Love this! Thanks. Years ago on a vaction in France we could not really afford we met up with another couple from the US. The(rich)guy in this couple turned out to be the most obnoxious person I've ever known. I angrily ended our "shared" vacation plans. Got into our rental car and sped away.
Turned on the radio and the first thing I heard was a French DJ announcing this
song. Perfect for the moment...and a lasting memory.
Isnt it amazing how this song made it into the secular world of radio---it was just that bad! Also, the piano riff at the opening is one of the best and most recognizable ever. Nothing compares to this version-live or otherwise.
I cannot listen to this without becoming overcome by the Spirit, nor can I stop myself from weeping as I let the words, the music, and the fervor wash over me.
What a magic moment was captured when they recorded this blessing to us all.
Forty years old this New Year.
God Bless Edwin Hawkins, his singers that day, and each and every one of us that have been uplifted from our daily toil by listening to these magic words and music into that Holy Place.
Our local radio station (years ago) used to begin each day at midnight with this song. I used to risk my mom's wrath (we had a strict bedtime) to sneak a listen to this as often as I could. It turned out that she knew about it (of course) and called the DJ to find out who sang it, and that Christmas the album was under the tree. I've still got it.
This is the best recording of this song, imho. God bless...
We can show our children what REAL music once sounded like. They certainly don't have a reference point now--there are a few acts, even in this genre, who are the exception to this: Mary Mary, CeCe Winans, Donnie McClurkin quickly come to mind.
This should be the first clip on the list. This is actually the Northern California COGIC Choir which was made up of all the COGIC in Northern California. The lead singer is Dorothy Combs.
Please post some of the other songs on that album. Mostly everybody in that Northern California COGIC Choir is over 60 years old now. Hearing the recording bring back old memories. Thanks for posting it. Do you have any of Bishop E. E. Clevelands sermons?

I love it.
The Edwin Hawkins Singers version is much better than that boring one in Sister Act.

Fabulous! Remember it as a little girl, just before I started school. It was all over the radio waves in England.

Still brings me to my knees! What a powerful voice in Dorothy Combs; God sang THROUGH her when they recorded this classic! Praise God!

One of my favorite gospel songs. I love the old choir, simple production songs.
