I was sad too. way back when. But I know the horse didn't die. And its easy to see its being lowered into muddy water buy a platform under it. In one of the scenes you can see it swimming. before they rise the platform up again so it has its footing again.

This scene has always bothered me, if Artex (I've thought it was spelled with an e)

was consumed by the swamp because of the sadness, then why didn't Atreyu get sucked down as well? I'd be pretty sad if my pony just got sucked into a swamp.

The parts of the scene where Atreyu leads Atrex through the Swamp were relatively easy to shoot, but problems arose in the part where Artex is overwhelmed by hopelesness and slowly sinks into the mud to a certain death while Atreyu calls out to his friend not to give up and to keep on fighting.

man this scene used to fuck me up so bad when I was young. As this movie's point being if you don't dream a future, if you have no ideas for your life, then the things in your life will slowly disappear(the nothing), once that has happened; you have to go through the swamps of sadness (a great depression) while you figure yourself out & find something. My brothers world was destroyed by the nothing, & he sunk into the swamps of sadness (he shot himself) instead of figuring something out. So sad

I'll be THAT guy to admit that I was rather impartial to the horse dying in the movie. He was in the movie for about 4-6 minutes which wasn't enough time for the horse's character to grow on me.

One of the horses they were using for the film drowned.. The horse drowned while they were shooting the scene for "The Swamps of Sadness". They were using platform lifts, and there was a malfunction, resulting in the lift taking the horse down, but not being able to bring it back up. They unfortunately could not save the horse. Noah Hathaway (Aetryu) was so traumatized about this that he could not continue with filming for 2 weeks.
