@Faritych Лемешев учился в консерватории у лучших педагогов, 5 лет ставил голос, о чем сам писал. Какой самородок? Его учителя обучались у итальянцев, в том числе у Камилло Эверарди. Вы наверняка не слышали его в опере, тем более в Ленском, если пишете это. Германа он действительно не пел на сцене, но арию записал.

@Faritych Козловский не нравится, но это выдающийся певец. Почитайте мемуары лорда Харвуда, интенданта Royal opera house (Thongs and the bones), много нового узнаете о Лемешеве. Есть блог профессионала EdmundSt.Austell. Eсть немало высказываний в рецензиях на пластинки и оперных словарях. Западные специалисты не сомневаются в высоком классе Лемешева-оперного певца. Вы явно не слышали его главные, довоенные записи, иначе не о чем было бы спорить. А то, что "другие думают" - стереотип.

1) The old lady is Irina Maslennikova, Lemeshevs ex-wife.Together they recorded several operas. She says that their divorce was not a tragedy, because their marriage had been falling apart gradually.
The middle-aged man is a famous tenor of the Bolshoi Alexei Maslennikov. He says , Every tenor dreams about the role of Gherman. (Maslennikov is not a relative of Irinas. )
3)I saw the whole documentary; both suggested that Lemeshev had been wrong for the part. As if he shouldnt try to sing it at all.
I totally disagree; first because Lemeshev never tried to sing the complete opera; second, because his version of the aria is excellent. His performance fits the lyrics very much; while cold and aggressive Gherman would be unconvincing in this aria.
The famous conductor Yevgeny Svetlanov admired Lemeshev as Gherman .
2)By the way, the name of the soprano singing Liza is Leokadia Maslennikova; she is not a relative neither of Irinas nor of Alexeis (this last name is very common)
The old man is Boris Pokrovsky, an outstanding director of the Bolshoi. He is Irinas husband and a step-father to Lemeshevs daughter Maria. He says that Gherman should not be as lyric as Lensky, To play Gherman you havent to be tender. Then Alexei Maslennikov says that the part was written for a dramatic tenor.
There is NO ONE who can sing as LEMESHEV did even until now. The tenors are purely manufactured today. The ART of SINGING is fully demonstrated here.

This video is from another film-concert called "Konzert masterov iskusstv" 1952. He sang only one aria.
