I disagree on 2 points: The CPU cooler and the midi case. The Intel retail CPU cooler can cover office purposes only, and in general, it comes as a marketing strategy. So, you should buy at least say a Zalman CNPS9700 LED (low price), or a good Thermalright / Scythe / Noctua (more expensive). The case isn't enough for gaming purposes, I would like a maxi type, so you would have more air flow, more space, and less heat. The mobo is good. These types of mobos may be also "Ubuntu linux ready".
what if i were to buy a factory computer from a store, newer model, and then upgraded certain parts? because im looking for a computer for gaming but only certain games like rpgs. I see alot of people who build their own rigs for gaming but its usually over 1000 bucks. I dont necessarily need alot of power or flash i just want it to be able to play without any problems? any suggestions for pre built computers or good computers to upgrade?
@Mackfuu222 That would be an expensive way to do it. You'd be better off building one from scratch or buying a barebones bundle and then adding what you need to that.
@Mackfuu222 This is not a good idea. Brand PCs are clearly targeting companies, offices and organizations, which buy them in specific quantities with specific deals in price, service etc. They also targeting some home users who even don't know many things about PCs (say an accountant, an artist, a musician, a civil engineer, a lawyer, and so on), many of them are turned to Mac, especially graphists and sound engineers. Brand PCs are not easily upgradeable, not overclockable, they have (continued
@Mackfuu222 (continued), they have some bad proprietary patents at their case, power supply, specific air cooling solutions (even with an air pipe driven system). In general, they are for office use. They have proprietary connections between mobo / case, and specific power supply dimensions. Also, their price comes at...a price. What I mean? how did you like the motherboard? im thinking of getting it today after my last one fried and i dont have the money to upgrade to DDR3 + CPU + motherboard
Im a noob planning on building my first computer. i like how you tested the motherboard before putting everything, how were you able to turn it on? does the motherboard have a power button?
@rayo1988 Hi, there's a power header on the motherboard that you'll eventually attach the PC case power button wire to (check the mobo documentation to locate it - Just use a ballpoint pen or a screwdriver to short the two prongs. You can see me do this in the video just before It powers up for the first time.
How much was your windows 7? Have you eve ever thought of Ubuntu 10.4 as another option. Nice video by the way. And you have encouraged me to do the same. But I would use UBUNTU as I am using now, and it would certainly save the cash.
@englishmovielover I used the Windows 7 release candidate for this build. Yes, I've used various Linux distros including Ubuntu and Kubuntu etc but I've settled on Linux Mint :)
for less than 300$ my 7 years old athlon xp 3200+, 1gb pc3200 with sata hdd and geforce fx6200... is now a phenom x4 955 b.e., 2gb pc10600 with ati hd4200. I know ati hd4850 is a little bit better than my hd4200 but do you think that rebuilding my old computer is a better choice than building a brand new expensive Q6400?
real mess inside the case.. Also i do not suggest using a case without cable management holes anymore. CoolerMaster CM690 II Advanced is probably the best bang for you buck at the moment.
Very nice indeed although sometimes it does not always go so smoothly when you build your own! I just finished building my son a gaming rig and had nothing but trouble. Firstly I had to RMA motherboard and then the CPU Phenom II X 4 955. Then the Coolmaster V8 heatsink fan would not turn. Once I got it going I realised I could not reach the 8 pin power connection cause of the V8,had to unistall it all. Then loading Window 7 it could not locate my network hardware. Got there in the end though
@Sparta2310 I choosed the same processor to rebuild my computer too, I hope it will not like yours, and I hope I didnt purchased your rma motherboard :P
Not a bad looking build, I have the exact same mouse and keyboard in my setup, I went AMD though, more for your money that way, Im a poor bastard :P lol
i have a problem i bought the same motherboard as you and a invidia 9500 graphics card along with a new heatsync and psu and we plugged everything in correctly and when we powered the pc on theres no signal to the moniter and there is no beep for the bios the fans are running fine and the motherboard light is on what are we dong wrong please help. all hardware is fresh from yesterday besides the ram but the ram worked fine yesterday
I'm a sucker for classical music and I can always listen to Cannon in D. Nice build by the way and watching a time lapse was fun. I've ordered my new tower and components a few days ago and I'm stoked. The last time I build a system from the ground up was in 2002/2003!
@TheWazanabe Do you mean cost? When I bought the components for this build, I think I paid just over £40 for 4GB. It's more than double that now - DDR3 has taken off. I contacted some suppliers and retailers to find out why and was told that DDR2 is more expensive to manufacture now..

great choice in music. great video, just one thing u might should look back into later. cable management, even tho ive seen way worse but just a consideration other then that great overall im planning on getting this mobo board for my old q6600
@thore022 Yeah, I dealt with that after the build. I didn't bother to include it in the final edit as I didn't record any decent footage of the cable management.
great video man antec 300 is a fun case to work with, do you use this pc for gaming? I have a amd 4200+ @ 3.0ghz with a ati 5770 that I play games on it's not the newest or greatest but it plays the games I play, and that's all I need. will you be doing more builds like this?
