I'm an ex virgin records employee and I am in the movie credits as part of make-up artistry. It's rare to hear live performances in movies, so these are all dubbed. During filming, Valerie Pettiford (mother), sang live to the audience but Mary-ann tatum dubbed the scene with her studio version of the song. The little girl sang live as well, and was dubbed with a pitch altered version of Mary-ann's interpretation.

The little girl once again is not Mariah altered, it's Mary ann altered to show parallels to the voice of the mom, it's complicated hope u all understand.

During the live shooting Valerie Pettiford (mother) and actress that does the girl did sing live to the audience, but voices didn't make cut in post production. Mariah didn't sing because the mother is not supposed to sound like Mariah, and the girl is supposed to parallel the mom's voice .

If you're a dork like me and actaully bought and liked the movie and was even dorkier to watch the commentary, the director says that Mariah's voice was digitally altered to sound childish for the first song and he also said in the movie when MC performed, for legal reasons she had someone else sing the songs that sounded just like her so that's not her singing. She's only on the soundtrack.

She didn't want them to be able to recognize her voice on the songs (which actually ended up happening)!
