Yes JJ Abrams was inspired by Godzilla and the monsters he fought and yes he was inspired by the blair witch project BUT the monster (Clover) itself is definitely original. A new idea, a new monster creation. Clover could kick Godzilla's ass. Dunno about kicking Cthulhu's ass though, that would be a good fight.

Why is everyone ranting and raving about a monster movie? They're basically the same thing over and over. A giant Godzilla-like creature comes out and start wreaking havoc, people either figure out how to defeat it or survive throughout the movie. That's it. Why do we want our "own" monster, implying that if the Japanese have one, we gotta have one? We're Americans (well those fortunate), we're better than Japanese people. We don't need to copy them, they copy us.
