I am currently reading the book and have seen the movie. I have very mixed emotions about this story and how it played out. he traveled into the wild because he got fed up with the materialistic ways of society you would know that just from reading the book.... he was an anthropologist and studied the food crisis and things of that nature!!
It would be wrong to disrespect Chris we should admire his spirit and love for nature. We should also remind young people that Chris errored by going into the wilderness unprepared to live in such a harsh enviroment. He had zero training and was thinking more about the "dream" of Alaska than the reality.Chris made a horrible mistake and it would be wrong to romanticize his decision to go to Alaska ignorant of the terrain.Young people need to learn from this mistake. We dont want tragedy again.
@YukonTruck98 I agree that ALL people should learn from this, but It wasn't a mistake. Thats what he wanted...thats the whole point of his death. Jesus Christ didn't make a mistake for believing in what HE believed. Chris didn't want people to go out and do what he did. He said "happiness is only real when shared". people are inspired by him. They don't want to live his life. As far as his decision being ignorant, again like he said "I'm not destined to live like this, I choose to live this way"
Everyone who disrespects Chris needs to take a long hard look at themselves. Chris lived his dream and even though he died young, he achieved what most today can only dream of.
Chris, our beloved son and brother, died here during his adventurous travels in search of how he could best realize God's great gift of life. His final message, "I have had a happy life and thank the Lord. Goodbye and may God bless all," We commend his soul to the world.
I spent the night in that bus a couple summers ago. We got an awesome fire going in that huge stove - it kept us warm all night.
Cool place, it was a great trip. But I definitely recommend hiking in from the park down the Sushanna. That way you cross the Tek where it's low, and you can walk down the dry riverbed of the Sushanna in the fall (exactly how McCandless could have easily hiked out, by the way, had he known where he was). The Stampede trail itself is lousy - buggy and wet.
he failed to preserve the meat properly, and it spoiled. Rather than thinly slicing and air-drying the meat, like jerky, as is usually done in the Alaskan bush, he smoked it, following the advice of hunters he had met in South Dakota.
Also, if he had pre planned a bit he would have been alright. For example; he should have built his smoker ahead of time, and carried his rifle at all times. When he encountered that first herd it was very cold, flies and other insects would not have been a factor (as they were in mid summer when he shot the moose). Then again, would Chris have wanted to shout and elk, caribou or moose so early on. At that time hunger was not the driving force that it would become just a few months later.
have gotten out of there easily. The reason I don't admire what he did? Forget his parents. Because of the pain he caused his sister, and other lives he touched along the way. What would have been a shining and inspirational existence instead turned into another story of wasted talent and potential. He would have made a difference in the world but chose instead to run away from it. Some people don't have the fortitude or don't like confrontation. It all boils down to how we're wired I guess.
Folks, did you ever stop and realize that he was on a suicide mission? I admire everything he believed and did, UNTIL he decided on suicide. Why do I suspect this? 1-No evidence of poisoning was ever found in his autopsy. 2-He was in the area during spring and summer. Plenty of game to hunt. 3-He had a fishing pole and net and a stream behind the bus that was FULL of fish. It should have never come down to the SAD conclusion, UNLESS his plan was to kill himself. If he really wanted to, he could
The problem wasn't all the animals around, the problem was the berries he ate inhibited digestion. So shut the fuck up get your facts straight before saying taht he tried to escape by commiting suicide.
Easy there Parrot Face, don't blow a gasket. No evidence of the berries were found in his autopsy, no alkaloids or other poisoning agents. Besides, why was he eating berries to begin with? Plenty of fish and game. Some parts of the movie aren't accurate, like that plant guide he "had". At least that's what I read about his experience. Okay, dipshit?
There are several theories about how he died, none of them have really been proven yet. The berry one is just the one that I think. There is however, no evidence that he commited suicide. He was not incompetent, he was able to survive 113 days out there, and he based on his writings he was obviously trying to stay alive, not end his life. Okay, dipshit?
I read the book and it said that he at a wild potato at some point which, at that time of the year it was not fully matured and was toxic to humans. In his diary it say something like "fault of the pot. seed" That at least seems like a probably theory in my book that he ate a potato that was toxic at the time. I def. do not believe he killed himself, and I don't think this is a matter of lack of knowledge, many scientists didn't even know that particular plant was toxic at certain times.
i just did his biography and i have seen the movie and read the book and he was a very good and humble person from what I learned. I some day want to go to the bus. he was and still is one of the most courages person I know.
Aside from his parents, I feel sorriest for the old man, he was so deeply touched by this McCandless. So sad for him, I hope he didn't stay that sad for long.
yeah that bothered me too. i wondered why is he so dependent on what chris thinks/ believes? the old man seemed to base his success in life after what he saw as chris; success in life. so much so that when chris dies he stops believing. i dunno, confusing book/ theme.
we are all different than chris/ each other in some way so (big or small) we should all realize and account for that.
What I'm really curious about as well is the old man ,Ron. In the movie they became so close and it was heartbreaking to see that old man so sad because of Chris leaving.....I wonder how he must've felt hearing the news that Chris was found starved to death.. Chris not only followed his dream and ultimate challenge, but also "woke up" other people he met on his journey, changing their lives practically.... R.I.P chris, may your journey still continue till this day..

Me wanting to hate him is reason enough for me to hate him. I retain my freedom to hate anything I want to hate. You sir are the asshole ,and that is why I hate you too.
Was about to say he was arrogant but then realized he DID bring sufficient supplies and never wanted publicity. Had the creek not flooded over chances are he would've gotten home alive..but I still hate him
There was a hand operated tram less than a quarter of a mile away. He should've at least had a map. While I think the man had one of the greatest spirits...I think he was selfish as well, and only in the end did he realize he was selfish.
to many people are to opinionated. I do not believe in any way that he was arrogant, and anyone who does needs to give a real good example. He did what he believed and wanted to live peacfully and happy. If you disagree with what he believed in, thats one thing, but he was not in the least bit arrogant. I personally was inspired by his story and hope to do something like he did. I respect him for following what he believed in and carrying out. To many people these days wont do that.
In my opinion he wasn't arrogant. I like part of his philosophy, freedom and a sense of adventure. I plan to ride a motorbike across the US for three months soon. I have done careful planning though. I would describe his approach to adventure as reckless and immature. I also think he is selfish because he totally disregarded the feelings of his family.
Yes it's always about everyones feelings is it not hahaha. Maybe his family disregarded his feelings when they talked to him and made him choose between living with what parents a popularity contest. Maybe they ripped him apart inside and his sister by fighting and denying stuff to them. People can only be hurt for so long before they do something and he had just about enough of it can you blame him for wanting to go out there. Maybe he planned on never coming out alive you think of that?
how was he arrogant? He left in search of true happiness. He didnt ask for anything and didnt try and gt famous and didnt tell anyone. Like to see you amount to anything in your life let alone leave all the comforts of home.
in the book john krakauer said that there was little footage left of chris but i cant find it. im also fourteen and loved the book and movie. Chris's death was a tragedy and almost completely ineluctable. R.I.P.
Has anyone been to the bus recently?? I hope people haven't thrashed it...
"There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society where none intrudes, By the sea and the music in its roar; I love not man less, but Nature more." -Lord Byron
I bet only the people who were inspired by the movie, the book, McCandless himself go out to find this bus - the people who'd never trash something as meaningful as this
So few in life really follow their dream, resorting only to "Could'uv, Would'uv, Should'uv" in their old age. McCandless had the balls to go for it. I'm 67 and have a lot of respect for this young man. The folks who call him an "idiot" and other things are a self richeous bunch. doug
really..how can u say that? he was a great person. he had a dream that took courage that he followed. obviously u dont listen to eddie vedder, or u would not feel that way about chris. alaska IS the place to test yourself. if u ask me ur the real idiot and ur ignorant as hell
the guy had a dream! and dreams can take you away from reality in a way that few people can understand. we can all dream, and make our dreams come true. why discart the possibility of alaska? it was alaska, but could be anywhere else. we wanted to test the wild, face something "impossible". and he made it. death is not the end of the journey. it's only sad for those who "stay", and love him. of course dreaming means innocence, but what's wrong with that?
I can relate to his quest for meaning in life, I can relate for his quest to live in the wild. Sadly though his death was as a result of his ignorance. He could have easily spent some time learning what it took to survive up there. sadly he didn't do so. RIP.
Chris McCandless wasn't an idiot. He knew what was coming. He viewed life differently from everyone else. He didn't want to live out his life; he wanted to see life.
Sometimes people say things in a facetios manner to draw attention to misunderstanding.. and to lighten things up, a bit of humour etc. It doesn't mean we're all idiots, but then again, it probably does. Our thumbs according to certain religious sects are the seat of the Soul.haha !!
Perhaps it is just not possible to understand what some people are trying to get across without resorting to swearing or anger or venom thumbs up folks
Over a million hikers, adventurers, sportsmen, artists, and soul seekers go to Alaska each year for the same draw that lured McCandless. And 500 of them a year never make it back.So where's their enshrined "magic bus?"Where's their storyWhere's your yearning to know THEM better?Might not one be even more deserved than he?And yet, I am not hearing of one of them. And won't,until a movie is made of them down the road, distorted to make a nice 120minute story. So you can pile on and pretend to relate.
And it´s interesting to see negative remarks over warnings such as : you have to eat or you´l die starving, being carefull with mushroom picking and wild plant eating... even the most inteligent people forgets that human is a body also.
could you be any more bitter? EVERY story is "worthy" of being told - got a bitch about this one being one of them? than start writing the other 100s of them - give them their magic bus, if you have the balls to, instead of crapping on the hearts and mids of those that either DO relate or long to - that is what we are all actually HERE for - to inspire and be inspired. lighten up the judgement, baby!
Vividgirl, you say,"Stop trying to figure out his motives or what his plans were...Maybe this was Chris' duty" -I ask if not for his motives or plan, what is the interest in him at all? Or again I say it's not him, it's the perception of him prtrayed through hollywood. Maybe he has become someone bigger than himself. I can undserstand that, it just bothers me that we deify this guy over a friggin Hollywood induced moneygrab. Where were the believers ten years ago?!?
Ah sweet mystery of life at last I've found you..Stop making sense in a world that is senseless.Duty to whom ... God, country, family, self? Who cares?Oh well..life goes on..indifference gets to breathe again..
True Wally...history is full of bull(Ego),take overs, take outs,self-interest& reality shows. Can't change the past, only live in the present as the future can be predicted by stupidity.Love the closest to us in the gene pool&never make mistakes like Alexander the not so great.Learn from lessons or suffer for them.Judge only from our limited perception of the meanderings of a Fool.Feel the sad&maddening waste of human life to the core of our vulnerable selves.
Well written Anji, I appeciate it.And in theory it's beautiful. But in reality, I don't see it. This guy hurt most those that loved him truest. Mother, sister, father. And he served nobody but himself. He touched all of those lives along his way, then deserted them all for self. It was always about McCandless. Why bring the camera? Why the journal? It was about him and his actions. The rest of the world be damned. Society after all, was sick, right? You can't flee what you hope to heal.
Stop trying to figure out his motives or what his plans were. He wanted to figure things our for himself and did it his way. What about the men & women serving our country? They know what could happen but they do it, why? Because they feel it is their duty. Maybe this was Chris' duty.
And if you care so much about how his family feels, stop the negative speculation about their son.
I mean, he KNEW about the Stampeded Trail. It's the damned Stampede Trail! It has a name. It's on maps. It was a hiked trail. He knew about the Bus on the trail. It was common knowledge to people in the area, and to hikers and hunters far beyond that. It was on maps! It was INTEDED to be a shelter. How is that retreating to total isolation in the WILD to kill one's social self, or whatever he referred to it as? It's all so stupid and half-assed. Go further. Build a cabin. A Bus?!?!
What he did more-or-less was isolation. He encountered nearly nobody else when he was out there because of how far out it was. Sure it was common knowledge to locals, but how many of those were there who would hike all the way down to the bus and stay there during the time he did? If he had just wandered aimlessly into the wild, he would of never been able to return to civilization. He wanted to go back after several months, so if he just merely wandered out, he never could.
Chris McCandless..humanitarian,fixed in thought&purpose, highon Nature& the written word, sent the wheels of Truth stampeding along the trail.Privilege&wealth made living in a world where people starve(not only in body but in the heart&soul)unable to be reconcilled.Impersonal friend to all with a finely honed sense of integrity, he was unable to spark change in the human soul..without compassion we are all empty, leading futile lives.Martyrs are everywhere and who is closer to God...than The Fool
Question: Who dreams for years of living in the complete wilds of Alaska. Gives up all of his earthly possessions and disowns his own family to do so. Travels all the way across the country, much of it by thumb. Intentionally avoids over packing, taking too much food, or in any other way, cheating himself of the "experience." And then settles down in IN A BUS SHELTER ON A WELL KNOWN HUNTING ROAD? Silly right?
He followed a trail ( the Stampede Trail) and about 25 miles down the trail he discovered the bus. It had been left there by a mining operation from the early 60's.
Ahh...I wish it would be easy enough to just walk into that bus as McCandless did and take it over.Live his life out for him.He was a hero far beyond words...
That bus was left by Yutan Construction in 1963 when construction on roads was stopped there after 50m of roads were built. Chris McCandless was a brave guy. He could have done things better though. A tram was 1/4 mile away that came by fairly regularly and cabins w/ supplies 2 miles away. A compass and a map could have saved his life. :(
but the whole point was to live a lone with out a map and with out a compass i have so much respect for him but he died horibly and im sad he dident reserch the thing he ate a little more but its ok much respect to him
Actually, if he wanted to completely disconnect, why wear machine-made clothes, boots, etc. Why bring a gun? Why accept man-made food? It sounds like he really wanted to live life as raw and basic as he could. So why not learn to hunt, learn to survive, get your body detoxed from living in civilization for most of your life? What he did is commendable, but it was also hasty and short-sighted.
I think he only planned to be in Alaska for a few months - not years and years. I do see what you're saying though - but I also here it's damned near impossible to live out there without eating lots of meat and wearing furs. He probably just wanted to go that immediate winter to Alaska and didn't want to waste lots of time learning shit when there are easier options. It's okay to take good things from society - like that gear. He probably wanted detox from the mean/ass-y population.
he only wanted to be there until august or september i guess. in the book krakauer writes that he wanted to be back in fall. you should read the book :)
i read the book....back in the 60's some group left it there because there was contruction to extend the stampede trail. the construction was cancelled. 2 busses were removed and one was left for shelter for hunters
Most people are too lazy and too chicken to do what Mr. McCandless did. If I lived near I'm sure I'd go and LOOK. But I think people should just leave the spot alone as much as possible and go make their own adventures.
Thank for posting this clip and thanks for a big description on your title. it's pretty ineresting to see things like this when i can not go there myself. Thanks again Bud!
it's sad that people takes thing. ever heard of something called sharing. everyone should be allowed to see everything that was left. people should not take pieces of the bus etc. as something to remember. take photos/ film the place but dont take what isn't yours.
I know, I know... believe me I wish I had. When I filmed this (a year and a half ago) I never planned on posting it anywhere. Heck, I don't think I'd even heard of YouTube. However, I did take a bunch of photos. I've been working on compiling a complete "movie" that will showcase all the photos, videos, a sketch from my trip out there... all that, with commentary. Keep an eye out for it.
The movie was awesome... I think if we all loosened up and took a quite time we would find the meaning of life, and even more importantly if we are searching hard enough, like "Alex" we will find God and his love.
for sure, if we make some graffity, I don't think thy will be any trace of our hero. magic bus.I just think this bus is bless by him today. if I go there, I think I fell good. Just thak I won't bring anything, and won't degrade anything.
Sad the movie about this item will turn the faraway place this once was to history. Due to the movie, all kinds of idiots will try to show up and get there, leaving a lot of shit behind and f**** up the place. Bloody tourists !
Well, some time ago there was even an idiot walking out there with a 5pound bag of rice wich wanted to experience the true Chris experience. After a couple of days, encountering a bear, he decided to get back to civilisation.
Oh brother. MelbourneMandy... "Civilisation" is the European spelling of the word. Both are correct, although considering the root of the word is the Latin "civilis", I think one may be more accurate than the other. I'll leave it to you to figure out which one...
I have no opposition to anyone visiting the bus. Hell, I would do it if I had the time and money. As long as you don't disturb or remove anything, you're merely paying homage to Chris. Nothing wrong with that. He wouldn't be offended.

as you have seen in my other posts, i am going to vandalize the bus and tear up that bible on camera. :) stay tuned and subscribe to see my extreme stunt.
k man please tell me ur joking! that would be VERY, VERY! disrespectful to the family, if you go there, which i have nothing against, leave EVERYTHING be!! please for everyone
everyone can go into the bus if he wishes! don't think that SUpertramp is going to be angry, just because someone is passioned by his story! he wrote everything up, so he wanted somebody to know his story and see his bus, cause it's the most important off his story!
I just watched the film, "into the wild" I haven't been impressed by a film in a long time. now I find that everyone is wondering up there for morbid curiosity.....I hope McCandless found what he was looking for.
I think people who go there for curiosity's sake or as some sort of pilgrimage has missed the point Chris probably wanted us to get: you have to go out and find your own bit of wild. Don't go where everybody else has gone!
Read the book, enjoy the movie and let's leave it at that!! I have read that items have been removed and sold on ebay and this disgusts me. In my opinion the individuals who have done this have desecrated a place that should be shown the utmost respect, a place were a man died. They should be ashamed.
I agree, but as if it was the family that took it, I think it's okay. However, selling it on Ebay...naw, that's not cool. I just thought it was amazing that they went back to the bus about a year later and everything was still there.
he like nature suck when alone..... river overflowin.......fuck!!!........dead

he failed to preserve the meat properly, and it spoiled. Rather than thinly slicing and air-drying the meat, like jerky, as is usually done in the Alaskan bush, he smoked it, following the advice of hunters he had met in South Dakota.

lmao you ripped that right off of wikipedia
heyjohnwhatsmyname 2 years ago

It all boils down to how we're wired I guess.
gekko1323 2 years ago
Folks, did you ever stop and realize that he was on a suicide mission? I admire everything he believed and did, UNTIL he decided on suicide. Why do I suspect this? 1-No evidence of poisoning was ever found in his autopsy. 2-He was in the area during spring and summer. Plenty of game to hunt. 3-He had a fishing pole and net and a stream behind the bus that was FULL of fish. It should have never come down to the SAD conclusion, UNLESS his plan was to kill himself. If he really wanted to, he could
gekko1323 2 years ago
The problem wasn't all the animals around, the problem was the berries he ate inhibited digestion. So shut the fuck up get your facts straight before saying taht he tried to escape by commiting suicide.
Yag44 2 years ago
Easy there Parrot Face, don't blow a gasket. No evidence of the berries were found in his autopsy, no alkaloids or other poisoning agents. Besides, why was he eating berries to begin with? Plenty of fish and game. Some parts of the movie aren't accurate, like that plant guide he "had". At least that's what I read about his experience. Okay, dipshit?
gekko1323 2 years ago
There are several theories about how he died, none of them have really been proven yet. The berry one is just the one that I think. There is however, no evidence that he commited suicide. He was not incompetent, he was able to survive 113 days out there, and he based on his writings he was obviously trying to stay alive, not end his life. Okay, dipshit?
Yag44 2 years ago
I read the book and it said that he at a wild potato at some point which, at that time of the year it was not fully matured and was toxic to humans. In his diary it say something like "fault of the pot. seed" That at least seems like a probably theory in my book that he ate a potato that was toxic at the time. I def. do not believe he killed himself, and I don't think this is a matter of lack of knowledge, many scientists didn't even know that particular plant was toxic at certain times.

Aside from his parents, I feel sorriest for the old man, he was so deeply touched by this McCandless. So sad for him, I hope he didn't stay that sad for long.
skylur44 2 years ago 2
yeah that bothered me too. i wondered why is he so dependent on what chris thinks/ believes? the old man seemed to base his success in life after what he saw as chris; success in life. so much so that when chris dies he stops believing. i dunno, confusing book/ theme.
we are all different than chris/ each other in some way so (big or small) we should all realize and account for that.
outcold252 2 years ago
What I'm really curious about as well is the old man ,Ron. In the movie they became so close and it was heartbreaking to see that old man so sad because of Chris leaving.....I wonder how he must've felt hearing the news that Chris was found starved to death.. Chris not only followed his dream and ultimate challenge, but also "woke up" other people he met on his journey, changing their lives practically.... R.I.P chris, may your journey still continue till this day..

to many people are to opinionated. To many people these days wont do that.
gvyankee1991 3 years ago 4

Over a million hikers, adventurers, sportsmen, artists, and soul seekers go to Alaska each year for the same draw that lured McCandless. And 500 of them a year never make it back.So where's their enshrined "magic bus?"Where's their storyWhere's your yearning to know THEM better?Might not one be even more deserved than he?And yet, I am not hearing of one of them. And won't,until a movie is made of them down the road, distorted to make a nice 120minute story. So you can pile on and pretend to relate.

Vividgirl, you say,"Stop trying to figure out his motives or what his plans were...Maybe this was Chris' duty" -I ask if not for his motives or plan, what is the interest in him at all? Or again I say it's not him, it's the perception of him prtrayed through hollywood. Maybe he has become someone bigger than himself. anji1956 3 years ago
You can't flee what you hope to heal.
wallysniper 3 years ago

A Bus?!?!
wallysniper 3 years ago
What he did more-or-less was isolation. He encountered nearly nobody else when he was out there because of how far out it was. Sure it was common knowledge to locals, but how many of those were there who would hike all the way down to the bus and stay there during the time he did? If he had just wandered aimlessly into the wild, he would of never been able to return to civilization. He wanted to go back after several months, so if he just merely wandered out, he never could.

That bus was left by Yutan Construction in 1963 when construction on roads was stopped there after 50m of roads were built. Chris McCandless was a brave guy. He could have done things better though. A tram was 1/4 mile away that came by fairly regularly and cabins w/ supplies 2 miles away. A compass and a map could have saved his life. :(

What he did is commendable, but it was also hasty and short-sighted.
heyimhim 3 years ago
I think he only planned to be in Alaska for a few months - not years and years. I do see what you're saying though - but I also here it's damned near impossible to live out there without eating lots of meat and wearing furs. He probably just wanted to go that immediate winter to Alaska and didn't want to waste lots of time learning shit when there are easier options. It's okay to take good things from society - like that gear. He probably wanted detox from the mean/ass-y population.
