  • I love the sound of his guitar. So much pain

  • Wouldn't it suck to have led in your belly?

  • love this, did not realize Manfred Man was doing a cover. Goddamn, Leadbelly was an amazing musician.

  • Dr. Ron Paul 2012

  • I am starting to be annoyed by those "I am Xteen and everyone in my generation listens to crap music but I am super-awsome and listen to this old music so gimmie a few thumb-ups so I can feel like I am super cool and cultivated" comments. Get a life and a top hat.

  • when was this recording?

  • @CONHOLIO95 around 1938 or so

  • classic classic

  • This sounds like it was recorded in a pool hall... which is awesome.

  • I'm only 4 and I've been listening to leadbelly for 6 years while all my toddler friends listen to shitty music on Sprout and shit. Do I get an award?

  • @sk8rbuoi yes

  • You feel blues you don't hear it

  • what blues artist would you recommend to someone who is ignorant of the blues such as myself ? maybe leadbelly is an aquired tast

  • @nunyafunkinbizz SON HOUSE is my personal favorite, but theres not much hope for you if your not a fan of leadbelly, hes great.

  • @nunyafunkinbizz Try Stevie Ray Vaughan, he's very accessible to non-blues fans (because there's a good amount of rock in some of his songs). In particular, check out the songs Texas Flood and Pride and Joy. If those don't speak to you, then maybe the blues just aren't for you.

  • @chas987654 will check it out for sure ....thanx for the tip brother!

  • @nunyafunkinbizz Howlin Wolf is fairly easy to get into, at least as far as I'm concerned. His stuff is mostly electric. Listen to his songs Smokestack Lightning, Spoonful, and How Many More Years.

  • hey im a music lover and the lyrics to the song are great but that sounded like a drunken hobo lady with no talent. i mean come on could not even carry a tune it was horrible lead belly sound he was shot in the belly just before recording!

  • @nunyafunkinbizz thats pain in his voice, its part of blues.

  • @nunyafunkinbizz Your an idiot. An Idiot that deserves the worst. Go kill yourself.

  • @xxxxCallousxxxx deserves the worst? i think i just put myself threw exactly that the worst! as i allow my ears to be assaulted again! while writing this response. lol its just my opinion brotha! there are real things going on in this world reall horrors to humanity so if you insist on being so passionate about something let it be more that one mans opinion and taste for music k? take care! =)

  • @nunyafunkinbizz You've been watching too much 'reality' TV. That there is the sound of the blues. You'll pass through it on your musical journey at some point in the future, everyone does :)

  • Meh I like down in new orleans better

  • yeh im only 16 but i dont jus liston to this though i listen to like everything good

  • @TheNoobPube smae with me :)

  • ashamed to say that ive just discovered leadbelly, 48 years of missing out on a master

  • @phantompoet22 no matter how old u get, u always learn. So no shame needed. Just be glad you no know.

  • Music today appeals to the genitals rather than the soul, 17 and still proudly blasting this stuff

  • I just discovered true music

  • I think this one is original, but The Animals version is much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much better

  • @kojax98 I don't think anyone really knows "the original" version of this song. It actually dates back before Leadbelly. I think I heard somewhere that it was originally written about the Womens prison in New Orleans, which had a rising sun on the sign.

  • I like the woody guthrie version better. but this ones not bad

  • Anybody know who the singer is?

  • @IThinkISeeADoughnut Lead belly. It says in the title of the video...

  • Cobain introduced me to Leadbelly..... now.. I am HOOKED!!!!!!!!!!!! im 19 year old.... oh hey i know u dont care just saying tho.... =) cuz i think music of today was a bit more poppy and has lost of that Rock and Roll essence. its really sad....

  • Leadbelly himself wrote this as he says on some old tapes a friend of mine has ..He was born in the New Orleans area....Check it out ...

  • So I take it the Animals song is a cover of this? Never heard of this guy. He may have gotten screwed out of a hit, even though the Animals changed most of the lyrics.

  • @DrewRockss no one knows who wrote the song originally.

  • @DrewRockss It's a traditional song, meaning it's so old no can trace back to the original writer. It's been a blues and folk standard for a long time.

  • @mashui99 Oh okay. I never knew that.

  • @DrewRockss Good song though, and the Animals did a great version of it

  • @DrewRockss dylan stole the arrangment from some other folk singer then the animals did it that way.

  • I want my daddy's records!

  • Im 18, while everyone that I know is listening to shitty music I take the time to listen to Leadbelly albums that are older than my parents themselves. My point? Don't give up on the new generation, most of people my age listen to shit, but there's a few of us out there that value great music. Leadbelly will never be left in the past.

  • @raikou6 dont give up on new music either :)

  • @raikou6 I am the exact same. Only I'm 19. It's pretty lonely, though, I must say. When all of my friends are awkwardly silent as I play all of my music when they come over to my place. But I would never trade my music taste for the world.

  • @bstickel92 I get my friends to like this all it takes is a couple of bowls of good shit while this song is in the back people tend to enjoy it :p

  • @bstickel92 !!Yes When i was your age my friends would politely TRY to get into most of what i played.Even when they liked Yes & the Doors and i'd play King Crimson & the Stooges.Or i'd play Born under a Bad Sign by Hendrix and they'd ask for Foxy Lady.'Played Crossroads by Robert Johnson, they asked for (ugh)Eric Clapton...& When i got into punkrock, they thought i'd lost my mind! ...YOU WILL PREVAIL! There's an endless supply of great music & YOU will enlighten many in your life.

  • @bstickel92 You and I would get along well.

  • @bstickel92 Amen! If not for Cobain I would have never found Leadbelly! I, too, listen to the music that I choose to, not what's in ..And of course Out! and forgotten in a couple years at best! I applaude you on being "Yourself!" and at such a young age. Your post reminds me of a quote I picked up ..?? Somewhere? "You were born an 'Original', Don't die a 'Copy'! I'm glad, and I agree with your post, .. Yes, there are some of us who will remain "Originals!" .. take care!

  • @bstickel92 you hang out with some pretty unfun people, pal.

  • @bstickel92 Good for you. You should NEVER cave to the haters when it comes to the music that you love.

  • @bstickel92 Now you got the blues...

  • @bstickel92 No worries there man. I'm 19 too and it is the same way for me

  • @raikou6 i'm 16 and i agree

  • @raikou6 you do know there is good music out there, right.... Good modern music, it;s not exactly leadbelly. But guess what music evolves, into something good

  • @raikou6 i was just about to say the exact same thing

  • I would consider it torture to have to listen to this.

  • For Christ's sake stop the pointless arguing and LISTEN. It's good.

  • a book called "chasing the rising sun" suggests this song may trace back to 16th century england

  • there's a good book called "chasing the rising sun" that suggests this song may trace back to the 16th century england

  • @greatestxgift Also since stopping “perpetuating misinformation” is so important to you. Let’s start with the original person to sing this song in America and record it wasn’t Lead Belly it was Texas Alexander, recorded in 1927 for Okeh Records. Lead belly didn’t even record anything before 1934, and there’s no proof this is him playing the guitar since there is a women singing. So there I have helped in your quest to educate the internet.

  • @Zerothedog04 Of course that's Lead Belly playing guitar. This is from the Last Sessions and the woman singing is his wife Martha. Even if you didn't know that, if you are at all familiar with Lead Belly's music, you should have recognized his style AND his Stella 12-string! Both are unmistakable.

  • @cinbrian28 Thanks I did notice that after I posted I had the dates confused. @greatestxgift Congratulations you’re the second person to point that out and unlike the other person you decided to bring the douche bag. So do me a favor and stop perpetuating the douche bag attitude on YouTube, also thank you for pointing out my learning disability, I will make sure to write my posts in word and spell check in the future just for you buddy.

  • 112 ppl doesn't respect a true original

  • i wonder who the women singing is, leadbelly is playing the steel, bit no mention of the women singing that he's giving the cues to.

  • Its funny people think Bob Dylan wrote this, he clearly didn't.

  • @lithum2010 yeah expesally since the animals version was before his anyway.

  • @Zerothedog04 sorry but that's incorrect Dylan released his in 62, The Animals in 64...just sayin.

  • @Zerothedog04 I have no idea what "expesally" means but Bob Dylan definitely recorded his version of "House of the Rising Sun" before The Animals so please stop perpetuating misinformation on here.

  • Great song! As cool as it gets!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • awesome!

  • Dislike.

  • @Dato995 I dislike you.

  • @zander181846 No problem :)

  • I didn't know Bill Duke played guitar.

  • when was this recorded?

  • @thelimetownjack October 1948

  • You guys know this is his wofe singing right? You can hear him in the background telling her what to say.. and at the beginning he told her "this is the last time you have to sang it"

  • Whose better: Leadbelly or Robert Johnson?

  • So much mythology surrounding this guy.

  • Go to facebook, put blues songs links in pop crap pages like bieber, and write Justin biber unnamed song or new demo....da gals gonna get mad !!!!!

  • technically, it refers to a place most of them originated from....dumb fucks!

  • When you get permission to refer to someone as a "Niger" let me know...until then it's just latent -- or overt -- rascism -- couched in intellectual drivel...the same as referring to the town in Southern Illinois as "Karo" even though it's spelled Cairo...it's the not so secret code of the redneck white...and I know, I am from Illinois

  • The word 'niger' is of ancient Greek roots people.......

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, true, it is Latin for the 'color' black, but if you examine this through history the name of Niger is derogatory - it is a racial label put upon the African people in that part of north and west Africa by European colonists... The first feature to be called Niger was the river Niger, which runs North from Nigeria, into the nation of Niger... The river is not black

  • OK I HAVE HEARD SEVERAL VERSIONS OF THIS SONG I BELIEVE THE ORIGINAL ONE WAS ABOUT A GIRL WHO WORKS IN A WHORE HOUSE CALLED THE RISING SUN HER MOTHER WARNED HE A ABOUT IT AND NOW SHE WANTS 2 TELL HER BABY SISTER I LIKE 2 GO BACK HEAR WHER A SONG ORIGINATED FROM THANKS YOU TUBE

  • Enjoy

  • you have to have the ear for it...its good!!!!!!realy good.music now a day is to much show no sole but thats up to you.......

  • hehe i am very talented and open

  • When recorded, he'd have laughed if you told him 1.5 million people would hear it.

  • I think people should just stop bitching at each other and just enjoy some good music.

  • ...in other news, I love this song. I wanna see a cover of this version than the one by The Animals. Don't get me wrong, I love that one too, but this one can be just as epic for a blues solo!

  • @jesusfruit50 search youtube for tommy emmanuel; he also covers heartbreak hotel and the beatles

  • This is the earliest version that I have heard of this great song. I wonder if Leadbelly wrote it ?? btw, awesome version!

  • @jpr325 Nope, it was originally recorded by Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster in 1933, then Georgia Turner, Bert Martin, Daw Henson, and Roy Acuff each recorded their versions throughout the 30's, and then came Leadbelly's turn. Before it was a recorded, it was an old american folk song that was passed down verbally. It's origins are unknown.

  • @TheMottSlutz Thanks for the music history lesson, very interesting !

  • @TheMottSlutz

Texas Alexander recorded a version of this song in 1928 :)

  • whos singing this?

  • @Dartwith Leadbelly-it's in the description.

  • Odizzle10 needs to be set on fire

  • Kurt Cobain= Gstatus Leadbelly = OG status

  • I first heard about leadbelly off the nirvana unplugged mtv dvd.

  • Class,THE VERY BEST version of this song.

  • original magic!!

  • I always thought that "House of the Rising Sun" was an original song from The Animals, but this video made see what a blasphemy this tought was.

  • I FIRST FOUND OUT ABOUT LEADBELLY BY NIRVANA

  • @mikeanthony227 me too, made some epic songs!

  • @mikeanthony227 me too, man. Epic.

  • @mikeanthony227 What has more brains than Kurt Cobain?

    THE WALL BEHIND HIM!

  • @ThatDisembodiedVoice Come on man, not only is that joke not funny but also it's not even true. His head remained intact.

  • @ThatDisembodiedVoice They say brevity is the soul of wit, ergo your brain and your c*ck must be a riot. If by chance you ever become addicted to something, good luck, because clearly integrity and humanity are missing from that hole in your 'id' and no that is not an i.d. Freud.

  • @Shinobisms Mmmm, Pseudo-Psychological bullcrap

  • @ThatDisembodiedVoice Courtney's favorite Kurt joke i'm sure

  • Lolburgers neptunemetallica is an idiot also first I liked the animals version then the bob Dylan version but now fuck both of those

  • @Neptunemetaillica Uh pig-mentally abundant? I have never been called that nor do I want to be. Just African American is fine since blacks just can't be American. I don't mind being called black because I call white people WHITE!!! Screw politically correct with pig-mentally abundant that some BULL SHIT!!!!

  • It sounds like he's playing that guitar with his feet, or his nose.

  • hehe just turned 18

  • this song is about nawleens in pre-historical times. velociraptors there owned a whore house where they would trick other dinosaurs into playing strip poker and then kill and eat them. ohhh gawd i know, i'm one

  • its dat a 12 string on the picture??

  • @diegocostarica21 yes it is.

  • hmz can be the pretty girl next door or the woman of your dreams

  • It's funny how this song makes pseudo historians out of so many .

  • @RugbyDemon6789 and me, oh god are one

  • @RugbyDemon6789 im on the verge of giving your comment a thumbs up...but i don't know what pseudo means. i like the song the ( ^_^ )

  • @Blink41ColdRomance Pseudo is a prefix meaning "false, but having the appearance of, or pretending to be."

  • Translation:

There is a brothel in new orleans called the rising sun.

it has ruined many helpless girls, and has ruined me tooo.

If i had only listened to my mother, i would not be here today.

but i was younge and naive, and fell for a con mans trick. ( i followed him)

warn my sisters not to do what i did. Please curse the house called the rising sun.

Im going back to new orleans,( i might as well. ). My race is almost wiped out. Im going back, ( i give up).

    \

  • @Hersheyskisses4you On the last 2 verses, He wasnt saying his race was wiped out, he's saying he's about to die and won't go back to New Orleans alive.

  • Terrible..

  • @Tha2ndWimp WHAT!?

  • is THIS the person who wrote this?? ive gone from the rolling stones to the animals to this other bitch i just want to FUCKING KNOW

  • Comment removed

  • @TheSaucyAuto New Orleans in the 1600's? What the fuck are you talking about?

  • Comment removed

  • @tmlkrs ,,Alan Price of The Animals has claimed that the song was originally a sixteenth-century English folk song about a Soho brothel, and that English emigrants took the song to America where it was adapted to its later New Orleans setting." - Wikipedia (you can also see the source if you read the wikipedia article about house of the rising sun)

  • @tmlkrs I'm not sure what his original comment was, but I'm pretty sure this song was written long ago and the lyrics were changed once people settled in America. I could be mistaken, though.

  • @tmlkrs "Alan Price of The Animals has claimed that the song was originally a sixteenth-century English folk song about a Soho brothel, and that English emigrants took the song to America where it was adapted to its later New Orleans setting."

Knew I wasn't as misinformed as I thought I was.

  • @TheSaucyAuto wtf?

  • @mikey39977 It was written by some share-hand or slave working in the fields. And in response to the saucy auto, it was probably 1800's or so. New Orleans wasn't founded until 1718. Also, to whoever posted this video, do you know what leadbelly sounds like?

  • @11twsister Ah, thank you.

  • @mikey39977 No one WROTE it per say. You could have looked it up on wiki, or googled it. It's an old folk song.

  • @BillHicks420

This. Just like how Where did you sleep last night, and I believe Black Betty too. They were good songs that were around for ages, and Leadbelly had a good enough ear to realize how good they were.

  • So who's singing here? Sure isn't Leadbelly...

  • Recording is shit ... i'm sure it was taken by i phone

  • As I am given to understand, the song is older that the city of New Orleans is officially.

  • subg88 the doors didnt do this song u knob...i have the whole discography..all 1388 songs...do ya research

  • @jimboooong

Sorry, I don't recalling stating the Doors covered this, nor does this page.

  • HEY GUYS DIDN'T THE ANIMALS DO THIS FIRAST

  • @callitacomeb10106 Nope. I don't think anyone knows who it's originaly by.

  • @emriederek

Just a though..but how does it benefit a musician that his song is sung by others who then make a whole lot of money from it..and the song becomes famous...meanwhile the originator remains poor and unknown?

  • Love me sone Lead Belly

  • lmao ummmm the singer of led belly is arlo guthries father and as far as i know he is white who ever is making the viddeos is just using old time picturs *not that it should relly matter about skin collor*

  • @brightfam1 what? woody guthrie? leadebellys name is huddie william ledbetter born in the late 1800's, woodie guthrie was a jewish folk singer born 30 years later. whaaaaaaaaat are you talking about?

  • I just noticed the whole in his guitar is lined up with the neck...whats with that? ...is that guitar broken or something?

  • @KurdtKobain09 That, my friend, is called a "sound hole".

  • @TheSaucyAuto don't continue to be a know-it-all after making a complete tit of your self so much you actually had to remove the comments.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheSaucyAuto You tard.

  • @apewillrise Yes, we get it. I'm a bit ignorant.

  • @RcEdits yup, dont be a dick about other peoples mistakes then. if you don't like it yourself don't do it to others!

  • Why is it whenever you whites watch black themed videos on you tube you people seem to always talk about nigger this and black this? why do you hate blacks so much? what have they done to your people?

  • i'm not trying to be racist... but i don't like this version.

  • Alright who wants to be a pal and tell me what the two top comments are about so I dont have to comment surf back 2 months to get caught up?

  • @M4ttyC4k3s I wouldn't bother. It's people confusing the colour of ones skin with music. Silly, really.

  • You americans - clearly you all STILL cant get over the black/white thing! The rest of the world looks at this clip and hears good music. You all see a racial war.

  • @PeterHBne1 you're an idiot for assuming they're all americans. Also you're an idiot for citing the rest of the world as a unit with a single idea, you're threshold for knowledge is quite low, and you have the slightest cognitive recorse

  • @orangebluemango You spelt recourse wrong (go back to school). Your reply nose dives, Mr Smarty-Pants. And I'd bet the house I live in they WERE all americans.

  • @PeterHBne1 you're an idiot, you're only argument is a simple typo. I wouldn't bet anything because if you're not from the U.S., I'm almost certain your house is shitty.
