his perfornance on an America the band concert of this song is what attracted me to Stephen Bishops honey sweet voice for the first time we need more guys like this
Thanks, I love this song. I suppose at least part of this song's personal impact comes from timing - it was played on the radio constantly while I was wandering around the country aimlessly. But I don't even recall what the other songs in the Top 40 were. I only recall this song, which is the song I assoicate with the last of my free-spirited days before settling into a "responsible" life. But it's not just nostalgia. I loved this song the moment I first heard it.
Stephen Bishop is a great pop song craftsman who blends nostalgia and popular culture into his music. A very underrated acoustic guitarist, he incorporates very unusual chord voicings. His fame was over far too early for a songwriter and performer of his skills. The public is fickle, however. I wish him well in all of his future endeavours and I will be watching with close attention.
You know, I still get cord forms like that stuck in my head. More often than not, days at a time and more often weeks at a time. What i liked most was the way he actually SHOWED & EXPLAINED those chord forms and the thoughts at the time. This was deffinately a briallint stroke of genious when this was composed.. Thanks for posting this.
the 80's by far had the best music, i remeber my parents playing various songs from eric clapton, hall & oates, journey, chicago, steven bishop ,etc. those times were truly when music had meaning, todays music is all watered down and saturated that I dont even play the radio for the new music just tuning in for the oldie stations with these types of hits!!! 80's rocks!!
I love this song. And songs prior to it. And songs from the decades after. There are songs being made now that have the same qualities. If you have time, I urge you to have a wonder in itunes (and elsewhere). Don't miss out. A well-wisher, Ian
The Girl that dedicated the song to me never got to hear with me as she was killed 3 days later in an auto accident. Oy maybe we heard it together that night. :-(
I love this song. I just found out he was in Animal House myself. He was the guy sitting on the steps who John Belushi took the guitar from and smashed it. Stephen was friends with the director John Landis. This is a beautiful earthy song. We need more like this today instead of this "so called" music, which is simply NOISE. On and On it is!
@TheSharperWon - LOL! That is freakin hilarious. It really put a knot in my gut watching him destroy that ax, I actually do recognize him from that movie! Thanks.
ALWAYS loved this song. Beautiful tropic sounds. Then I hear the story behind the chords, he sings it, the lyrics are relentless with emotion...and...I just kinda lost it at work... Lucky no one was around. LOL.
Love this video. You know we need this type of music today, badly. Amagine, artist that can sing and actually play their own instruments. I am so happy to see Stephen still out there.
Awesome! Thanks SO much for posting this. Stephen Bishop remains one of my favorites. Truly a great songwriter. This song brings back lots of great memories...

A single I bought when it was released many years ago, and played it over and over.
Beautiful melody and sensitive voice. Thanks for sharing it - thanks for reminding me.
Timeless - still a great song to listen to - not for the nostalgia.

Both this guy and Christopher Cross spelled the death of 'Easy Listening'. Horrible artists! Horrible!

Nice song. I didn't know who did it until I saw the special on Animal House, he was the guitarist from the party scene.
