@salemsidelines I had 2 of them in Zimbabwe in a tropical/ semi arid environment and the coped with the heat very well, they need a lot of water and a load of food and a good deal of exercise, but were bred as farm dogs/guard dogs in a very hot country so I think you'll have no problem there, as for the jaw..... they dont come much stronger than this
Just wondering what might happen to the guy with the sleeve if you lost the grip on the lead. Would the dog attack the guy or would it listen to you and stop. Nice looking dog
The man with the bitearm has no idea what his doing... The dog just open the mouth and the arm is there... The dog shall go for the arm not the arm for the dogs mouth...
This was very interesting to watch as I own Fila Brasileiros. The dog didn't back down which speaks to good breeding and a strong nervous system. The only "negative" comment I'm going to make is IMO the decoy should have had a whip, and as soon as the dog got the sleeve have the decoy come back at the dog with the whip snapping to prevent the dog from getting "sleeve happy". It teaches the dog that the human is the object not the sleeve.
Well done for teaching your dog to lash out at new or unexpected events. This is why large breeds are at risk of specific banning legislation. Controlled agression is still agression and what tests do you do to establish the suitability of the owners.
yesterday i walked with my american stafford and i saw 3 boerboel and 1 dogo argentino wow it whas amazing to see those 5 playing :D what a perfect dog sweet when your owner trust you but agressive when he you dont trust the attacker !
@itsaboerboelthing What the fuck is this comment about, you cant teach your dog how much of the "intruders" arm to put into his mouth...... what a fucking stupid comment. How about you put all of your arm in your dogs mouth then flick his nuts with a toffee hammer...maybe that will help?
@SG02JATT For intelligence and trainability - definitely a german shepherd. I love boerboels, but they are not the most trainable breed in the world, but if all you need is protection in the home, then a boerboel is fine. Although I personally prefer Fila brasileiro or caucasian ovcharka. They are one notch more intense towards strangers in my opinion. Maybe even two notches :)
I see your another one of the many rocket scientist who can't grasp and understand a simple question. If you knew anything about this sort if thing you would have understood the question. Dumb ass

I've got a 9 week old Boerboel and I've been looking at different types of training for him when he's old enough. I can safely say he'll be trying Schutzhund. The amount of control these guys have over their dogs is amazing!
how are they going to tell the difference between some regular guy and a real threat? This bugs me. I have a Boerboel. Best dog ever. And he's smart enough to know on his own. What you guys are doing I don't know.
@bulldogger71 For some reason all that crossed my mind reading your response is "Shut up". That's unusual.. I usually have some feedback to give whether negative or positive. It seems like you were just itching to say something. W/e. Ok, sure I will *rolls eyes*
@bulldogger71 Same here. And the song wasn't really to be a tribute - it was supposed to match the story I was trying to tell between Trunks and Vegeta and it wasn't bad.
I didn't even say so much as for there to be something to respond to. I was just confused on some things, whether they're right, and then what further. At least you don't seem to be stupid either...
Much Respect to you for taking the time to PP Test your dog, be willing to share it with others that they might be able to learn something from it, then being honest about what the test revealed to you about your dog.
I refer folks to your TESTING Video often.. & you aren't alone w/ people not understanding the concept. LOL -I posted a PP Testing video awhile back & a ton of folks commented on the dog's lack of control too.. they just don't know any better.
Awesome video, it was one of the influences that made me get a Boerboel myself. Getting another one this spring, a female though. Not for breeding though, to many people doing it now already.
How old would you suggest they be before you start protection training? My boy is almost a year and so far he is a good protector, but still needs work on his confidence. Just awesome dogs though, I am hooked on the breed for sure. Nice work.
One question. We have 3 other dogs. A 50lb male pit, a 80lb male boxer/shepard mix, and a 40 lb female coydog all fixed and between 3 and 7 years old. We were think of a boerboel in about a year cuz were buying a house on 4 acres in the mountains and they seem like they awsome dogs in every way. Think the dogs would get along?
I own dutchies and boels. I do ringsport with the dutchies. This dog had a horrible bite only using the end of its nose and a little bit of canines, not getting a good deep bite, played tug of war and kept loosing focus of the sleeve (when released) to eyeball the person, all a bad combo for protection training. I do agree that this dog should not persue high pressure protection work and should stay at home and guard as he was designed. This is the difference of a thinking and reacting breed.
@aytan1malka Is this all natural protection instincts we are seeing in this video?
I would like to know if they are a reliable protection dog. They are very nice looking dogs thats for sure, they look very natural and healthy. Probably due to their natural-selection kind of history.
@aytan1malka At the end of the day though, that dog will still protect you with a shallow bite + his presence alone will be enough of a deterrent. He reminds me a lot of my bullmastiff
@Suestorm69 i am confused with your comment, which breed has no deep bite and looses focus on the sleeve?? And what do you mean with dutchies?? i presume the dutch shepherd, right??
I am interested in the mastiff and would like to know the basic difference between the South African and the Italian breeds. Which make better guard dogs ,especially when other dogs are involved.
I cant speak about the italian mastiff but the Boerboel was bred from a number of western mastif type breeds and african dogs to specificaly gaurd the whole family without being a vicious dog. The boerboel also worked on the farm with cattle and protected them from wild animals. Its not so much the breed as it is the breeder, the dogs parents and the way the dog is brought up and trained. If you want a gaurd dog you need to be specific with the breeder.
If it was just a temperment test it doesn't mean that it was unsuitable for protection. You'd need to see how the dog responds to a non-aggressive decoy. The decoy was being v. aggressive and the dog responded. Fact is, it showed fantastic defense, but you'd want to test its stability also. I'm under the assumption that it has had no training before? I don't want to argue but I like the dog already. I have an 11y.o. Belgian Mal. import so I'm not new to this. He's napping at my feet right now.:)
Thanks for your very knowlegable comment. Infact part of the test included Sultan reacting to a non-aggressive decoy. It was here he failed badly as he now recognised the decoy he just wanted to kill him regardless of the threat. this plus other reasons we stopped protection training. As I keep saying he is a superb gaurd and the best freind anyone could have! thanks again for your comment.
Ratter15 thanks for your comment. As our video clearly states this was a protection testing not training. The difference being testing allows the dog freedom of action for us to evaluate his behaviour. Based on his actions we decided protection work was not for him. If we were protection training we would of course as standard prioritise control.
Im with MrCanine9 with this, I saw absolutely no control over this dog, teaching a dog like this to be aggressive with so little control is a very dangerous dog, Man it was pulling you along the ground!!! Try getting some control instead of just aggression!!! Surely the control of the dog comes before the aggression training!!!
Great video, great dog, like the website too, just wondering why your dog didn't pass the personal protect grade because he looks to have done well in this video. Im undecided about which one of these 4 dogs i want: Boerboel, Cane Corso, dogue de boardex or rottweiler.
Thanks for your comments! Sultan is a great Guard dog but didnt quite make the grade as a personal protection dog. As far as what dog to get all the dogs you mention are good, the key to getting a good dog is researching the breeder. Personally I would always choose the Boerboel.
Beautiful lookin dog...tho it looks like a FAT Rhodesian...but with a worse temprement..love Big dogs and its first ive heard of a Boerboel...i been to South Africa n only saw Staffordshire Bulls,Ridgebacks n German Shepards...
Boerboels are good, period. Not super as every dog's owner want their dog to be, but Boerboels are good. However, this particular one in the video needs to work on a more balanced and calm bite. Of course he's a young learning dog, but issues such as stability must be addressed quickly. I'd like to see another video on this dog, but for now I think his biting and aggression come from fear.
Thanks for your coment. I agree with what you say. Boerboels are good dogs. Sultan is my dog and so to me he is super. As a protection dog Sultan did not make the grade hence why there are no more video's. As a gaurd dog he has truly proved his worth.
My husband and I have given serious consideration to adopting a Boerboel into our family and have done considerable research into the breed, videos like yours have helped us come to the conclusion that these beautiful and intelligent dogs will most certainly suit the love/protection/companionship needs of our family (My husband works away) the protection testing is necessary, it is paramount that with such a powerful dog that you know what it's capabilities are, cheers Aytan! Sultan is adorable
Boerboel is a turkish Kangal [ Karabas] its the 1 dog who can kills leopard, Wolves, and another big cats.. he has the strongest musculature from the dogs ;) africa buyed this kind of dogs because of them ;)
Kangal is a great dog but it is not a Boerboel. Both are good dogs used in simular but still different enviroments. No one breed is best, it is the individual dog, many breeds have great dogs.
lots of idiotic comments about the boerboel. This is the best breed of big dogs. if you ever owned one, you would know why. Good testing so far. Looks like he's living up to the snuff of a South African Mastiff. bravo
No you thick idiot you have no idea. Protection testing, do you brain cells not understand? We are allowing the dog freedom to react how he would naturally to see wether he has the ability to protect we are not making him do anything, he is free to react however he wants. Based on his reactions we would determine wether or not he can become a protection dog. I'm not replying to anymore of your dumb ass comments
cause they are full of crap and I would be wasting my time.
I know dog psychology. You are encouraging aggressive/excited behaviour and this is wrong. You are going to create problems. This breed is the most protective dog breed and was bred to guard the homestead... So, if any harm were to come to you or your family, the dog would sense this and its' natural instincts would kick in. No need for testing and training sorry. Do your research.
HAHAHAHAHA, well at least you made me laugh.. You know nothing. Did you quickly visit a few boerboel websites to get that little bit of information? Listen you thick idiot although the breed was bred to gaurd amongst other things not all Boerboels excel in gaurd or protection duties, just as some GD's dont make good police dogs. The only way to know is to test them. YES THATS RIGHT, TEST THEM.
Listen sunshine watch your mouth. I don't mind people making a point but there is no need for crap like that. If you knew anything about the Boerboel you would know they see the whole family as the pack leader, they certainly see us as that. Take time to read and understand before making dumb ass comments
Looks like a Tosa or a Fila and will probably die out like them because American Bulldogs dominant weight pull and Schutzhund. Be American, buy American.
bulldogs? kangal [boerboel] is so much bigger and sooo much stronger its the first dog who can kill leopards and wolves.. bulldog can kill rats or so.. and then people buys kangals for protection not pitbulls or bulldogs.
we have a boerboel... probably the best dog we've had! intelligent... friendly to those who he needs to be friendly with.... i mean i can take a bone out of his mouth... but he is fierce with those he needs to scare away... brilliant guard dog...
only one problem... he hates the heat... so he's always in the room with the air condition haha
Stunning dog , would like to get one at some point but i think i might get some experience with some smaller protection dogs 1st, because that thing looks like a powerhouse.
I dont think a Boerboel "needs" protection training, but any dog should be trained. You need to know that in the event of an incident your dog is controllable and you know how to read and anticipate your dog. you have to put the dog into a bite situaiton to 1. know that it will bite 2. teach it where and how to bite 3. teach it to let go this keeps your dog from mauling the hell out of someone for 10 minutes while you scream and pry it off, and then you get charges filed against you for it.
We have a boerboel at home and he is so gentle. If someone he doesn't know is the gate he'll bark but when we get to the gate he'll calm down once he knows that it's fine. Good watch dogs. I think that a boerboel is a good choice for a dog.
wow what a stunning dog! I owned a male bullmastiff and trained him 2lunge and bark if u tensed the lead, wen i was out for a walk with him! 5lads approched me and told me 2hand him over! He barked and lunged on command till they were out of view, I was petrified at the time, after he just developed a thing about men walking past us and would tense up and put himself between me and the male! I trusted that dog with my life!do u no ne uk breeders? Good luck with ur training!
Thanks for your comment and opinion. doing protection training proved to be a real benefit in our case as it made sultan a much more calm and rounded out dog. not all boerboels are natural gaurds and also gaurding and protection are actually two different things. Our female boerboel Zeeba is a natural watch dog, neither a gaurd or a protection dog. Do you have an video's or pictures of your boerboel on you tube? kind regards
I agree they are all very different things. And it all depends on the guards generall personality, problems arise when you train a dog that isnt suited to furfilling the task you require.
i.e trainin a dog that has naturaly agresive temperment is probably a bad idea you want to focus on genral obedience with a dog like that,so you can control its natural agresion rather than excentuating its agresive tendencies and thus creating a dangerous dog. basically just leave it to profesionals we get paid well for a reason its not just physically training its understanding their temperment and personality and choosing the ideal tasks for them and the most effective training methods to use
Np gorgeous dog btw, don't see them here in Northern Irelnd very similar to bullmastiff in appearance though. Whats the general breed temperment like similar to that of a bullmastiff, rottie?
are you grouping defensive tendencies into the "Aggression" catagory? i agree if a dog has the tendency to attack you shouldnt train it to do so, quite the opposite. but i believe its a good thing to train a guardian type dog how to follow commands during an altercation. otherwise if he/she is ever in a situation where he/she feels threatened or feels like the family or property is under attack the dog wont listen. a good guard dog can be called off without hesitation. do we agree?
hey ur dog so cool i love his temperament and the intelligience of ur dog...superb guard dog...i give 1000 percent for that score.i was surprise....good boy doggy....

It teaches the dog that the human is the object not the sleeve.

Thanks for your nice comment. All the best with your search for a Boerboel

Boerboel is a turkish Kangal [ Karabas] its the 1 dog who can kills leopard, Wolves, and another big cats.. he has the strongest musculature from the dogs ;) africa buyed this kind of dogs because of them ;)
Karadenizpiskopat 2 years ago
Kangal is a great dog but it is not a Boerboel. Both are good dogs used in simular but still different enviroments. No one breed is best, it is the individual dog, many breeds have great dogs.
aytan1malka 2 years ago
lots of idiotic comments about the boerboel. This is the best breed of big dogs. if you ever owned one, you would know why. Good testing so far. Looks like he's living up to the snuff of a South African Mastiff. bravo

Thank you
aytan1malka 2 years ago
No you thick idiot you have no idea. Protection testing, do you brain cells not understand? We are allowing the dog freedom to react how he would naturally to see wether he has the ability to protect we are not making him do anything, he is free to react however he wants. Based on his reactions we would determine wether or not he can become a protection dog. I'm not replying to anymore of your dumb ass comments
cause they are full of crap and I would be wasting my time.
aytan1malka 2 years ago
Protection for what???..............
Do your research.
choosechristianity24 2 years ago
HAHAHAHAHA, well at least you made me laugh.. You know nothing. Did you quickly visit a few boerboel websites to get that little bit of information? Listen you thick idiot although the breed was bred to gaurd amongst other things not all Boerboels excel in gaurd or protection duties, just as some GD's dont make good police dogs. The only way to know is to test them. YES THATS RIGHT, TEST THEM.
aytan1malka 2 years ago
you right there is no need for that...lol...but ithink he was ust trying to show off his dog XD
gargola18 2 years ago
NO!!!!!!!!! u have no idea...theres no need 2 make ANY dog aggressive...no need at all its ppl like u who cause proplems with dogs .
CWA1982 2 years ago
all ur doing is making ur dog aggressive u halfwit, and u leting him be the pack leader and thats not good. noob
CWA1982 2 years ago
Listen sunshine watch your mouth. I don't mind people making a point but there is no need for crap like that. If you knew anything about the Boerboel you would know they see the whole family as the pack leader, they certainly see us as that. Take time to read and understand before making dumb ass comments

Looks like a Tosa or a Fila and will probably die out like them because American Bulldogs dominant weight pull and Schutzhund. Be American, buy American.
sidelinesidelines 2 years ago
The Bulldog's a product of Europe. Like Mercedez .
BrottarbrallanIV 2 years ago
bulldogs? kangal [boerboel] is so much bigger and sooo much stronger its the first dog who can kill leopards and wolves.. bulldog can kill rats or so.. and then people buys kangals for protection not pitbulls or bulldogs.
Karadenizpiskopat 2 years ago
lol those dog arent as great as a boerboel nothing in america is better than stuff from other countriesXD

i wonder if a boerboel can pull more weight then a pitbull?
lilstaffy 2 years ago
There are some Boerboel's in USA that do weight pulling but the champs are still the pits when it comes to weight pulling.
aytan1malka 2 years ago
we have a boerboel... probably the best dog we've had! intelligent... friendly to those who he needs to be friendly with.... i mean i can take a bone out of his mouth... but he is fierce with those he needs to scare away... brilliant guard dog...
only one problem... he hates the heat... so he's always in the room with the air condition haha

Stunning dog , would like to get one at some point but i think i might get some experience with some smaller protection dogs 1st, because that thing looks like a powerhouse.

Omg, these dogs have power. I have a brother and sister boerboel/lab and they're strong. And theyre anly 10months!!
dayav07 3 years ago
I dont think a Boerboel "needs" protection training, but any dog should be trained. You need to know that in the event of an incident your dog is controllable and you know how to read and anticipate your dog. you have to put the dog into a bite situaiton to 1. know that it will bite 2. teach it where and how to bite 3. teach it to let go this keeps your dog from mauling the hell out of someone for 10 minutes while you scream and pry it off, and then you get charges filed against you for it.

Nice dog, a bit of a puller but I'm sure he'll calm down as training progresses, he certainly has a good defensive drive.

Good luck with ur training!

you dont need to train a boerboel to protect your family . i have one . all there doings is making him dangerous.
500passwords 3 years ago
Thanks for your comment and opinion. doing protection training proved to be a real benefit in our case as it made sultan a much more calm and rounded out dog. not all boerboels are natural gaurds and also gaurding and protection are actually two different things. Our female boerboel Zeeba is a natural watch dog, neither a gaurd or a protection dog. Do you have an video's or pictures of your boerboel on you tube? kind regards
aytan1malka 3 years ago
I agree they are all very different things. And it all depends on the guards generall personality, problems arise when you train a dog that isnt suited to furfilling the task you require.
kreeperrock 3 years ago
i.e trainin a dog that has naturaly agresive temperment is probably a bad idea you want to focus on genral obedience with a dog like that,so you can control its natural agresion rather than excentuating its agresive tendencies and thus creating a dangerous dog. basically just leave it to profesionals we get paid well for a reason its not just physically training its understanding their temperment and personality and choosing the ideal tasks for them and the most effective training methods to use
kreeperrock 3 years ago
Many Thanks for your coments. I agree with what you say.
aytan1malka 3 years ago
Np gorgeous dog btw, don't see them here in Northern Irelnd very similar to bullmastiff in appearance though. Whats the general breed temperment like similar to that of a bullmastiff, rottie?
kreeperrock 3 years ago
I agree. A boerboel doesn't need to be protection tested. Should the need for protection ever arise, the dog will protect instinctually regardless.
BluntActivist2008 3 years ago
But it needs to be able to be called off, otherwise, if it kills somebody it will be destroyed.
ElHanko 3 years ago
are you grouping defensive tendencies into the "Aggression" catagory? i agree if a dog has the tendency to attack you shouldnt train it to do so, quite the opposite. but i believe its a good thing to train a guardian type dog how to follow commands during an altercation. otherwise if he/she is ever in a situation where he/she feels threatened or feels like the family or property is under attack the dog wont listen. a good guard dog can be called off without hesitation. do we agree?
jrowe6 3 years ago
Very nice BB. Got a 15 months old male. No one can get on my property and if they do they never gonna run away. Amazing watch dogs. :)
