To hear Clapton put it into perspective like that shows you why he is who he is. My thoughts exactly in regard to approach to singing. Freddie King, Otis Rush, Elmore James and the Wolf truly put the blues where you want it to be. E.C., are you with me?
I find it interesting that although Eric Clapton is overrated by the public, in the flesh he is a very modest and humble person, always crediting his influences and fellow guitarists -- Otis, Albert King, Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Buddy Guy, etc!! By the way, his playing on the Bluesbreakers album is some of the most spectacular blues-rock ever recorded!!
Every time I saw otis live in the 80's he played finger to string , no pick . Saw him about 20 times between 1979 & 1989 . Small clubs standing right in front of him.
@sgrroiii There's a video of Otis playing with a small band from the late 70's/early 80's and in one close-up you can see him produce a pick from his palm and start playing with that, then later it's tiucked away again, it looks like something a magician would do! Some players can manage this, beats me how, I need a fingerpick so I don't drop the thing...
Probably knows what he's talking about, because he's listened to otis for a long long time, has personally met and played with otis, and because he's one of the most infuential blues guitarists of all time
Eric Always had an intersting point of view. Yes, Eric is devoted to the blues like his heros. Eric was and is still another in a long line of beautiful passing of the culture along. Eric bridges the gap between old white guys who never knew blues and the huge world of blues they missed and can learn about. Pass the culture Eric. Nice.
Yeah, one night I played a jam at a club in Denver. After the guy running the thing heard me he said " I can see now that one has to EARN the right to play the blues." I am in my 50s now and have been playing the blues and living for a long time. Clapton is pretty drunk here. intimidated maybe. Strange, 'cuz he plays so well and confidently with BB King. Actually, Otis Rush uses a pick, but I know what he means. Albert King played with his fingers; it didn't matter what amp he played through.

What ever you may think of EC's playing/career ; he was important in boosting the earning potential of the older bluesmen.

So sick of Eric Clapton.
Such incredible conceit.
Lost his signature phrasing and composition back in '70. Lost the bend vibrato and hasn't played a coherent statement since Blind Faith.
Ohhh, but those Mayall & Cream days!
That's what people don't get. By the time he was 'recognized' as a solo 'superstar' he had lost it. Any true Claptonite knows this.

I think EC summed up my feeling about music here, "I wasn't interested in boy's music, I was interested in men's music."
I listen to EC just like he listened to Otis...

I think thats what he meant. He met and played with Otis, and as you can see, he still thinks he played with his fingers.
