  • I´ve heard a lot of "Kathys song" covers, but this is by far the best :o) Have a good one. Skjalg from Norway

  • Simon, you need your Garfunkel... Also your voice and playing deserves a much better mic/recording equipment. Awesome work.

  • Now you know why you waste your time...awesome...thank you!

  • Very sweet and smooth, makes my soul dance in a vals. Thanks for your performance. regards from spain,

    maria

  • incredible technique with the right hand picking.very thought provoking........

  • @mikebloomfirld66

Thanks, Mike. It's actually very easy to play! Just rotten difficult to sing!! :-)

I worked this out by listening to Eva Cassidy's interpretation; her music is inspirational,

  • hi, you play so well, this is the best version of all covers i heard....i am dying to learn this song...thanks for posting

  • great cover. I love the song too. Soild right hand technique. You've mastered the rambling nature of the tune.

  • Hands down ! one of the best covers I've heard.

Singing and instrumentals were both excellent. Thank you for

the countless hours of work and practice required to deliver this level of music.

Your efforts are very much appreciated. RPR

  • @RunPaulRun

Many thanks! I loved watching the Soggy Bottom Boys video!!! :-)

    Regards.

    Alan.

  • Lovely. I listened to a few versions of Kathy's song online, but yours was the one I liked best! :)

  • beautiful!

  • i really enjoyed this one:), great job! wonderful song, and i love your voice.

is there somehow you can perhaps tab this one for me? i would really like to play it like you do

  • You definitely have a great talent for the guitar and an excellent voice. However, I feel that the acoustics of the room you are recording in (kitchen?) are lending a 'harsh' effect to your voice.

I would love to hear you do a 'softer' recording of this great song.

  • siempre regreso a escuchar tu maravilla de version amigo...

    felicidades, como siempre

    Abrazos

    Neryg

  • Muchas gracias, mi amigo.

    Usted es muy amable.

    Alan.

  • Excellent. Great song. You do it very well. Smooth voice.

  • Thanks, trsh01.

We owe so much to Eva for revitalising and re-presenting these classic songs.

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • beautiful. I'm impressed.

  • superb! lovely version, wish i could sing and play at the same time, just freeze up when i try, will stick to listening to guys like you who do it so well. your fylde looks beautiful! how long have you had it? i have a fylde goodfellow that i have owned for fifteen years, cant do her justice, but listening to your playing does give me inspiration!thanks

  • you have such a warm voice... i loved it congrats !!

  • Great voice, sung and played beautifully. I liked the phrasing, which is close to Paul Simon's original recording. As much as I love Eva Cassidy, I prefer your version. Thank you.

  • fab!

  • very nice indeed enjoyed it and thanks regards tommy

  • Why this is a good video: Well sung, beautifully performed, a truly outstanding guitar--love that tone--a well lit room, and finally camera work that focuses on the chording and fingering in such a way that we can use this as a tutorial. You bet I'll be checking out your other vids!

  • this truly warmed my heart.

  • Xthechaser, I am honered . . . with all these trendy young bands around that you actually liked my S&G. :-)

    Thanks.

    Alan.

  • Wonderful version of Kathy's Song. It's definitely one of my favourite S&G songs and you did an amazing job of it! Lovely singing and playing! Nice reverb too!

  • Many thanks, azdv.

Comments like yours make it all worthwhile!

    Much appreciated.

    Alan.

  • beautiful playing.. lovely plaintive singing of it.. gorgeous version m8!

  • Many thanks, kaseryn.

Nice to listen to the few different interpretations you have as favourites on your own page.

    Cheers.

    Alan.

  • Many thanks, kaseryn.

Sorry for the tardy reply . . . been horribly busy lately! :-)

    Cheers.

    Alan.

    FANTACTIC x

  • Nicely done...

  • Amazing.....such a lovely version. how about a slow finger picking video? beautiful voice.........

  • your voice sounds so much like Garfunkels on this dvd i have of them. yours is definitely the best cover of this song iv seen so far. i truly enjoyed it

  • Thanks, nugbutt.

Truth is; I cringe listening to it . . must do better next time! :-)

    Cheers.

    Alan.

  • I honestly think your singing was the best i heard out of the other covers. I'm the same way with my singing though I'm a little too self critical of my own voice. (which is why i only have two videos with me singing in them) but you sound great and if you have the time listen to simon and garfunkel playing live at maddison square garden around 2003 or 2004. your voice sounds remarkably similar to garfunkels when they play kathy"s song

  • Very nice playing. I love the Eva Cassidy version too.

  • Thanks, acoustic61.

Enjoyed listening to your own favourite tracks: Katie Melua etc.

    Alan.

  • much applause......

  • Really impressive. Makes me want to learn these songs you play.

  • Hi, Kaminski.

Many thanks. Btw, I always wanted to play heavy metal during my ill-spent youth!

    :-)

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • nice guitar too

  • Thanks, Moonshack.

I'm lucky to have such a nice guitar; it does play beautifully. Although, you have a lovely recording studio, I'd say!

    Best wishes. :-)

    Alan.

  • wooooow. that's real real good playin and singin

  • Ganz toller song!!

  • This is a fantastic cover, I really enjoyed listening to it.

    Cool

  • Cheers, Jonathan.

Much appreciated. I've enjoyed listening to your own songs too.

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • FAAAAAAAAARRRR and away the best cover of this song...Absolutely brilliant 10/10....I look forward to seeing more of your cover versions.

  • Thanks again, kleckshexe.

    Alan.

  • Many thanks, Carlrayb.

  • Just started playng guitar about a year ago. this is the next one on my to do list. WELL DONE!!

How long have you been playing?

    Sounds great!

  • Hi, burner.

Well done you too for getting stuck in to guitar playing. I've been playing for 32 years. However, I started on classical, practiced every hour that God sent, and peaked after about 3 years! Been sliding downhill ever since! If you want to use my own arrangement (written in music), please let me know your email address and I'll forward it on to you.

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • Hi, Duncan.

    Thanks for your comments.

You're right, Fylde Guitars started up on the Blackpool coast, but these days are based up in Penrith.

    Cheers, mate.

    Alan.

  • Felicitaciones Alan por esta excelente version de Kathy´s song, tu voz y la guitarra son espectaculares...

    Transmites mucho sentimiento cuando cantas

    Desde Buenos Aires - Argentina

    Nery

  • Muchas gracias, Nery.

    Su son muy amables.

Veo que han añadido recientemente muchos videos. Bravo maestro. Buena calidad y también una excelente voz.

    Mis mejores deseos, de Inglaterra.

    Alan. :-)

  • Gracias por tus palabras Alan

    Saludos

  • Excellent!!!! And this guitar is outstanding. Thanks for sharing.

  • Nice work.

  • someone told me your version was better than mine.. I guess what; I agree :P

  • Hi, Accoustic77.

:-) That comment made me laugh, thanks.

Your own songs are nice to listen to also. All depends who's listening I guess.

    Very best wishes.

    Alan.

  • Isnt it a pleasure to be able to play something as beautiful as that song is...and not only play it - but pretty much do it to perfection. Well done.

  • Thanks, kitchenstairs.

Yes, Kathy's Song is lovely to play; it falls under the fingers just nicely...it's a bit of a beggar to sing though! :-)

    Regards.

    Alan.

  • hi i just found this and i thaught you were fantastic:)

i love the song and i am a budding guitarist myself do you know where i could get the tabs for this?

    keep it up sheer brilliance

  • Wow, this is a wonderful cover of Kathy's Song. You play it perfectly and you have a beautiful voice: very Art Garfunkel-esque!

  • Hi, oblyvia6.

You're much too kind, but very much appreciated all the same. :-)

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • good shot

I play it to but my voice is too low.

    astalavista

  • Hi, locarnaud.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Yes, it's a difficult song to sing with on the guitar unless first you have the operation! :-)

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • Definitely the closest sound to Art and Paul that I have heard yet. Great Job.

  • that was a great version, friend. in a great key too! your guitar is gorgeous. please enlighten me on what it is, if you wouldnt mind. Ive been looking for a guitar like that for months now, and i think thats 'the one' hehe

    yours faithfully, watcheruss

  • U sings very well. I'll add this video to my favorites.

  • Beautiful! :) You have an amazing singing voice. Greetings from Helsinki. Just been watching this here on train speeding north. This goes so well watching the scenery passing by...

    Sam

  • Hi, Sam/cognosc.

Thanks for your comments. If you're still travelling, have a safe journey! :-)

Perhaps I should've recorded Paul Simon's 'Homeward Bound' instead. Keep programming like 'buggery'.. :-)

    Regards.

    Alan.

  • Yes I did, Dan. It's funny how we can all present the same tune so differently, each with their own unique qualities.

    Cheers, mate.

    Alan.

  • Excellent rendition. Your voice surpasses Paul Simon's. Your guitar playing is phenominal!

  • Thanks, Keygain...you're much too complimentary! For me, Eva Cassidy produced the definitive version of this song.

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • I'd like to translate into grammatical english my previous post: Your songs are great, Alan; thanks for posting them.

    Cheers

  • Thanks for that, Bro.

Sorry for having to disable to 'Text Posting' on some videos, but they were attracting too many 'sillies'. :-)

    Kind regards.

    Alan.

  • Hi Alan: I'd to add my appreciation to those who've expressed similar sentiments about your song postings. It's too bad about the unwanted adverts that have caused you to disable comments on some songs, but that shows that you've become popular and "arrived" on youtube.

  • Alan:

Wonderful! I was captivated by your playing (what a beautiful guitar!), and then you started singing ... awesome! Someone else compared your voice to Phil Collins'. I had the same impression.

    Super job! Keep playing! :-)

    Tim

  • Hi, Tim. Thanks for that. Phil Collins eh? I don't suppose I compared so favourably! :-)

Seriously, you're very kind, thanks. Actually, I watched Phil Collins just a couple of nights ago playing the part of Buster Edwards, one of the 'Great Train Robbers'. He's a talented man.

    Cheers. Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • I thought I was pretty close to the original, but your version has exactly that feeling this song requires!

  • Thanks, Acoustix.

I really owe it to the Eva Cassidy version of this song. I was able to listen to her very clear performance and pick out the notes. We owe a lot to Eva!

    Kind regards.

    Alan.

  • Outstanding interpretation, Salixarbour! The warmth of your voice and the sound of your guitar are harmonizing perfectly with the text and music of this wonderful S&G song. I like it very much. Greetings from Germany!

  • Many thanks, mondi.

    Alan. :-)

  • really good , i'm playing guitar myself and i do singing, so i can justice this piece and i think it's just right. everything is in pace and sounds harmonic. if ur voice was kinda stronger it would be quite similar to Phil Collins :-)

  • Thanks, bloodmonk.

As a singer/guitarist yourself you'll appreciate how some songs can be so very difficult to perform...and this one is no exception!

    Kind regards.

    Alan.

  • this is an amazing rendition of the song. you play it as if you wrote it yourself, and you can tell there is a deep connection between yourself and the song. I am blown away by both your voice and the amazing tone of the guitar and the way you play it. great work! keep it up.

    spencer

  • Many thanks, Spencer, you're very kind.

    Cheers.

    Alan :-)

  • wow. amazing. and beautiful sounding and looking guitar!; well done. youve got yourself an exceptional singing voice as well... leaves me speechless really. extremely, extremely , extremely well done

    -amanda

  • Hi again, Amanda. Just responded to your comments on my version of 'Streets of London'.

All I can say is thanks immensely for your overwhelming compliments. It's nice know that you enjoyed listening.

Many thanks and a very Merry Christmas.

    Alan.

  • You have probably been playin for years with you woman on your case but keep it up man your great.

  • really good voice u got m8!

  • You're so right ! It's just awesome !! Keep playing salixarbour :D

  • Just listening to Kathy's song played very beautifully...awesome confidence and relaxed playing.

I dont know how you got the Tommy Emmanuel clips...?!

  • Hi again, kiwistopher. You're very kind, cheers. Maybe YouTube's going screwy but it has Tommy Emmanual as among your favourites?!

:-) I read in the mags a few years back that he's from Oz...I'm very impressed with his style and openness.

    Cheers, mate.

    Alan.

  • You did a fine, emotional rendition of this song. I think Eva Cassidy would like your version. I hope you have seen Eva's full version of this song which I posted recently.

  • Thanks, Joner888. Ah, the wonderful Eva. Who can compare? My own version is of course heavily based on her's. In fact, many of my songs over the past several years have been inspired by her work. What a genius! Such a cruel injustice that she was taken so young.

    Kind regards.

    Alan.

  • Yes, great voice and song!!! (I regret a recent comment!) Bless!

  • This is gorgeous. I love this song and you really do it more than justice. Thanks for making me exceedingly jealous! I'm going to have a listen to your others now :)

  • Thanks, doodlebugAmy.

It pleases me that you like Rufus Wainwright too; we were mesmerised by a live performance of 'Oh What a World' a year or so back, and immediately rushed out and bought a couple of his albums! :-)

    Cheers.

    Alan.

  • DUDE YOU ARE AWSOME! LOVE TOO SEE YOU DO SOME DAN FOGELBERG ,NICK DRAKE<OLD STUFF MICHAL MURPHEY ect..

  • Thanks, BrokenArrow.

If only there were more hours in the day...I love Nick Drake! Enjoyed looking through your own favourites; Carly Simon's very original arrangements are great to listen to.

    Regards.

    Alan.

  • OH YES YES YES!!! You captured this song BEAUTIFULLY!!! Your voice is so breathy and lovely

    Well done! 5 stars

  • Cheers, FritleyFrisp...you're both very kind...that's the first time my asthma's been described as 'breathy' :-)

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • From one asthma sufferer to another, you are my brother

  • well done man!!

  • this is a truly beautiful version of this song....well done!!

  • From one musician to another...thank you, onlineangel. Your arrangement of Kathy's Song is very original...well done. Could've used that pick for an original song of your own?

    Kind regards.

    Alan.

  • simply fantastic.

  • Brilliant...... i was totally mesmerised all the way through that !! That was beautiful.

  • Cheers, Wm. Always nice to view someone's too (your own that is). It's a really difficult song to sing isn't it!?

    Regards,

    Alan.

  • Go for it, spaceman!!! It's really not that difficult...just takes time and practice. Send me your email address and I'll send you my arrangement...written in music though I'm afraid. :-)

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • Hi, aboutabear. I have this is on good old vinyl...Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits.

    Cheers.

    Alan.

  • Magnificent. Excellent job.

  • Very beatiful song...... I have tried to get the tabs for the fingerpicking many times, but in vain. Can you help me please?

  • Hi, Hustler. This is my own arrangement of Eva Cassidy's arrangement! I've written it down in 'proper' music. I can send this if you like. Let me know your email address.

    Cheers.

    Alan.

  • So kind of you! I have sent you a message with my E-mail address.

    Cheers

    Hustler

  • oh man i love this song and your performance.you are a talent my friend.good work!

  • Hi, fingerstyle...

I owe this this version to the very excellent Eva Cassidy.

    Cheers,

    Alan.

  • Very good! One of my favorite songs, done well.

  • Hi, Goldhat Mark! Had a nice little look over your website...nice and refreshing! I like your video favourites too. One day I'll find time to enjoy a few of them!!!

    Kind regards,

    Alan.

  • Hey! This is the nicest cover of K's song I've heard. Very smooth and lovely. Thanks

  • Thanks, conboyjohn. Hopefully some time in the future I'll be able to record a better version of this song.

I notice 'Fire & Rain' is in your own list of videos: when I get time in a few weeks time, I'm going to post that one too.

    Take care.

    Alan.

  • Cheers, Rocket Rob. I love your videos BTW particularly your Mom's 83rd b'day, and the 'Kiss my ###' vid. Nice to see that guided tour of your Ottawa locale and all that snow!

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • This is one of my favorite songs, your a great guitar player, well done my friend.

    Rocket Rob

  • Your guitar is such good quality!! and your plucking is sooo clean!!!!! everything is put together so well!!!

  • Thanks, babytigress. The Fylde guitar is superb in quality & I'm very lucky to own it. However, I did start learning on something akin to a 5-string re-cycled wardrobe some 30 years ago. :-)

    Best wishes.

    Alan.

  • round of aplause...very nice very nice!!!! i really like your version.....

  • Cheers, wowiejunior. My tributes go to Eva Cassidy, as it is her lovely clear guitar playing that helped me 'hear' how to play this piece.

    Many thanks.

    Alan.

  • Great job. I've always loved this song!!

  • Thanks, Undergroundkween. This song holds many memories for me.

    Cheers.

    Alan.

  • Nice work Alan :)

  • Cheers, Ian. Many Thanks.

    Alan.

  • I've played Kathy's song since the early 1970's and heard Eva Cassidy's version on the movie soundtrack: Maid in Manhattan... was amazed. Your rendition is excellent. Thank you so much for the clear pics of your hands while playing.

  • Thanks, ok2rest! I love your own choice of favourite videos, in particular 'Matt Robinson'. I must get myself 'plugged in' for an improved sound.

    Kind regards, :-)

    Alan.

  • very very nice love this song both Paul and Eva Paul is obvious;ly the better player. Yours is brilliant. Check out mine.Jimmy

  • Thanks for your kind words, Jimmynig. Although this performance does fall way below my expectations. Hopefully resub it sometime in the future.

    Cheers.

    Alan.

  • I play guitar myself, but i'm not extremely god, althugh I know a couple of songs. But I REALLY want to learn this song..any tips?;)

  • Hi, again. I'll search out my music for Kathy's Song and email this to you. This is a couple of pages of 'real music' I'm afraid, and NOT tab, which I worked out by listening to Eva. I think it's accurate...well this is it played in my video! :-)

If you visit my Youtube page, you can email your own email address to me, then I can send you some jpgs.

My tips: practice, practice & more practice ... we've all got only 10 fingers!!

    Alan.

  • I think Eva's version of this song is so much better. Both when it comes to the guitar play and voice..

  • I agree, KarpeDizzmLizzm. I've learned so much from listening to how Eva played her songs. Her guitar playing/arrangements are so attractive, and her voice is beyond compare. My few 'Eva' songs are just my little 'thankyous' to her genius.

    Regards, Alan Lowe-Jones (salixarbour).

  • Beautiful job. Your vocal reminds me of what it would sound like if Garfunkel had sang it. No bathrobe tho...so gotta take back one star. ;)

  • great job!!

  • Excellent. Thank you!

  • beautiful cover mate,if i had half your talent i'd be a happy man.

  • Thanks, steptoe69/John, but it's horses for courses: just listened to your excellent voice again and your cover of Coldplay's 'The Scientist'...I couldn't produce your sound. :-)

    Cheers, mate. Alan.

  • Me too Steptoe, although having watched some of your videos you are not short of talent. I just hope Alan plays his own song, which for me is blinding.(He knows which one I mean:-)
