LOVE hearing these at night. I believe we have a pair nesting across the road because I hear these calls every summer. The calls are always the same though as if the same male/female. But sometimes I see two.
To hear the sound that I'm talking about, see my video at piper1233. Ignore the bird on the light pole, I was positioning the phone mic for better sound clarity.
To hear the sound I'm talking about, check out my video at piper1233. Ignore the bird on the light pole, I was just positioning the phone mic for better sound clarity.
When I lived back in New Hampshire, we used to hear this every night at around 10pm during the mating season of this bird. Really really creepy sound, but so cool at the same time. Makes me want to move back =\
We heard these at dusk when camping. Had never heard them before and took us until night 2 to figure out what was making the sound. It was a bit scary at first; sounded like someone screaming!
I had a pair living in my backyard. They'd always sing before it rained or snowed. Mockingbirds are waaay creepier at 2 a.m. I had some that whistled like people right outside my window.
Talk about a haunting sound. Here in the Piedmont area of North Carolina, we hear Barred Owl calls on a relatively regular basis. But no matter how often a I hear that mournful cry, it always leaves me in awe. Man has nothing on nature.
Thank you for posting. I have a pair that live in my woods on and off throughout the year. I will be inside with all doors and windows closed and you can still hear them calling back and forth to each other at night.
I have this kind owl in the woods next to my house...I recognize the call....I LOVE listening to them... I think there is a pair of them...lots of calling coming from the woods....like they are talking to one another . I live in Ocala, Florida...in a sub ....so I think it is VERY special to have these birds here...I LOVE listening to them
Saw one early this last summer down in a wooded hollow. Intimidating and big as hell, and it wasn't afraid of me. If I had heard this sound I'd crapped myself silly.
I live in Summerville, SC- a Charleston suburb and I have been hearing this almost every night lately. We live in a subdivision, not out in the country. At first it was just the "who cooks for you?" at first, then a bunch of raucous screeching. I thought we had chimpanzees in the trees!
I've got at least pair in the preserve behind my home. I wish I could see them (but it's always dark (;-D), and they are up on a high ridge) They are clearly calling to one another (or at each other) but I wonder- I usually only hear them from mid-Spring to mid-Summer just beyond dusk and never in the winter. I'm sure they're not migratory, why do they get so "quiet"?
That goes on every night here in East Texas. I tried sleeping out on the upstairs porch. One perched on a branch over my head and cut loose, All God's critters are cool.
My husband and I were woken up last night by two of these suckers sitting in the tree outside our bedroom window. It was a very cool experience to listen to them!
I've been combing the net trying to match this sound with what type of owl it was and I'm glad I finally found it!
I was trying to imitate their calls out on my roof one night, and evidently I was very successful as the next thing I knew I had a barred owl- could not see as it was too dark, so close to me making wild insane woman threatening sounds, I nearly jumped out of my skin, I went in the house, and decided if I did that again I want to have a lacrosse helmet on.
Thank you for sharing this information. I confirmed my neighbor is a beautiful Barred Owl. I have seen him/her a number of times as I walk out the driveway. He will fly by and perch on a nearby limb to check my dog and me as we walk out for the mail.
Is the hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo hwah a sort of warning or challenge sometimes? I used it to answer back to barred owls a few times, and it seemed like it made them stop answering.
Great vid and nicely done. If you weren't familiar with the varying calls that a barred owl makes and were to be awakened in your tent in the dead of night by a couple of them, it just might be reason enough to 'hold it' until dawn.
My mom and I saw a barred owl one night as we were coming home from Murray. It was sitting on a post in our yard. We didn't want to get out because we were afraid we would scare it away. It was so beautiful. Those calls sound like goblins laughing. I have a really vivid imagination! :)
I just heard this outside but didnt see it and it scared the living day lights out of me. I was building a fort in the woods and I got SO SCARED. When I started hammering it did it. Then I did the noise back and I guess I scared it. If I knew what it was I would have went looking for it.
One of these flew through our screened in porch tonight, there is nothing like trying to open the door to let it out while avoiding a massive bird to the face.
The only other bird that's scarier sounding is the loon. Trust me.. it will make the hair on your arms stand up if you're alone in the woods at night.
