I guess you had to be there. It was like 60 feet tall, and it would surge up to twice that high. It was HOT and spinning- and oddly, loud.

And sadly, you're right- the guy at the end didnt make it. He was a tourist who was at Makapuu which is a beach break- and it totally pounds. I'm a strong swimmer and it has trashed me before and I was lucky to hit sand, not jagged volcanic glass.

@cameraperson One question? How long ago was that accident? I know Makapu'u and how hard it pounds. lol...Yes, I've had a few surfers tell me how bad they wiped out. ;-P The lava rocks are as sharp as glass and it will shredd you! I lived about 10 minutes around the bend from this beach.

I shot that back in spring 1998 while working for KGMB9. I lived in Makiki heights on keeaumoku not far from tantalus. It was a great time to be there!

I wouldnt surf Makapuu and I'd stay away from sunset and pipeline. They are shredders. And the kids riding pounders under the lip - they're crazy!!!
