Gee when they said Disney did what he had to in order to make back the money sucked up by the production of Fantasia during the war they weren't kidding. A lot of the stuff he made for the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs was never meant to be seen by North American eyes. This was all for the Latin countries, like Panama, where Malaria was a huge problem.
I am terrified of Dopey. Not only does he keep a meat cleaver concealed in his sleeve, (what else could be in there?) but he also sprays just about everything else around him with pesticides before finally getting a single mosquito. He also keeps a frog under his hat, in the event that he runs out of things to murder.
during WW11 disney and other animation companies had a contract with the government to make propaganda films in order to not get drafted. films like this came about, they did not want to make these films but its either that or die on the front lines.
why can't we have good animated propaganda to teach our kids useful things instead of stupid Disney channel making them want to be like Hanna Montana and feel bad if they're not beautiful or have some sort of talent?
Not saying this is a good way of spreading a message though. lol spreading oil on the water now would alert the EPA XD
Thank goodness malaria doesn't exist here nowadays, thanks to research, better health habits and the development of vaccines. But there are countries where malaria is an epidemic.
@31operafan There is no effective malaria vaccine yet. It's difficult to vaccinate against a eukaryotic cell & the parasite mutates readily to bypass the changing immune system. The eradication of malaria in the States was largely due to tons of DDT & other insecticides and the draining of southern wetlands for development. But yes, we still have a long way to go to help the rest of the world, both in understanding the mosquito an the parasite.
Looney Tunes also did cartoons on this subject, except only the soldiers got to see it back then. They were three Snafu cartoons, each one about protecting oneself from mosquitoes while out on the battlefield. In each one Snafu didn't learn his lesson, not even the third one.
@mickeyelric11 still, Public Enemy Number 1. AIDS doesn't hold a candle to Malaria. Count in other mosquito borne diseases like Dengue and Leishmaniasis.
My mom grew up in the 50's when the city would still spray the trees for mosquitoes. She says that for years after those days there were rarely any bats or birds around. It is amazing that we survived the 40's not only with the war but environmentally as well. Today if you want to control the mosquitoes put up a bat house.
OK lemme see if I've got this... If we permanently drain all natural bodies of water, or at least pump them full of oil and poison, destroy all indigenous vegetation, spray more poison throughout every corner of your home and environment, and bury all of your garbage in a landfill, we will somehow PREVENT the land we live on from turning into a barren, lifeless wasteland? Hmm...
@SirSinister put a lid on it. its a 40's show. back then all was experimental. thanks to them, we learned to be more careful in choosing what we spray and put on. sheesh!
This was before "OFF!" bug repellent was created, so no one realized until later that filling the water with oil and Paris Green kills not just mosquito larvae but everything else in there as well.
Overall neat cartoon, I'm nuts for the Seven Dwarfs.
It was WWII, so, I would look at it in its time....This cartoon served its purpose as training film, for our servicemen and civilians..And who could be a better instructor than someone you know?
@Mr111989 I believe the world has changed so much since then..I don't think today's audience has become much too jaded since then..In our world of mega-info, we've lost so much of the magic..
@zipper179 I know how you feel, with the rise of the internet, it's like why waste time making training films when you could look up what need to know with Google. Still, I think it would be nice if educational films like these were made today so that those of us who do not have Internet connections can learn about what they should or should not do when it comes to situations like what is being shown here.
@Mr111989 I have to agree with you.. I actually read about misquitos when I was a 4th grader.. We don't seem to read to our children anymore.. Films like CAN teach..
@zipper179 This is why films like this need to be made again. Films like this can teach today's children the kind of information that can't always be found on the internet.
@Mr111989 100% in agreement.. Look at what Frank Capra did with the 'Why We Fight' series during WWII. He beat the Nazis at their own game, in propaganda films.. And, Disney used Goofy to teach drivers' education in the high schools..
Walt Disney had done wonders, filmwise.. His 'True-Life Adventure' films brought nature films to us in a way never before shown.. And that was for starters..
@zipper179 Which brings me back to the point I made earlier: These kinds of educational and training films need to be made again because they could teach anyone all the things they need to know that is not or cannot be taught through technological means. If today's public and military had more films like these, then our culture wouldn't be as dumbed down. Wouldn't you agree?
@Mr111989 You betcha! I have offered use of my videos to schools I have worked in, free of charge. You'd think with all the poor mouthing, they'd jump at. But, no...! Their wheels are stuck in the mud, and, they're victims of their own infighting..
Malaria is a horrible, extremely painful disease. They had to fight it even if the means were not environmentally friendly. It's bog drainage that eliminated it from Europe. Bad for wildlife, of course, but I'm thankful I don't have to fear malaria.
Ridding the northern hemisphere of Malaria (see 0:45) we have spared ourselves untold misery and unhealth.
Shame the africans can't do the same: DDT has been banned by the environmentalists, and african countries are still today paying the price by millions of dead people...
They do? Would cutting your grass, chopping down a sickly tree, or digging recreating a certain part of your land for crops be destroying the environment?
Mosquitos do not derive nutrition from blood (if they did, the male would feed on it too). On the contrary, both sexes feed on nectare and thus help pollinate plants. Females need the protein from blood to construct the shells for their eggs (this trait is also shared by Horseflies as well).Their offspring are also important food sources to many species in nature as well.
(Note: I'm NOT endorsing "killer" mosquitoes with this message!) I hate how people always make animals who inadvertantly carry diseases seem like they are doing it intentionally. This is a blatant example of anthropomorphism--assigning human traits to nature. If you look at this objectively, like a biologist would, this is just one of a myriad of examples of an endo parasite evolving to take advantage of an ectoparasite...It's just survival. Besides, humans transferr diseases, too!
Actually, compared to the other malaria-related propaganda, this one doesn't really show the mosquito as intentionally doing it with intent to spread malaria- save for the whole giant mosquito thing... I do get what your saying, though and I agree with it. ;)
So, as much as I support getting rid of the damned SCOURGE that is mosquitoes and especially those with malaria, there are tons of environmental wall-banger level screw ups. Oil in the water? Spraying pesticide everywhere? Burying your cans? Seriously, if Captain Planet were anywhere near, he would beat the tar out of these guys!! ...No offense to The Seven Dwarves.
Wow, talk about overkill. Destroy the land and wreck habitats for mosquitos? I hate to think what they did with things like slugs. "Rip up your garden! Spray oil and pesticides everywhere! Don't buy slug killer like a normal person - use *insert toxic chemical here* instead!"
