This movie was sort of like, if you took the atmosphere of M Night Shyamalan movies, the cinematography of an Oliver Stone movie, and the plot of a Scorsese movie and mixed all the BEST parts together.
I remember I was sitting in the cinema with a friend back in 2003, the movie started, after this opening title we were literally shocked. I was sure after the opening title, that we're about to see a masterpiece, and I will cry at the end. And I was right.
This beginning scene is epic. The sheer awe, beauty and sadness of those twin memorial lights reaching the heavens coupled with apocalyptic music really establishes the movie's post-9/11, post-apocalyptic setting without a word said. I have never seen a more viscerally deep beginning to any other movie.
@lejistar not a bad film, I mean it had all the elements great cast, great plot, etc...but it just fell short of "Great Movie." I probably need to see it again, been a long time since I've sat down and watched it...I loved the ending I thought that was executed very well/
i remember when i was a kid coming back from florida Looking at those lights from the twin towers once were standing at the washington bridge ,sad times...now its my time to take my stand in NYC as i grew up on longisland im 18 now.
the two best scenes in this movie are first edward nortons monologue and second the road trip with his father cross the country, that was very moving.
Until a couple of weeks ago, I was pretty much convinced that this would be my all time favorite movie... But having seen "revolutionary road", I have to admit it's even better... Best movie ever... beautiful soundtrack, kept me speachless for hours...
Best movie ever, one of my most favorites. The theme music in the opening titles is just touching! Most underrated film,i can't believe it!I wish i could find this song somewhere!
It is, I have seen this film probably 15 times and every time it gets so much better. Norton is amazing, as always, but the ensemble cast makes it so great
Although I never thought of Spike Lee as a "wannabee" anything, and he's been a great director, for me, since "Do the Right Thing." this film is a towering achievement! Everyone needs, at least an attempt, to empathize, to imagine themselves as having lived differently. Sort of flip side of "It's a Wonderful Life." And, Scorcese has fallen some in my eyes since I've come to examine his penchant for romanticizing his idols, such as Howard Hughes. I find no fault with "Raging Bull," however.
here should be movie on "the lady with the dog"...edward norton will be better than perfect in the role of dimitri gurav...hope someday he might

This movie is great, but as we are speaking about Spike Lee's best movies, we must mention "Malcolm X". I think it's even better than 25th hour.

@Maj0ra Towards the end of 2009, 25th Hour got put on quite a few best of the decade lists. One critic said it was the best film of the decade.
I love it, a truly amazing piece of work.

I use to think of him as a Martin Scorsee wannabee. I think now he is better than Scorsee.
