The GOP has often taken anti-science positions or attempted to distort science for ideological purposes. For them to try to "own" this issue is an outrage. We can point to the GOP's history of promoting creationism in the schools.

As for NASA, Google Dean Acosta or George C. Deutsch; or check out reports on the squelching of Dr. Hansen by Bush appointees.

The overall federal budget is over $3 trillion, or 3,000 billion, dollars. NASA's $17 billion or so is just over a HALF A PERCENT of federal spending.

A majority of all federal spending ALREADY goes to income transfer, welfare-state programs, especially for the elderly (who are the wealthiest age group and yet vote themselves lots of OUR money). The bottomless pit of welfare spending would never notice if you gave them all of NASA's money.

It is not about space, It's about the infrastructure that is dependent on space dollars. From the rockets,to the toilet paper the employees need to wipe their ass. Billions of Dollars and thousands of jobs. Killing the space program could put money to better use. Would probably go into some PORK program. But the end result, too many lost jobs. The machine is running and it would creat too much damage to shut off. Its not space exploration any more. It's about keeping money in peoples pockets.

It would be nice if there were replacements for the shuttle. We need a spacecraft that is safe, cheaper and reliable and could be launched on a short notice, that could be capable of carrying astronauts to repair satellites & space stations, rescue missions, (if need be retrieved satellites or astronauts). It would be nice to keep/have the ability to carry and retrieve large satellites like the KH-12.
