I happened to be at this show. I was visiting a friend in Austin and we came down for the afternoon. (I actually thought their name was "Shoewater" at first.) Very good. Unfortunately, some heavy metal band on the next stage over started playing before Shear's set was over and drowned them out. Just heard "Whipping Boy" on a local college station in Cleveland. Renewed my interest.
Isn't it a crime that songs and bands like this are not heard on the radio. In fact, having seen this band and other great bands equally not well known I find I can hardly listen to music on the radio any longer!
The problem nowadays is that bands with better producers and managers become famous. So you've got to dig it deep to find an amazing band like this one. And yes, I thinks it's a crime =)
I think this band have attained cult status among thinking music fans. My daughter and many other fans are also into the lead singer's environmental exploits, paying for recently available documents relating to his travels and research. Now that is real fan worship! None of this would mean much to the likes of Cheryl Cole or Gaga! And Cowell wouldn't be able to see the point of it as it is not commercial!
I wish Jon would sing more with Will in Okkervil River. Their voices are so different that it would create a weird balance in Okkervil River. Jon with his beautiful vibratto and Will with the manic wails.
After hearing this I think I'm going to wet myself with the excitement of knowing their new album comes out next month! I think it just might be the record of 2008.

Absolute perfect, just found them by accident.
There is so much crap on the radio.
They should be more famous indeed and so should be

Sadly, Meiburg is no longer with Okkervil.
He left to concentrate full-time on Shearwater. Much like Sheff left Shearwater to concentrate more on Okkervil.
However, I think Okkervil was at it's best with Meiburg in it and the same probably stands true for Sheff in Shearwater.
Either way, they're both incredible.
