I'm an atheist, and I'm not a big fan of Christianity (or any other religion for that matter), but Christianity as practiced by most christians is NOT a cult. cult-LIKE, but not a cult.. Not as we know and use the word today at least..

Anything outside of the established cultural religion is now considered a cult. Judism, Christianity, and the Islamic faith all worship the same God. They differ in their own unique dogma. Early Christianity was a "cult" in the eyes of Judism. Preaching fear of others is a method of control. Speaking out against others is a way to elevate yourself in the eyes of your peers. Every "culture" develops a major form of religion. Majority rules. Christmas is a "cultural" holiday in America and Europe mainly due to the long popularity of the Christian religion. Present day Christmas traditions are blended with the original Pagan holiday that included the custom of bringing a tree into the home. Christ's birthday was standardized to fall on the older Pagan holiday. Basically "cults" fighting for supremacy.

Jude 11 gives 3 identifing marks of a cult.

1) They go in the way of Cain. Cain offered worship that was contrary to God's will. Whe Cain's offering wasn't accepted and Abel's was Cain murdered his brother Abel. Gen4:2-9. 2) They follow after the way of Balaam. Greed for wealth and pollution of God's word through pagan influence Num22 & 25:1,2 3) They possess the rebellious spirit of Korah who defied God's authority. Num 16

It seems to me that definition 2 describes radical sects of Christianity, which would not necessarily be a cult under definition 3. I would also suspect 4 to be those which fall under both 2 and 3.

1 is probably the truest meaning of a cult, but due to those under definition 3, the word cult now has negative connotations.

Technically having similar characteristics of a cult, all religions are based on a belief system (faith) in which a higher power (God) tells you who, what, where, when, and how to do (or not) to do certain things. What about WHY? Eternal damnation, of course.

@CultFree Christianity is the biggest cult in the world. Anytime you teach that you have the "way to truth and salvation" and that people need to worship a deity - cult. Jesus, God, and the bible are fictitious stories taught as truth with no verifiable testable claims and they make a lot of money. The money may go toward the church or in the pockets of the parishioners. Even if it goes to feed the hungry its still earned by a cult. Cult is not bad or good per se, just delusional clubs.

@CultFree cults usually recruit and hold different views from the norm. Sounds familiar. If you make a claim that your group has knowledge that is divine and you cant prove what that means. Your group is probably a cult. Cults usually consider testimony has evidence. Cults also tend 2 focus on shedding this world's possessions and enlightenment. Religion and cult are synonyms.
