  • God Bless you LHea!!! To God be the Glory!!

  • The should have "patted" her back smoothly... I think Lea's back broke into pieces! haha wild man.... ♥ Anyway, she's just toooooooooooo amazing. :)

  • of course she wins the award.......... who else will?

    Lea's the best!

  • Nothing is so precious as a pure and happy Filipina.

  • God. And Actor's Equity. Ha! I think she got the order reversed.

  • Thank you Leah for being a Filipina. No superlative is sufficient to describe the beautiful and delightful person that you are. You and your angelic voice are God's gift to everybody.

  • And Jennifer Damiano is just being born....

  • Her first international musical and she got the lead role, won the Tony, Drama guild & Olivier award all in her first musical role....definitely the first Asian to win all three & if I am not mistaken the youngest to do so....now that is what I call ahhhhhhhmazing. Those who still want to question her talent can go back to the cave where they've been hiding & stay there.

  • She's so amazing. She performs every role so amazingly :)

  • Did he pronouce her name right?

  • The Wizard just handed Kim a Tony!

  • She was like, 20 at that time. and she looks like she's twelve. -.-

  • @glalieguy age pretty much hits us, asians, like around....mmm... 60. :P

  • She sounds like an American speaker; doesn't have that obnoxious tagolog accent at all.

  • @infinera06 obnoxious tagalog accent?

  • @infinera06 and in the auditions she had a British accent hehe

  • @infinera06 : Yes, like any seasoned actress, she can quickly pick up the accent of the country she's working in. Like in this case, you can hear the obnoxious American accent. (One, it's TagAlog. Two, I'm wondering if you know the meaning of "obnoxious". If you don't, read your post again. That's the definition.) (cc: @CuteMashii)

  • @NicoleTirona You must be a flip.

  • @infinera06 Takes one to know one =))

  • @NicoleTirona Calling me a flip?! That's low!

  • @infinera06 BWAHAHAHAHA! You're SO funny!

Thirdly, walang dapat o kailangan ikumpara.I <3 Lea..and the other Filipino artists!

  • @themusiclibraryofkae sobrang fan ako ni mariah carey! PERO sobrang layu naman ng genre nila ni lea noh... classic at pang broadway c lea.. tsaka kanya kanyang lugar yan... di rin namn ako sure what would mariah be like if nag broadway siya... lam naman natin yung style ng singing niya... Nevertheless, galing2 ni lea.. ganda ng boses buong-buo.. for me, di naman niya kelangan bumirit kc ganda na ng quality ng voice niya....

  • 1:56 Is that a barcode on the bottom of the Tony?

  • lol that guy broke her spine with that hug.

  • @jazzgrenade that's her brother

  • Nice, talented girl. Bless her heart.

  • love u lea :-)

  • When she said BAck home she meant the Philippines most of the filipino artists are very patriotic most especially when they have the light casted upon them. They never fail to mention the country at one way or the other.

  • not only the Tony, she also won the much-coveted Olivier, Drama Desk etcetera, etcetera, etcetera award for Miss Saigon. it was a Grandslam!!!!!

  • shes beautiful

  • i love lea

  • "I'd like to first of all thank God for all of his Blessings... I'd also like to thank Actors Equity"... hahaha ... so precious! I love Lea!

  • Lea Salonga...World Class talaga!

  • HINDI SIYA SOSYALERA.. BAKYA KA LANG... CHUSSS KALA MO NAMAN KUNG SINO KA.. PWEE

  • @ulysis2007 HAHAHAHAHA...UTAK MO ANG BULOK....GAGA!!!!

  • @brolami why do unknown jealous half-wits equate intellect and eloquency with being "sosyalera"??? reality check, only pathetic, low-life dummies have that kind of mentality. am i right? of course i am! clap3x. ROFL

  • i love u lea

  • still she is the Broadway and London West end goddess.

  • @Rcrextine, lol! I know right? When she was in London she had this Brit accent and then when she's in the USA it's gone! Lol! Whatever!

  • @rsv021978: Nothing unusual about that. I worked in London for a few years and after a short while you just start talking like that, it's the way most everyone talk so it just comes naturally without a second thought. I'm back in the states now and I think I've lost that accent, at least no one say I have it.

  • class act lea! you are the single most awesome human being for me right now.

  • Class act, incomparable talent - an award very well deserved

  • People who disliked this are --- wait, NO ONE disliked this.

    I love Lea

  • Damn haters... Don't compare her to singers in a different genre. Her talent is for theatrical music not for pop.

  • Lol what happen to British accent? Good job Leah...

  • @Rcrextine this was on 1991. :)

  • when her name was announced in the nomination roll she seems to have gotten a lot more applause than the other 4 people :3

  • she really is an intelligent woman.

  • It's amazing! MISS SAIGON was her first Broadway show! and she was only 19 years old! And she WON! Truly Inspiring, she is one of the reasons i know dreams come true!

  • @princemistoffelees

Nope! She got her Tony at 21.

  • Nice speech! Concise and meaningful.

  • Lea Salonga is the one and only reason why I want to adopt a Filapino girl when I am older! :)

  • so young and yet, so inspirational

  • lea is a musical goddess. she can't be human <3 <3

  • amazing! beauty... brains... talent...PERFECT!

  • blah blah blah for blah blah blah...*clap clap clap*

blah blah blah for blah blah blah...*clap clap clap*

    leah salonga, for miss saigon..*WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*

and the tony goes to...lea salonga..*the crowd goes wild*

  • I always love watching these acceptance speeches -- especially hearing the cheers even before the winner's named.

  • lea is Beautiful :) is the best!!!

  • LEAH SALONGA TONY AWARDS

REGINE VELASQUEZ ASIA PACIFIC SONG FESTIVAL

    CHARICE GRAMMY !!!

  • @ellocodkalabasa Charice got a grammy?

  • LOL @ these comments comparing Lea to Mariah. You can't compare a theatrical singer to a fucking pop star. That's the dumbest shit ever. You fuckers never heard about "Music Genre"?

  • @frogsOnTheLoose Amen. lol!

  • I was pronouncing her name so wrong... LOL

  • love lea!

  • she's so humble! :)

  • lea is the best.

  • the best!

  • She's really adorable :)

  • What makes Lea different from other well known singers?

    Can anyone answer me?

  • @meann60 hmmm, achievements, Just look at her profile. It may not be that platinum album like most singers maybe that's why she's different. Oh Plus, she also acts, in case you're not aware, she's been acting since she's seven.

  • Comment removed

  • @meann60 uhm, I'm not a sir ok, so you're point exactly in asking is_____???? I'm sorry I just look up to her so much that I'm being defensive here esp to those ignorant people on the web and comparing her to Pop stars. Peace out

  • @athenstar10 I understand what you feel bec. we are in the same situation.Well, I'm sorry if i bothered you with that question. At least I know that there is someone like you who recognize Miss Lea as "FIRST AMONG EQUAL"...

  • @meann60 She isn't a singer, not really, she's an actress with an amazing vocal range. What makes her different? She's an actress.

  • Comparing Lea with other Pop stars is just ridiculous, she's not one of them. She belongs to the high calibers, "Creme de la Creme" of world class performers, one of the chosen few to be at the tip of the "Pyramid" (don't get me wrong charice's fans, I'm also proud of her)

  • i can see her suprise and happiness although this is very old video...

  • Both Lea Salonga and Charice are good singers in their own genre... However, Lea has a very beautiful face which we can't say to Charice.... Right?

  • You are so wonderful! You filled the world with your voice.

  • awww how inspiring!

  • imagine TONY AWARDS. Its just like winning a Grammy or an Oscar, Charice haven't made anything near that. She's Just building fame on the "POP" culture. siguro hahanga na ako ng kaunti sa kanya kung manominate man lang sya sa grammy awards

  • @Gatchapen we will see... lea salonga is lea salonga!!!!! but charice just building her way ryt now..... 1 year from now charice is a huge star!!!! cross finger.....

  • @Gatchapen

At this point Charice hasn't but wait a little more time...She is only 18. Broadway is a less fierce jungle than the road to Grammy, so don't compare...If Leah were to tread on the same road, Charice would by far achieve more mileage...Leah, though her voice is cultured and nice, she really doesn't have the range to pit with global legends like Christina, Beyonce, Whitney, Mariah....She already had her limits at the starting line...Charice has better chances in the global music...

  • @zyberlexi - Don't compare? Practice what you preach please. Read what you have indited here. You clearly compared Lea to the likes of Beyonce, Whitney and Mariah. Before writing any comments I suggest that you stand by what you're trying to say, instead of going against it. Lea is in the world of Broadway, which is an elitist form of art. Lea should not be compared to anyone. She has made the Filipinos proud and is a epitome of true talent.

  • @geecasta

honey, my comparison of the vocal range of Leah to these GLOBAL MUSIC LEGENDS was a SUBSEQUENT REINFORCING FOLLOW-UP to support the "If Leah were to tread on the same road as Charice". DON'T COMPARE A RULER TO A YARDSTICK. Broadway is by far a small box, a speck of dust in the vastness of the entertainment world. However you say it, it has always been made a SPRINGBOARD for most artist to successfully make a cross-over to a much larger popular musical. But Leah got stuck in it..

  • @zyberlexi Both Lea Salonga and Charice are good singers in their own genre... However, Lea has a very beautiful face which we can't say to Charice.... Right?

  • @noypimusiko

“Very beautiful”?...LOL..honey, beauty is subjective and talent is what we’re talking here…if leah’s face were deemed as “very beautiful” , then perhaps she would have been bigger Hollywood material than the likes of Tia Carrere, Kelly Hu, Michelle Yeoh, Lucy Liu, etc…Charice, may not be beautiful and is definitely small, but she is the first asian in music to make big in GIANT AMERICA…

  • @noypimusiko

Charice is highly visible in world’s most renowned media such as the Asosciated Press, New York Times, CNN, People, MTV, Us Magazine, E! News, Los Angeles Times, etc...How about Lea? Charice’s recent performance at the America’s Songwriter Hall of Fame that received standing ovation from the giants & frontrunners of the GLOBAL music industry (not a small box like Broadway) SPEAKS VOLUMES OF WORD “TALENT”…

  • are you sane?

  • @geecasta

Leah attempted to conquer beyond this theatrical walls (in Disney, then hollywood) but didn't really make it further...Her Asian ethnicity and English proficiency primordially made her perfect, puzzle-fit for the Miss Saigon role but it was a self-limiting start and end of it. Not sure about hollywood, but in a world of a much larger music genres where real "DIVAS" reign, Leah just doesn't have what it takes to figure prominently...

  • Comment removed

  • @zyberlexi Broadway, less fierce jungle? If you're talking about fame, sales and topping the charts maybe, coz that's the job of the pop stars and Lea never wanted to be one. Have you tried being in a musical? I've never been but I'd friends and believe me, it's tougher than what most think. It's A LOT harder than doing a concert. Musical theater is for those who are passionate about performing & not about fame. Mariah, Charice, nor Whitney wouldn't sound good on other genre neither.

  • @athenstar10

Really?...Lea never wanted to successfully cross-over to other larger music genre?..She never wanted to get out of Broadway, a miniature box in the vastness of the global music world?...LOL...convince yourself...How large an audience an ARTIST has is always the true measure of her success...With her limited vocal range, she just doesn't have what it takes to make it in a bigger, wider global stage that's why she has chosen to get stuck in a theater box...

  • @zyberlexi As i've mentioned earlier, it's the "Pop" world, not the whole music world. She's well aware of her abilities and limitations that's why she doesn't force herself in trying sooo hard to fit in to what's popular coz that will be stupid. Yes, Others may have larger audience but most of them have shorter fame. Where's Whitney, right now? Do Mariah and Cristina still have that same fame as before? I'm now crossing my fingers on Beyonce and Charice.

  • @athenstar10

LOL...shorter fame?....These divas with short-lived fame you say have sung and some, has even composed and produced their own(Mariah), songs that have touch the hearts of millions on all corners of the globe...Songs that have made these divas IMMORTALS...Whitney's power ballads in the 90s and Mariah's ARE UNDYING SONGS that will live and be relived for generations...The world will always remember them each time their songs are being played and sung...LONGEVITY IN GLOBAL SCALE...

  • @zyberlexi We're they really successful? maybe in the beginning yes. An artist is said to be successful not only coz he/she can sell well but most importantly if she can sustain that "fame thing" for years in Lea's case, in decades. Let's also accept the fact that most singers now a days are just showing off that's why I don't call them "artists" 'coz that's for people who are really deserving. Even divas could not go beyond their genre 'coz they'll sound crazy while Lea will still sound good.

  • @athenstar10

so what "short fame" are you talking about? From the smallest igloos in Alaska to the skyscrapers in New York, these GLOBAL DIVAS' songs are played and sung making their names indelibly EXPLOSIVE GALACTIC-WIDE...For years now in singing contests anywhere, including American Idol, Britain's Got Talent, etch, whose songs are always sung by newer generations today -Whitney's & Mariah's songs back in the '90s...And where is Lea now?... can she ever command $10 dollars in ticket sales?

  • @zyberlexi Did you really just ask if one of the biggest broadway stars of our generation can command $10 in ticket sales? Wow, you're actually one of the stupidest people I've ever encountered on the internet.

And seriously, Mariah Carey? She hasn't done shit. Whitney Houston is ten thousand times more influential than anything Mariah has ever done.

  • @HikariDragonRyuu

Really? Point 1: She was a short-lived industry superstar now dimming to its twilight and now pushed aside to the sidelights with limited roles. Now answer me. Where is she now? If the market demand in the theater box is high, why get out of it? "Questioning whether she can command $10 in ticket sales" was meant more to be a figure of speech but now it appears more like a "glaring reality".

Point 2: No need to lambast Mariah Carey. I am die-hard fan of Whitney...

  • @zyberlexi Lea Salonga... isn't a short-lived industry superstar. You know absolutely nothing about the musical theater industry. Mariah Carey and Lea Salonga, first of all, are COMPLETELY incomparable. For one, LEA SALONGA IS A FUCKING ACTRESS. She's still making a shitload of money. Have you ever seen Mulan? How about Aladdin? Than you've heard her voice.

She's still an industry superstar. Just not an industry that you know anything about.

  • @zyberlexi Oh, and because you asked where she is now. She's currently performing on a world tour entitled "Lea Salonga... Your Songs."

I said it before, and I'll say it again. You are actually one of the most retarded people I've ever encountered on the internet.. Look her up on wikipedia, for god's sake, it takes two minutes.

  • @zyberlexi Lastly: She's gotten older. Most musical theater actors' careers last from ages 22-32. After that, most actors retire to teach or perform in concerts.

  • @HikariDragonRyuu

LOL…and you?…A FREAK WITH SINGLE DIGIT IQ!!!…convince yourself dumb ass!!!..lol…and before you butt in our verbal wrestling try to read all the exchange of messages and not just a fragment of it…I simply reacted to a comment of your other HEADLESS colleague LIKE YOU when he compared Lea to a young rising pop star…

  • @zyberlexi ...Did you really just call me headless? Nice try, kid.

  • @HikariDragonRyuu

Lea is not a singer? Lea attempted to conquer beyond the theater walls first by singing for Disney (Mulan & Aladdin) and made series of small concerts and an MTV in the late 90s. Obviously, she was experiencing DROUGHT in theater works by then but with her limited vocal range, she just doesn’t have what takes to succeed in much larger music genre like pop. Even your statement “that most musical theater actors' careers last from ages 22-32” is a validation of this..

  • @zyberlexi Um. Her limited vocal range? She's got a four octave range. I'm too tired to bother to argue with you, but I will let you know this; Mulan and Aladdin are MUSICAL THEATER. You know absolutely NOTHING about Broadway. You think that vocal ability has anything to do with whether or not you make it in pop? Look at Kesha, look at Justin Bieber; they can't sing worth shit.

Pop is not the end-all music genre, regardless of what you might think.

  • @zyberlexi Just a question. Has Mariah Carey ever won an ACTING AWARD?... Mariah AT PRESENT can't even sing her previous hits in the 90's properly, sometimes out of tune. Now talk about mariah's vocal range.

and tell Mariah to dress her age.

  • @rharharhu

LOL...hey, you don't have to lambast Mariah!!!...I'm a Whitney fan...FAct is that a single lifetime achievements of Mariah as a diva, composer & producer in terms of records sales, Billboards remains unmatched...Mariah thrives in the type of art that is really much vast, global there more fierce, more competitive and more pressured. So when your broadway diva performs 60 days a year in a theater box, Mariah performs 5 times in terms of concerts, appearances to a global audience....

  • @rharharhu

So a star diva diva of Mariah's league has countless engagements that is way more prolific in numbers and with wider audience than a broadway superstar that performs only in a small box... so Mariah's vocal resources are naturally much USED UP...she is like racing car that was able to successfully accelerate and went 10 times ahead in a race then at some point snagged...she may have stopped but her contemporaries even hardly made it one-tenth of what Mariah has traversed so far...

  • @zyberlexi Lea Salonga is only unknown to poor, uneducated, uncultured housewives and 13 year olds. Look at a list of highest paid musicians; legends like Lea Salonga and Kristin Chenoweth make far more money than Mariah Carey does. No one cares about her anymore; she's yesterday's news.

  • @zyberlexi

She was casted as Fantine, Cinderella and Grizabella for the last three years. Those were all Lead roles and major parts. I don't think she is a superstar dimming to twilight. She need not to audition for these roles, she was recommended. Obviously, she's still much in demand in her field.

  • @isnukwin well said!!!! I extreamly agree with you!

  • Hail Lea full of grace!!!!

  • Hail to Queen Leah!

    From a Charice addict

    BeckyM

  • Comment removed

  • wow! lea was impressive even before she deserves the award

  • i feel crying im so proud of lea love lea

  • Aw, Lea looks so happy. This has got to be the proudest moment of her life!

  • lea's voice is soothing! sorry to say but charice belts it out but gives me a headache...that's not music! i do like susan boyle very much, but sorry, no one compares lea! she's one of a kind.

  • Now I'm really, really in love.

  • go lea....i remember watching this almost 20 years ago...still the one filipinas look up to for inspiration.......

  • she's so amazing

  • we love lea salonga and sarah geronimo...

  • I'm a fan since her KLIM commercial at the age of 5 or 6. The jingle even stuck in my head like a glue. "I love milk, I love KLIM, so rich and so creamy, o-wo wowo wowowo, I love KLIM!"

  • I was just watching another video of lea 2yrs prior to this awards night. She had a british accent. haha.. Now she totally dropped it for an american accent. Personally, I liked the brit accent better.

  • you can tell also that lea is an intellectualy bright person.

  • @mrandmrsjwhitney i remember a story of her when she was five she auditioned for a stage musical, when it was her turn she got the lines memorized by listening to the first kids that auditioned.she was also class valedictorian in her school in greenhills.

  • Lea is the most beautiful person through & through. She is strong and keeps herself grounded though bursting with unmeasurable talent. I am so glad she has befriended young Charice. I hope Lea is Charice's #1 role model.

Lea is still as beautiful as she was in 1991 and fills each room she enters with class and grace!

  • PILIPINO AKO!!!!

  • saw her in les miz, she was lovely!

  • Wow. This is awesome. CONGRATULATIONS LEA!!!!!!!!! Filipinos have been making waves lately.

  • I love her soo much! how I wish, the time would go back so i can watch her live the time she started in Miss Saigon.. she's priceless!

  • naluha ako sa speech mo Lea !

  • haha shes adorable when she hears her name

  • @jAcjAC1016 so cute! :)

  • she desrve the award ... the best LEA wlang kpantay!

  • the laughter when lea thanked actors equity....priceless! oh the "dramz' they had to go through to bring miss saigon to broadway.

  • joel gray & lily tomlin! WIN!

  • Also , she was trained as a stage actress at a very young age for mostly broadway musicals. She starred in "Annie" and played "Liesl" in "The Sound of Music" from the Repertoire Philippines. Plus , in the Philippines , since english is the second language , it's not unusual to hear kids , especially from exclusive schools or from well-off families , speaking english like it's their native tongue.

  • To the question why Lea speaks english without a filipino accent or like she was born and grew up in the US , it's because she didn't learn to speak the PI native tongue until she was a teenager. I remember an interview of hers when she was really young and she said that she wasn't taught or not spoken to in tagalog by her mom. She started or learned speaking tagalog when she joined the showbizness in the Philippines ( she was an orig. member of "That's Entertainment " teen show ).

  • yap! I think you were right, I remember that show "That's Entertainment" and she is my favorite back then, she barely speaks tagalog but she learn it quickly and you can she that she is outstanding among others.

  • Don't generalize. Not all Filipinos do that. for example "me" i don't do that. I probably speak English better than you mofo.

  • Yayy! Joel Grey!

  • Obviously because it's not our native language. Try speaking tagalog and let's see how we react to it.

  • I don't agree with any of you who argue about Regine and Lea, that's like comparing Patti and Madonna. there's a very different streak when it comes to performing broadway which regine is obviously not in, pop that's hers, and thuchawes is right about the note thing just look at bernadette peters her range isn't that high but oh her voice can make you cry!!!!

  • I have a question, and it may be ignorant so I'm sorry if it is, but why does she not have an accent? She speaks english like a natural born american english speaker, I thought she grew up in the Philippines?

  • That's because filipinos can easily adapt. Almost every Filipino who work outside have no accent at all. Believe me when you meet one someday you'll see it's true

  • Kikay - disagree with you that Filipinos (immigrants) can easily adapt. Lots of Filipinos in the US have thick accent of varying kinds and often times, their grammar needs correction. They speak in incomplete sentences as if they leave their thoughts hanging. Generally, those who adapt the native accent are people who come to the US before the age of 12. Lea is an exception - like many artists, she has a linguistic intelligence. Watch video of her in London speaking with an English accent.

  • very well said thuchawes..

  • and yet filipinos (regines fans mostly) still consider "regine" as the greatest voice ever! that is such an insult! if theres one person in the entertainment biz that we filipinos should be proud of, that is LEA!

"ooh regine can reach such SUPER HIGH NOTES THAT NO ONE CAN EVER DO, ha beat that!" if that is your perception of a "great singer" (reaching high notes), then your too shallow! seriously im nearly going deaf hearing regine's screeching voice! im mean could she scream any louder?!!

  • I love Regine and I love Lea too, Im proud of them both but i think if people(Filipino's) like Regine more than lea or saying Regine has a better singing voice than her, wel its their opinion we should respect that like what you posted its your opinion and I can not question that. lets just be happy that we have great artist in the the Philippines like Lea and Regine..PERIOD

  • look at that tap in 0:38, that's abuse if you ask me

  • LOL! it looked painful.

  • i doubt it....no offense to regine... but basing on their backgrounds, LEA got more edge than regine, being in the limelight since childhood..you have to be trained in theater, to get a Tony award, you just cant get that easily..

    my two cents..tnx

  • Comparing Regine to Lea is a travesty. It's like comparing the Jonas Brothers to The Doors, totally laughable. Lea is a genuine article. Sorry to say this but Regine is way too phony: she's got some pipes but with no artistic bone in her body.

  • Audrey Hepburn of the Philippines
