I think that wiki is not good for learning how to do brain surgery...for example :) but it is a good source of information. And I also think that when it comes to certain subjects, it is not extensive, but for sure it is watched closely by the editors, that are very educated and passionate about it and don't let mistakes stay on for long.

I LOVE wiki and it helped me so many times. I think that it has very reliable information and that it will get even better, that's why it should be supported. But yes, Wikipedia is one of the most, if not THE most, important sites on the Internet. I can only imagine what it costs to support and maintain that tremendous compendium of knowledge. Be happy that they are only asking for donations instead of making it a pay site. If you can afford it, you should support it.

Because a lot of regular editors have said that they'd quit if Wikipedia had advertisements. Also, I think that would endanger the Wikimedia Foundation's non-profit status.
i think most editors would cease editing if real ads were to show up (working for free to make someone else make bucks? not likely to happen). But it is quite possible that readers wouldn't mind it much (they would only be here to read, and most websites which are not publicly editable use ads).
In any case, ads are (so far) blockable with various extensions for Firefox.
I have AS(Asperger Syndrome) and one of my interests is wiki, I am getting ready for a while to become a seroius contributor(trauma). I also get distracted easy, adds would be something that would make me give up looking or making any contribution for wiki. But I can see your point. They need money, that's true. It's getting bigger and they need funds.

I think it's a bad idea, because it has been proved that unr. users generally produce badly formatted articles (usually newcomers who are unfamiliar with the wiki system), spam, vandalism and such. The idea is very good. However it is also of big use for students, scientists, business people and everyone who needs a rapid information about some topic and do not intend to read a 1000 pages book on some topic. One thing, polish is the 4th most popular language in Wikipedia and it is not mentioned. Don't they now about country called Poland?

Wiki should not use ads for funding. Using ads means the content is effected and influenced by marketing demands. That completely eliminates the point, don't you think?
Won't happen. It's been suggested many times. However, a key principle of Wikipedia is NPOV. Advertising could adversely affect that, or the impression that Wikipedia is neutral. Also, numerous editors on Wikipedia would strongly object to ads on the site, and may stop editing.

-Content under GFDL ("forking" allowed)
-Fairly accurate and up to date
-You can help build it
Disadvantages of Wikipedia:
-Mirrors of wiki pages amplify errors through the web
-GFDL (potential legal issues regarding copyright)
-Most of the information can be found on other websites anyway
-Is becoming too big and "too many cooks spoil the broth"

I've heard they're planning to allow unregistered users to create pages, starting November 11. I think it's a bad idea, because it has been proved that unr. users generally produce badly formatted articles (usually newcomers who are unfamiliar with the wiki system), spam, vandalism and such. The idea is very good. However it is also of big use for students, scientists, business people and everyone who needs a rapid information about some topic and do not intend to read a 1000 pages book on some topic. One thing, polish is the 4th most popular language in Wikipedia and it is not mentioned. Don't they now about country called Poland?

Won't happen. It's been suggested many times. However, a key principle of Wikipedia is NPOV. Advertising could adversely affect that, or the impression that Wikipedia is neutral. Also, numerous editors on Wikipedia would strongly object to ads on the site, and may stop editing.

I love Wikipedia. But you have to be careful how you use it. I was looking up an article on J.J. Thomson today. At the end of the article, someone edited it to say "video killed the radio star." It has been changed since then though.

WikiMEDIA Foundation is a not-for-profit. There is a distinct commercial venture, Wikia.
This fundraiser is to make sure Wikipedia doesn't have to be sold to corporate interests and plastered with advertising.
Give them 25 bucks at least, that'd probably not even buy you a single volume children's encyclopedia - but it is the aim for the donation average.
