? i dont wanna kill myself. i mean i have expierience on bikes, ive raced mx since i was 7. but have never really done anything with any kind of street bike. so i want so power, but at the same time i dont wanna kill myself. any advice/help??
moto4runner 10 months ago
@moto4runner NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fengg9 10 months ago

I LOVE IT !!
DanBoy2DaMaxXx 1 year ago 5
@DanBoy2DaMaxXx My Shiver 750 "Howl" has had the opportunity to crush several Ducati monsters.
Nothing handles like the shiver in the tight corners, including bikes that are almost half again as expensive.
Aprilia is the only bike to compete and WIN against Ducati.
Iamvalcristvalentine 6 months ago
@Iamvalcristvalentine I love ducs, but unless you're a new rider (the monster is more novice-friendly) who wouldn't spring for the shiver? It's got more oomph and has a lot of cool technology crammed in it. I recently sold my smaller bike to get an 1198 for track days and I wish I hadn't since, while an awesome motorcycle, it blows for commuting and in-town use. Thinking about getting a shiver as a more day-to-day bike, knowing the upsides of the bike have you had any downs with it?
JACKtheRIPP3R189 5 months ago
@JACKtheRIPP3R189: for a commuting bike (which is what i am using it for) its hard to beat the shiver 750.
The only constructive criticism I could make is the stock saddle is rock hard and wide.(that took some getting used to) and the heads up display has no fuel gauge, although it has a "put gas in your bike now light" with a reserve tank. I think being able to see exactly how much gas you have would be an improvement. Other then that, no complaints at all.
Iamvalcristvalentine 5 months ago
@Iamvalcristvalentine Well my duc is the same way about gas and seats are easy to replace. I'll have to go check them out.

jflair16 1 year ago
@jflair16 well either you're rich or you need finance counseling, cuz where i'm from- nobody starts with a ducati when you're first learning to corner or downshift. if you are budgeted like me, then you wanna learn to push hard on something cheaper so there's more willingness to take it to the edge.
...unless you're not planning on taking it to the edge- but then why else get a ducati.
cforcalvin 1 year ago
@cforcalvin i will be a newcomer soon but i am budgeted and also have an aggressive riding history with anything that has wheels on it which is why im concerned i will grow out of a "first purchase bike" too quickly and still have no money to go bigger. do you have any suggestions?
n8032 11 months ago
@n8032 if you're skilled with stick shift, then find a honda f2 or yamaha fzr. Predictable low end, but can push to high speeds easily. If youre new to manual shifting or not well versed i cant recommend anything above a 500cc. You could try a suzuki 500 but i have to suggest 250 until you are fluent with throttle control, downshifting, and weight shifting to corner. Safety first especially if you are hot blooded.

@cforcalvin all i drive is stick. thank you for the advice brother. all great points.

So, by your logic here an advanced or non-noobie bike must be heavy, have large displacement, more cumbersome at slow speeds. hmm
dgmphotography 1 year ago 2
@dgmphotography I would be appalled at at anyone recommending an 80hp motorcycle for a first-time-learner. It shouldn't be happening. There are bikes out there that will keep up with this bike in the twisties and have half the engine power.

MrVergeetmenietje 8 months ago
@MrVergeetmenietje No. Definately not. Entry level may be a used bike that fit's your budget until you sort it out and then trade it in for a new ride of choice. I've seen way too many people go out and buy new/big hp bikes for their first ride. A few get lucky and just get the crap scared out of 'em. Most others have laid them down one way or another. And those are just the HD folk.

Good to see a comparison on something other than the latest liter bikes or 600s. For an entry level rider, with deep pockets, these are both great choices. Upgrade the suspension and you have some very fun trackday tools.
sightandsoundevents 1 year ago
@sightandsoundevents - these are in no way entry level bikes... try a GS500 or Ninja 500 as a starter
socolax91 1 year ago
@socolax91 These are absolutely entry level bikes for the right rider. Take someone who has been riding dirt bikes for years and decides to get into street riding. These are perfect bikes. In addition, an entry level bike is not necessarily a starter bike. Ninja 250s are starter bikes. SV650s, ninja 650s etc. would all be considered entry level. They have predictable, manageable power that the rider will not outgrow in 2 months.
sightandsoundevents 1 year ago
@sightandsoundevents Sure they are entry-level, but when you do a review, know at least the difference between an entry-level bike and a BEGINNER bike. The monster is maybe the entry-level of ducati, but it's not a beginner bike. I'm beginning at riding (started 2 months ago), my first bike is a ninja 250r (awesome bike for fun and learning) but right now at my level, i'm no sure I will be confortable riding a monster. This is why the guy is an idiot.

My 305 can keep up with a mustang GT on a quarter mile and will smoke it in the twisties. You just have to know how to ride. ducati 696 the ideal beginner bike? that's a joke rite.
