Why did you change the back lights into 4 separate? You guys already have that type like that on the corvette AND Camaro!!! DON'T RUIN THOSE CARS WITH THIS DESIGN!!!
vs rear wheel drive, yes, front wheel drive is better in the snow. It's just the other 97% of the time that you're driving on pavement that you want rwd. This is where any upscale sedan should go AWD, RWD, or go home. This is why my lastest purchase is a c class.
@nogaard777 Thats horseshit, I've driven my '94 Caprice through some of the worst snow storms the north east coast has seen in years. Its all a matter of driving skill and tires. I have Indy 500's Firestones on mine.
The only time I have not been able to drive my REAR WHEEL DRIVE 1994 Caprice in the snow was this past snow storm when the only thing that was getting through were Hummer H1s.
@ThunderAppeal What's horseshit? I never said you CAN'T drive a rwd in the snow, I only pointed out that fwd will do better. I've driven my Mustang GT manual with 275s in a blizzard in the wasatch mountains successfully but that doesn't mean a fwd wouldn't have done better. That's just plain physics. Skill will always trump machinery but 90% of the people out there are COMMUTERS not drivers. They need that traction advantage to not run the busload of nuns and orphans off the road.
@ThunderAppeal I didn't contradict myself. They drive FWD not RWD cars. If you're seriously trying to say RWD is better IN THE SNOW I'm wasting my time as you've failed physics 101. Weight>tires>ground=traction. RWD is better in the dry due to weight transfer but in the snow you never achieve the weight transfer. If you read my earlier post you'll see I wrote ONE LINE about fwd being better in the snow but saying the praises of RWD the other 97% of the time.
@ThunderAppeal But I agree on this part: I would also never buy a fwd car due to the obnoxious torque steer when you have more than 100 hp. I live in the rocky mountains where 4 months of the year you can be suddenly hit with snow at any given time. It was snowing here 3 days ago. >< This is why I have a 4matic. The computer makes it a RWD in the dry and an AWD in the wet/snow for the best traction at all times. Unless you're saying thousands of engineers are idiots and all cars should be rwd?
This is the one side of GM that always leaves me depressed. They can make the coolest concepts but after the old guys counting the pennies get their hands on them we end up with plastic filled cars with safe designs that will never offend grandpa and never excite anyone. Bring back pontiac and don't rein them in like you have for 5 decades. Those guys were car guys.
The tail lights are 100% better than the current ones. The tail lights on the current model always bothered me. The looked incomplete and didn't jive with the rest of the clean design.
Why Shanghai? Chevy is (or at least was) an American based manufacturer. i really makes me mad they are showing this off first in shanghai. i dont care about the international markets. The home market should come first.
@gunnlover A lot of companies are doing this now. Like it or not, China is the most important market for cars right now. Besides, it debuts here the very next day.
Don't concepts usually come out a few years before production hits? I'm sure the reveal will be the production model if its supposed to be a 2012. 2012 sells start late this year which is not very far.
No matter what they do, it's going to look more boring than the Charger. But then again, a Kodiak Grizzly Bear riding a Captain America chopper and juggling flaming chainsaws, looks more boring than the Charger.
Really, if you're looking for a powerful, rear-drive four-door that's actually affordable, you're basically left with the choice of whether to buy the Charger, or the 300C. GM had a GREAT thing going with the Pontiac G8, but that unfortunately didn't survive.
@JETZcorp First off spelling is key here man. If you lived in any of the snow belt states or canada maybe you do, you would know that FWD is prefered over RWD. The Malibu isn't going to going after the Charger. Its main purpose is to try to compete with the Accord/Camry/Altima etc etc. Midsized FWD! family haulers. If GM wanted to go after the Chargers sales they would reintroduce the Commodore before the redesign in 2014 and sell it with a small 6 and the option of a V8 on the High end models.
@CaptanCron Although I agree with the malibu just being a people hauler, I disagree with the blanket statement that FWD is preferred. I live in Ontario and have driven well over a half million kms in both front and rwd vehicles. I will take a RWD over FWD everyday and twice on Sunday. It is a much superior platform for handling, proportions and balance. Until GM makes a mid size RWD, I will not be shopping GM.
@hooper0071 I agree with you completely. I prefer RWD myself. I drive a '95 impala ss as my summer car and an old 9C1 Caprice as my winter beater in Ontario also. But not everyone thinks like us. Most people don't give two shits about how they get from point a to b as long as they get there. FWD is better in the snow so thats why people flock to FWD cars. They don't car about handling. I also will be staying away from GM for a bit. Nothing they make right now fits what I need except the G8.
@JETZcorp totally agree; the General's lads -namely CHEVY- need to stop faking themselves and START TO MAKE ECXITING HIGH-PERFORMANCE SPORT SEDANS TO COMPETE WITH THE LIKES OF BMW [3-series], MERCEDES-BENZ [C-class] AND LEXUS [IS-series] IN.....
1. PRICE [great performance and overall looks for less buck$]
2. PERFORMANCE [outrun those monsters, that is]
3. VALUE [way more bang for your well-earned money]
@JETZcorp i dont think the malibu is trying to compete in the category of large, RWD sedans. its more of a midsized economical and affordibal car. in fact they said that the next model plans to have either a 2.5 4cyl or some kind of eco engine
@JETZcorp the charger is like a tranny. it use to be a muscle car untold they cut its dick off and now its a sport sedan aka lady sports car for the wife and kids
@gbthrilla The new Charger has nothing to do with the old one. It's just a big, beefy sport sedan that was supposed to look "aggressive" and "retro," and then some idiot in marketing (probably one of the Daimler idiots) thought it would sell better if they called it the Charger. There's no use trying to compare the new Charger to the old one, just as there's no use trying to compare a new Impala to the old badass ones. Try thinking of it as the "Dodge Mauler" and the car suddenly makes sense.
The tail lights arent a far cry in my oppinion. They remind me more of the 71-72 Malibu tail lights than the 2010/11 Camaro. What i say they should do is ditch the front wheel drive aspect, leave that to the Caprice and Impala, make this the rear wheel drive powerhouse coupe to rival the Charger and call the performance model Chevelle ;D
@318i Tease being the key, because nine times out of ten, when you see the finished product, it's a huge let down . . . Not always, but general rule of thumb. Concept looks awesome, production vehicle super boring.
Typical, GM uses design cues from other popular GM cars to sell it off as a new design. What a load seriously, the Camaro and. Malibu have nothing in common why give it the same tail lights?
@Nathanisking Most car companies spread design cues across most of their line-up, it's called brand identity, look at Nissan for an example. Why not inject a little performance car styling into a mid-size sedan? The mid-size sedan segment is full of boring looking "appliance" type cars like the Camry and Accord. I'd much rather have an Altima ,Malibu, or even a Sonata that share design cues with performance cars than, say, a Camry that shares cues with cars like the Corolla or Yaris.
@pokey6733 Camry/Corolla I understand but Camaro/Malibu? Nope. What's next? ZR1 see through hood? or why not just give the Cruze Camaro tail lights too? Identity is a term used loosely with GM/Ford/Dodge where at one point the only thing that defined what car or truck you had was the damn badge.
@Nathanisking I don't see what your point is. So, if you were in the market for a mid-size sedan, you would rather have a boring, uninspired car that shares it's styling "DNA" with another boring, uninspired car? That's fine if you want to blend in I guess. Personally, I would rather have a sedan that shares styling cues with cars like the 370Z, Camaro, Genesis Coupe, etc.. Do you complain about Nissan making most of their cars share styling cues with the Z?
@Nathanisking Also, it's not like GM made the Malibu look just like the Camaro. The only thing they did was give it taillights SIMILAR to the Camaro. This is a whole different, and yes all new, design that looks nothing like the Camaro, so I don't see what your beef is.
BTW, I am not trying to start a flame war or anything, I just do not see or understand your complaint, and I am trying to understand where you are coming from, just out of curiousity.
@pokey6733 I do realize that all companies share similar designs over all their cars, but my point is the Malibu, when it was re-introduced, never was a great car. Only the recent generation has been somewhat better and design wise, it was pretty bland IMO. However now they have this new redesigned one, and although it has similar design cues, they are cues it doesn't deserve. The whole point why the Camaro looks the way it does is because it's a sort of homage to the 60s car.
From what I've seen from this and spy photos it looks like it is going to be a really cool car :) I hated chevrolet a few years ago and now they are one of my favourite brands. I love the new line up
