This is Chopin played sadly and I'm not referring to the emotional impact of this brilliant waltz. This plods and drags and completely lacks any subtly. Its harsh as hell in parts too.
i actually find the starting tempo very fitting for the song...other songs seem to fast, and even if it was originally meant to be played faster than this, this was the pianist's interpretation, and I dreally enjoyed it.
Just for the record, Chopin does indicate 60 measures per minute at the start of the piece, which is much faster than this. However, I do enjoy the song much more at this slower tempo, and find it more appropriate.
I have to agree with nancyrocks410. I am currently learning this piece for a recital, and it clearly states Lento at the beginning of the piece so all that have complained this performance is too slow are in error. A true musician can put appropriate and emotional interpretations onto a piece while still maintaining the essence that the composer intended. That is exactly what this performer has done, and I commend him for it.
non c'est pas to slow. C'est pas parce que c'est une valse qu'elle doit être rapide. D'ailleurs sur les partitions c'est écrit largo...Trop vite ça enlèverait la mélancolie et le passionnel typique de chopin
Beautiful!! but your maltreated cuticles are betraying your breathy bravado in the first half by causing to much wind resistance and therefore milli seconds behind the tempo. But your ashen sombre delivery in the second half is a lack luster farce. you should be ashamed of yourself.
Would anyone care to tell me why youtube is under the impression that all romantic must be played slowly with rubato? If you play at anything over lento you "don't interpret the pice correctly." Funny, I would think someone who plays a more staedy, live tempo of Chopin, say Horowitz, one of the greatest pianist of all time who studied chopin tediously would know a bit more about expressing music than amateurs on the internet do. Some works are to be slow, others, such as this, are not to be.
@BrianInCminor: I can't help but agree with you on this one. I genuinely can't stand abuse of rubato in pieces, especially ones so beautiful as this. Also, the overly heavy-handedness of this particular pianist is starting to grate after 2 minutes.
@BrianInCminor If you look at ANY copy of this piece of music, it will say over in the top left "Lento". Therefore, the beginning is, in fact, slow. Do not insult this pianist. I strongly doubt you could do any better. You have compared an amateur to a professional, i.e., Horowitz. Not all of us are prodigies in piano, and something tells me, neither are you. When you can play it exactly as Chopin himself did, then come back and insult.
apart from the excessively slow tempo, the main problem with this performance is that since you emphasize the third rather than the first beat, your waltz becomes a mazurka. now you have to ask yourself: if Chopin had wanted to write a mazurka, wouldn't he have done so?
although the calando is conceivable as a diminuendo it should be a ritardando in the fractional initial shading. all in all, the lifting note on the second eighth and F is a great non legato agitato.
am i right or what? just kidding, i mixed that up from editor notes on pathetique by beethoven.
I love this version. the author clearly indicates slow in the first part of the work and then picking up speed going, I've heard other versions that starts very fast and thus can not appreciate the work that is very beautiful.
Why do you all think everything is meant to be played exactly as the composer said?? I really love this slower version and this is how I prefer to play it, myself!
Until you play the Pathetique Sonata, a whole collection of Fugues and Preludes from the Well-Tempered Klavier, and a few Nocturnes by Chopin at age 11, then maybe one of us will be impressed. Sorry. But that's how it works, kiddo.

yes.. i played the Pathetique Sonata a few months. and a nocturne and a chopin prelude abd i dont know what the hell a well-tempered klavier is-,-;;; and ive only played piano for 3 and a half years
I agree, that this is way closer to "Lento" than most play it. I also think that, when played faster, it is next to impossible to put the correct amount of emotion into it.

trust me it does ofcourse you need to study it but it just comes out specially when memorizing it i just did that in mozart k 332 first mov. sonata i love it and i learnd it really fast but it alsow deppends like for example im learning now impromtu op. 90 n.2 schubert itt is hell because of the speed so it depends on the recording if its to fast it really hard speciallyy in impromptu's and studies but its really good help..good luck :D

This is a pretty good, version but there are a couple of things you could improve on.
In the second section, make it nostalgically light-hearted. There's no clear tone or tempo change. Also your keystrokes sound a bit heavy.
But overall, pretty good.

I think that means "double sharp." If it's an F, it's 2 half steps above it- so it'd be a G.

the x is a double sharp. so go up two half steps. from f to f sharp and another half step, G.
