hemingway suggested you create lots of backstory, but leave most of it out of the book. as long as you, the writer, know all the backstory, the writing will reveal hints of what came before so you don't have to waste too much time giving full character histories.
it is amazing how stories start, 30 years ago i wrote a short story about a time traveler hunting dinosaurs, that was the whole story. over the years it has grown to involve many characters, different timelines.
