I don't know. I picked up a jar yesterday at an international market. I kinda like it. Just don't use it like peanut butter and you are okay. A little Vegemite goes a long way.
Vegemite now funds Islam! The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils has pulled off the scam of the century! Kraft now pay funds to the AFIC for Halal certification. Monies gained from this certification go back into building Australian Islamic schools, new mosques and inevitably their Jihad! There is absolutely no justification for this certification as muslims could quite easily determine if Vegemite is Halal or Haram just by reading the ingredients. SHAME ON YOU VEGEMITE
as an american who has eaten vegemite, and has a small jar in her pantry i understand. you cant put heaps on like you would peanut butter. some butter and a light smear is quite nice.. almost like a strong cheese. thats just my take tho.... yeah i have an aussie boyfriend lol
I'm from Wichita, Kansas. Spent two months in Perth in the 1970's. Tried Vegemite on a bet, and loved it. There is a store near me that does international foods in Cincinnati, Ohio that stocks it. There is always three or four jars in my cabinet. The stuff is great on whole wheat bread with cream cheese.
I am American, I have not tried vegemite but i do love some peanut butter and jelly!!! It is good! PP&J sandwiches YUM!. Whats so weird about putting jelly on your peanut butter sandwiches?
Well for one, in Australia, we call jelly "jam" and what you call jell-o, we call jelly so to us, it sounds like you are whipping some 'jell-o' onto a sanger (sandwich) with pb.
Psh! I would say most Americans have never HEARD of Vegemite. They don't so much as "hate" it, but they've never eaten it. I looked this video up when I read an article about an American company changing its recipe and about the back fire when they changed Vegemite's recipe.
So don't be harsh about us Americans. We can't like or hate something if we've never tried it. Or heard of it. Or even seen it in our grocery stores.
@mazza23 Acutally, I did and even added loads of cheese, but it only made it taste worse. Vegemite is the only product that I absolutely can't stand, I mean, I eat practically everything, even bitter melon and neem-flowers, but Vegemite? EEEEEW.
LOL LOL i agree totally KRAFT HAVE GOT THIS REALLY WRONG THE ASSHOLES ARE TEARING DOWN AN ICONIC I CON (LOL) -
I DONT WANT TO EAT VEGEMITE WITH CREAM CHEESE YIKE - I THINK KRAFT HAVE SO MUCH OF THAT DISGUSTING BOTTLES CREAM CHEESE THEY THOUGHT - WHAT CAN WE DO WITH IT BEFORE WE THROW IT OUT THEY MIXED IT WITH VEGEMITE BOOO HOOO SHAME ON U KRQAFT6
I normally have it just on it's own on toast. Lovely. Despite being British, I prefer Vegemite to Marmite. Marmite is just so strong, you can only have a wafer thin amount otherwise it just blows you sideways.
I have to disagree, zennus. You don't have to grow up eating it to like it. I just tried my first Vegemite today. I'm eating it between typing. A thin layer on Vegemite on whole grain bread is yummy. A little salty for my hypertension (I'm hoping for the Reduced Salt version, so even Granny can eat it!) Hey, do you have to refrigerate this stuff?
lol! I believe ya when my (Australian ) Girlfriend was clearing out her cupboard after sharing a flat for a year she had a bit left in a jar, Gives me a bit on a spoon "not bad I says" yea says she and its been hidden behind the flour for 8 months till now!
The good thing about vegemite is that it has a very long expiration date, so even after 8 months, it would still have been as fresh as when she first bought it.
I love my vegemite. Truthfully I reckon Americans wouldn't hate it so much if you ate it right. Don't put heeps on! Only alittle (unless you're a diehard fan of it). If it's your first try only put ALITTLE!!!!!
I have a friend whom I talk with who is from the Perth area. he is going to send a jar of it over to me, so I'll get to try it for the first time. I can't find it around here in Phoenix. Should be interesting. He said the same thing, a thin spread on toast. I'm going to video my first experience of vegemite and send him the video. LOL!
I've tried it once, I'm an American. I did put only a thin layer of vegemite on a piece of bread. OMG I WANTED TO BARF! What's in that stuff anyways?! It doesn't taste very good, lol
The best every way to eat vegemite is one piece of bread then butter then vegemite(thin)Then you get another slice put peanut butter on it.Then put it together and there you go the best tast ever!!YES you herd me vegemite and peanut butter.I love it but not many people i know can eat it the way i do.:P
Also, from what I've been told by an Australian friend when discussing Vegemite, American bread tends to be much sweeter than Aussie bread, thus making the spread taste like crap (like when I tried it). My friend suggested using a sourdough bread with Vegemite - then it doesn't taste as salty.
Although I ain't pure Aussie, I was born in Australia and I enjoyed Vegemite, and to facts, Veggies help your growth and other things, which is why Vegemite is a good choice for your children, also it contains vitamins (Obviously) which can also help adults with hard work which gives strains and is good for when your having lunch to get rid of those stresses.
Honestly if you get worked up so easily that you'll stress over someone you'll never know liking a certain type of food, and disliking something else at the same time, you're going to stress yourself into an early grave and I feel sorry for you.
My point was toward the people who don't like vegemite, it might seem wierd to them, peanut butter and jam seems wierd to us, what's the difference? I don't get how stupid someone has to be to have it explained to them like this?
The only way to eat vegemite is no butter straight off the knife. my record is 8.5 of those little vegemite pack things u get at hotel breakfasts on one pice of bread. it was just black

The thing with vegemite you have to eat it with bread that is not sweet. American bread is too sweet for vegemite.
or....
if you are willling you can try this..
make a sandwich of vegemite on toast with cheese. dunk in hot tea.. perfect!!
shikira 2 years ago
No your don't. I put vegemite on all sorts of foods (sweet, plain, what-have-you) and it's perfectly fine to me.
But then I have stong taste buds, so I can go through a whole jar (medium-sized, anyway) in only a day.
