Hey joe question(s) im thinking about switching drum heads which is more durable and more resonant evans or remo and what is the best combination with either one
@Ludwigzildjian1 Well a basketball when you push on it, it's very tight and doesn't give like a soccer ball. A Soccer ball gives when you push on it. The same should be done with the top and bottom of your snare heads. Hope that's clearer. Thanks for watching. Keep Rockin' JOEDRUMS2112
Joe i need some help here. I got my snare with the Pearl Forum series since I am a new drummer. The snare is a little echoey and it won't go away however i tune it. Should i buy a new snare (JoeyJordison's Signature Snare) or can i fix this somehow?.
@ZePerfectionist I would still use your snare don't buy a new one just yet. Try dampening the drum around the inside of the rim with a REMO product called REMO O's, it's a plastic ring that fits on top of your batter head to stop the overtones. Hope that helps Any other questions let me know. OK? Keep Rockin' JOEDRUMS2112
Mr. Joe, I read somewhere that John Bonham used to tighten the resonant head way more than the batter head. I tried this and it helped alot. It also stopped the snare ringing when i hit the toms.
just a tip get a 9 volt dewalt to speed things up...lol it works it really does and it will have tourque settings to get you almost tuned perfect then just a few twists by hand and your good.
@themightyrm The snares rattle for a couple of reasons, try and turn the strainer knob clockwise till they stop rattling. If that doesn't do it, then try readjusting the strainer and the snares by taking the snares totally off of the strainer and then putting them back on making sure the strainer is loose before tightening the snare strainer, then make sure the snares are firmly on the head before locking them down. Then readjust the strainer knob one more time, and it should be fine. Good Luck
@themightyrm One other thing you can do is take two small slits of paper and insert them between the wires and the heads at the edges of the wires near the clips. Careful with this though, as if you put the pieces of paper too close to the center of the head, you will lose the snare sound.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX i do that (except i used a piece of cloth) and it makes my snare sound great. then i tried i piece of paper and some polyester strips but they keep falling out :(
@CommanderDaz Yea unfortunately that can happen due to paper's light weight. As long as you get something in between those edges and the head though, your set!
@TheAceOfTheCase The Snare Drum I have is the DW 14"x 6.5" Collector's Edition. It's all Maple shell. It runs about $550.00 It's one of my favorites. Thanks for watching. Keep Rockin' JOEDRUMS Happy New Year...
Hey joe i recently got a 6 lug 4x10 pearl m80 snare drum. And i'm having a problem tuning it. Every time I try to tune the resonant, the head stays wrinkled and loose by the opening where the snares go through and cannot get good sound because of it. Do you have to tune smaller drums different ways? What should i do?
@levitucusninja7 Start by making the bottom lugs all finger tight so that they start evenly, then make sure each lug gets turned the same about from one to another. Start with one lug and turn it one full turn, then go to the direct opposite lug, and give it one full turn. Then do the other lugs the same way till you come back around to the first lug you started on. Then go around the whole drum a second time till all the wrinkles are out of the head. Any ???s let me know. JOEDRUMS

@mattiethedrummer616 Well I don't have a meter that I can tell the tension, But if you think of a soccer ball and how it gives a little, it's not too tight or loose. That's the tension I have all my snare drums tuned to. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. Keep Rockin' JOEDRUMS

i cannot get this head to sound good.i would like it to sound like yours and have a lot of crack.if i hit it really light i get no snare sound.should i loosen it..right now the sound is very open.how can i get it to sound like yours.
Start over with your lugs loosened up all the way top and bottom. The snares should be off. Finger tighten each of the lugs, top and bottom. Start with the bottom head. Tighten each lug till the head starts to feel like the tightness of soccer ball. The top head should feel like the tightness of a basket ball. The snares should be on the bottom head so they barley touch but without too much buzz. Turn the snare knob till the snares stop buzzing. That's it. JOEDRUMS
Yea the ring is caused from the overtones of the head. You either have the snares to tight against the bottom head or the top head is too tight. I would start by making the snares looser, you only want them against the head enough till the bussing goes away, if you have them too tight it will cause this extra ringtone sound.
If that's not the problem you can tape some paper towel to your head. Fold a square of paper towel; not too thick, not too thin, then get some heavy duty tape and put it the square about the 12 O Clock position on your snare, and tape the paper towel to the head, and it should dampen the ring sound coming from the top head. Hope that helps.
Yea it just depends on the type the drum heads you use on the DW's. The Clear Heads will give you more power, and the coated will have more tone and more of a authentic classic rock sound. Hope that helps.
hey nice video, i just got new snare heads. I plan to replace both the bottom and top heads. I just wanted to know, how hard is it to put the snare wire back on, once Ive finished tuning the bottom head. And how do you tune your bottom head, higher, the same or lower then your top. Also do you recommend tuning the top head (mute the bottom) to a good tone i like and then messing around with the bottom, until i like the sound? Thanks
I will put my other video on YOUTUBE soon so look for it. It's about the snare drum heads top and bottom and also I talk about the snares too. It's not too hard to put the snares back on at all.
