The music industry is often more interested in capitalizing on America's musical heritage than celebrating it. Although the two can co-exist, industry executives found it more profitable to co-opt a sound and cross it over to a larger, more affluent audience. I'm sure these artist's could empathize with the frustration of being left out of the American dream or played out in it's pursuit.
This would have been a fun concert to go to. Rufus Thomas calls everyone down to the field to dance to "The Funky Chicken" and everybody's just dancing. Future Soul Train in the stadium. This song works for the footage. Thanks.
The concert was held at the Los Angeles Coliseum on August 20, 1972, and organized by Memphis's Stax Records to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Watts riots. <---Stax put out so much great music.
@Telepathy1 You know, I don't think a lot of people know about this concert. In fact, I can't remember how your video came up but I love it. The original song was written by Ashford and Simpson, but I think Marlena did it better but there's more lyrics. This remix uses just the chorus but it works so well with. Like at 1:23 the band is clapping in time. I'm a girl, but even this girl's thighs look good. 0:47. Diana Ross at 1:11. I read that tickets were $1.00.
@Grendelmonster8u Yeah- I chose this version because it synched up so well with the video and it is also a tasteful remix. Marlena is still out there performing live. Last I heard she was bouncing around Europe a bit. I'd buy that for a dollar... and quite a few more...
@Telepathy1 So *you* put the music to the video. 01:22 really syncs up. A bunch of people's clapping syncs up, in fact. I'm impressed...great choice of music for this footage.
I've listened to her whole song which was written by Ashford & Simpson, but her cover of it did the best. The 5th Dimension did it too, but I think Marlena's vocals are cool.
@Telepathy1 Thing is too, the Watts Riots were really awful. Racial & economic tension exploded. So it's nice to see a concert where everyone is just having fun. The other ironic thing is that Stax records put out all this great soul, funk, blues music, including the great Otis Redding. The record company was founded by two white guys. It's the warped irony of America's musical heritage vs. discrimination. There aren't many white people here, but white people covered Rufus Thomas. It was warped
