I seriously don't get the misunderstanding... The 6 counties that make up NI are still under British rule. The British Isles are, geographically, the collection of islands surrounding the one larger Island. It's similar to the Americas... made up of different countries, seperate governments but a part of the same land mass. People in the Republic (South) of Ireland are Irish. It's not rocket science o_O
@Killerb144 lol what are u about ofcourse every one who lives on the british isles is British because they all have British passports and england Wales and Scotland arnt ruled by England because they have there own parliament and the reason there all togeather is why it's called the united kingdom but to be honest there's probaly more people from other countries living in the uk illegally because they think it's the land of opportunity and most ileagal imigeants get to live in the uk even when
no see im born in n.ireland and i well never call my self british or n.irish i will only call my self irish .this might seem strange considering im born in n.ireland witch is in britian but because of my history im irish mainly because im catholic and my ancesters where irish the gay fucking british came over to ireland and killed or men raped or wemon and hurt or children people will disagree but my passport proves that im irish not british
I'm Welsh and I speak Welsh fluently as my first language. I would HATE to be called british, but I hate to admit that I am because we hate to be coupled with the english. The Welsh do NOT hate the Scottish, well not a lot anyway. We hate the english as much as the Scottish do, maybe even more because of our history (they stole our independence....) Many Welsh people would agree, especially Welsh speaking ones, and I am sure that many Scottish people feel the same.
i think your pretty spot on in this video me personally i consider myself English but i do consider myself British to and in general i feel that the people in this country that don't consider themselves British as well as the other parts of our country are usually nationalists that want separation who are thankfully in the minority .
It refers to a national entity. Britain became Britain from the act of Union in 1707. This united the previously Indepedent Kingdoms of Scotland and England. (Hence the other term 'United Kingdom'). Wales had been incorporated as a principality into the 'English Crown' in the 1200's by the new Norman rulers.
Wales was according principality and not nation status because (inluike Scotland) there simply was no previously independent Welsh nation. There were several small interwarring tribal areas. The name Wales/Welsh comes from the old Anglo Saxon which described people who spoke a similar and alien language. (It means 'foreigner').
The modern Welsh name for Wales is Cymru. Which incidentally is also the name of the modern form of these old Brythonic languages.
"Old Brythonic languages" would also include Cornish (extinct, except for the Cornish language clubs) and Breton (spoken by about a quarter million people in the French province of Bretagne -- descended from the Britons who fled the Anglo-Saxon invasions.)
I'm Scottish, and I like being British as well. I don't like it when people call people British and only mean England, or say English and mean the whole of Britain, that's like soooo annoying!!!
Im Scottish and you could call us anything, Scottish, British ..you could call us French if you want, just as long as you NEVER refer to us as English....
im english ur a yank so how the fuk can u say anything u talk utter shit theres no such thing as british! u cnt define british coz it dunt exist! like theres no such thing as a british accent so why do all yanks say british accent thers no such thing! U DIK
Im scottish. When I play on xbox live i always here americans say to english guys 'Oh youv got a british accent. WTF. Britain cant have an accent. its got 4 countries.(Northern ireland although i think they should seperate) You cant really have four countries with countless accents, national and local. SHUT UP AMERICANS! Btw, not reffering to all americans, just those thatbsay 'British accent'. P.S Am Scottish an am proud ya bass! P.S.S Benny Harvey R.I.P
Welsh and british is one and the same! we are the native britons on these islands and i am proud to call myself welsh & british! also Those Celtic peoples who were part of the Roman empire at its greatest extent spoke p-Celtic languages, those most closely related to Welsh. In this sense the Welsh were the ones who inherited post-Roman Britain as the Empire retreated, encompassing most of the island of Britain south of the Antonine Wall (which is in the central belt of modern Scotland).
Having grown up partially in the UK, none of the people I have met minded being called British. Maybe it was by chance but that's how it goes. I guess it depends on your personality, cultural background or ethinicity as to how one prefers to be catagorized. Perhaps these things come down to Open and Closed mindedness where one is open to being called whatever as long as it isn't vividly racial and another is closed (avoiding) to being catagorized. Not everybody likes status-quo.
Incidentally - 'British' tends to be used amongst the ethnic minority groups to describe themselves, as they associate English/Scots/Welsh with the native peoples.
Hmmm. You've gotten it wrong about Northern Ireland - theyt ARE British, but some consider themselves Irish rather than British. Indeed, some of them carry Irish and British passports. "British" is an umbrella term that was predominently used until 1997. With devolution, 'British' is fast falling out of favour with the residents of the 4 countries, prefering to use the ACTUAL country designations. Me, I'm English, prefer to be called that. My passport says otherwise. Nevermind.
Im Cymro, from Cymru. I feel British should correctly term someone whose roots originate within these Isles but I am uncomfortable with this as the description British has been bastardised as describing someone originating from a country colonized by the English. Bastardising British was a tool of English Aristocracy in brainwashing the colonized to fight wars and extend the Empire, continuing to rape & ethnically cleanse the planet. I am cymro (welsh), celt & a Briton like Scots,Irish & Manx.
But to answer the question, i'd prefer to be called English, even tho British would best describe me as i have English and Scottish ancestry and a tiny bit of Welsh from a way way back, but i was born in England and i consider myself English. but i wouldn't thro my toys out of my pram if i was called British. I guess maybe one of the reasons why i wouldnt be offended is because i dont feel that i've been oppressed by the UK.
Thank you very much for your answer. It was very informative and not the least bit offensive in my own humble opinion. You seem to have a very good grasp on the situation and I have total respect for your answer and viewpoint. Thank you.
I can see why people may get offended in Britain, it is a complex situation, it basically boils down to Identity.
The way i see it:
British can stir up ideas of British Empire, which alot of Scots and Welsh do not want to be apart of, some do but most dont. On the same note, alot of the English dont mind being British first and English second, spose the English being the larger in population can forget that they are apart of a bigger union. no offence if i got that wrong.
The Isles you refer to are geographically termed 'the British Isles' and this, whether the Irish like it or not, is a physical and geographical fact.
In my experience, most Scots prefer to be referred to as 'Scots', the people from Wales 'Welsh' and the English will generally refer to themselves as British (though now the English are become increasingly nationalistic because of perceived political injustices they feel undermines their identity.
I really dislike being called British. I'm from England, not the whole of Britain. You wouldn't call someone from Mexico an American because they're from the same group of islands would you? British to me seems like a lazy way of naming us collectively because some people don't want to differenciate between three diverse countries.
I'm from Scotland but im totally happy being british. I think the problem with people saying were all british is that most people assume british=english. In almost all american tv shows when people talk about british people they show a stereotypical view of an english person(usually a stuck up snob) which is not a good view of english people. There is no such thing as a british accent there is howevere a scottish accent, english accent, welsh accent and irish accent, northern ireland obv
You've got it bang wrong about Northern Ireland mate. The majority of them would consider themselves as very British. The nationalist community would consider themselves, but they're a very large minority. Look up Ulstermen.
Aye. It's been pointed out to me before, and I have accepted that I was wrong. It is kind of strange, though, because on a national level Ireland itself is hard to class. The UK considers it one of the British Isles, while the Republic of Ireland doesn't. It seems now that the most appropriate way to refer to the group is as 'The British Isles and Ireland.' I don't rightly know that it means that much either way. Irish is Irish, English is English, Scottish is Scottish, Welsh is Welsh. x
The islands of both Great Britain are in the British Isles. It doesn't mean they're British, it's just in an area known as the British Isles.
The Irish is Irish, English is English isn't that simple. A) Because we're all British whether we like it or not (except for those in the Republic of Ireland. B) It's down to how the individual views themself. As I commented previously, I am very proud to be British and that's a personal thing.
Aye, and I appreciate that. But to my understanding being British is not a political affiliation, it is a geographic designation. You aren't British because you are a member of one country or another, you are British because you were born within Britain. Anyone born ON the island of Great Britain is British whether they like it or not. Anyone born on the British Isles is British whether they like it or not. Whether Irish or British depends on whether or not Ireland is a British Isle. I think.
Anyone born in Great Britain or Northern Ireland is British like it or not and that lunclues that nationalist Irish wishing to united the Republic of Ireland with Ulster (Northern Ireland). The British isles thing is just a geographic region which has no baring on a persons nationality. Hope that helps mate.
@e3hammer the northern ireland which technically includes county donegal, cavan and monaghan would have a majority of irish citizens.. a few deluded irishmen here & there that think they are british means nothing.
Born in England - Half English, half Scottish (English Mum, Scottish Dad) and I am vehemently British. Only time I'm separate is when it's to do with sport.
i call my self English. i don't like being called British or European even though i am technically both. but i was born in England no where else in Britain or Europe. when there was the British Empire did all the countries call them selves British? there are even countries that have the Union Jack flag in their own flag, so do they call them selves British. i think you fin they don't even thought they are ruled by the same queen as Britain itself and also use the Union Jack flag
Oh and one thing, when I was looking down at the older comments from 2 months ago, there was something about knife crime and gangs.
Yeah, too much of that stuff. One of my friends got stabbed in the chest, survived thank goodness. But knife crime is getting out of control. I don't know what the fuck Parliament are doing about it, probably nothing now since theres credit crunch.
I'm British, English. I don't mind people calling me "British" because it IS geographically correct like you said.
I don't get why some Scottish people don't want to be anexed with England/Wales/Northern Ireland. Its just dumb.
I also don't get why most British people don't like the idea of the European Union. Jesus, what the fuck is wrong with my countries' way of thinking...
british is offensive because of things like this;
when I was just in scotland, if you go to a castel there they tell you about how hard your forefathers fought to fight off the british invaders, the conquests, the death, the sieges, protecting your homeland, and then, oh snap, guess who's flag is flying on the flag pole...
I can accept British as a geographical term - relating to the island of Great Britain, a bit like Scandinavian relating to Scandinavia (Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden etc)
However it is not a national identity. When expressed as a national identity British is just the same as English.
In many ways Scotland has much more in common with our neighbours in Ireland and on the European continent than we ever will have with the English.
I agree, I also am English and don't think it's right that the laws to Govern the SEPERATE countries of Great Britain are made in England... I want english laws for england, scottish laws for scots, welsh for welsh , etc etc, let each country govern themselves, I hope other people agree?
Yes we are all technically british, but then again technically we're all european.. it's too vague a description,, ENGLISH SCOTTISH WELSH IRISH ... simple
I'm very happy being British. Britishness is slightly more inclusive than Englishness, but there is nothing wrong with being English either. British History is very distinct and different from European history, though we have a played a big part in that too.
by the way britain isnt an island, quite evidently you dont know much about England or us english people......... no we dont care about being called british but it is annoying that you dont know what makes up the UK
The UK and Britain are two separate things. It annoys me how many BRITISH people don't know the history, geography, or difference between the UK, Britain, or any of the other things.
I have become quite enlightened to the idiocy of human kind because of this video.
I can't believe you wrote this comment yourself! Ever heard of the pot calling the kettle black? You need to learn more, tea-towel boy. By the way, I'm British, born in England, living in Ireland (Rep. of). LEARN!
LMAO! Do you know something kid? With an attitude like that you're going nowhere in life - fast. When you're a bit older and have learnt bit more, you'll cringe at the things you've said in/about this video.
you literally have no clue what you are talking about. it is in no way adequate (im not your friend anyway) so please stop polluting the web with what is basically shit. and take that ridiculous hat off, you look like a twat
I'm Scottish, however, also British. Since i live in one of the countries making up Great Britain!!! Not nuclear physics, although some people seem to find it difficult. These are most likely the sort who resent being called European, even if they are obviously EURO..FKN..PEAN. What next, i'm not Scottish, i'm Glaswegian, i'm not English, i'm Bristol..onian???? Sorry Bristol, not sure? Must people always make drama out of nothing?
Here's an idea - how about you actually do a bit of research before you make a video? Rather than spout off utter tripe about a subject you clearly do not understand in the slightest.
Technically, Ireland is part of the British ISLES not isle. Its just controversial after the whole split thing. So, yes northern Irish people are British. Generalizing slightly on this, lots of Scottish people like to be known as British people, it just sometimes seems that way to outsiders. At least that's how i see it as a Brit and an English person.
if your talikg nationality its english or scottish or whatever but if not it is just british as in saying where you come from ie. briton, so there for i am british
I am British! I come from the South West of England, a place called Cornwall (a place often craving it's own independence as it's half segregated by a river!) But as you USA folks have States, we have England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland. British is not perceived as distasteful in my area of the country, although there are some very patriotic Irish & Scottish peeps who would very likely be against joining in the whole 'we have a country together' thing, but then you get that everywhere don't you:)
Believe it or not, I have been having quite a few conversations about "states" lately. My friend Matt told me that they don't have states in the UK, they have counties. I was like, We have counties here...in our states!!
I figured it out. A state is another way of saying country. Our United States of America means that we are about 50 tiny little countries united together into one. Thus, England is also a State, Scotland is a State, Wales and N. Ireland are too
Thank you, having lived here for 24 yrs I'm aware that Ireland is a different landmass than Scotland, Wales and England. However N. Irish people may choose whether to be classed as "Irish" or "British."
It is NOT a different place altogether, and there is no such thing as "British Isle"! It is "The British Isles". And please, don't listen to your friend Paul, it sounds like he knows even less than you.
I think there is occasional resentment towards the English from the Scots, Welsh and the N.Irelanders because it is London, England where Laws are made that govern British lives. Yes there is a Scottish Parliment, but ultimately London has the power. That being said, the PM's a Scot.I reckon the English get the most flak because they're the larger dominant country in our group of lovely little islands.I'm English but being called British is fine by me.But I would say that though wouldn't I..
But honestly No one outside of Europe Considers Scotland part of England even if it Technically is. And I never really thought of it but most people seem like they say English rather than British nowadays. I think it is a generational thing Most baby boomer and old persons probably would have that habit.
Do you know what it is, its because us British people HATE EVERYONE the English hate the Scottish, the Scottish hate the English, the English hate welsh, welsh hate Scottish and so on . North England hates south england and vice verser . North London hate south south hate west west hates north most parts of city hate north south east or west and postcodes(Zip codes) hate each other schools hate other schools. This is why British people hate americans, most also hate rest of europe and germany
the term British is not offensive in my eyes but thats because i'm from England
but i personally say English because it defines what part of the UK i'm from.. thats all
The Scots and Welsh people are under the UK so can be called British but could be Offensive to them as it could take away their identity of who they are and where they are from.
I am Welsh and refused to be called british because i see british as an overdominence of Englishness enforced on others, What strikes me you say we wlesh don't complain much? How do you think this story came to the spot lite? Because of a Welsh concil discouraging the term British and prefered Welsh, Caerffili Concil,. I find it rather amusing that you make a video about this and then say we don't complain much and we are the reason of your video haha.
What I specifically meant was that none of my Welsh friends complain. They are all really cool people and I've never once heard a one of them complain about being called British. I don't personally know if the majority complain or not. I can only speak from my personal experience.
Thanks so much for watching my video and commenting. Cheers!!
I think Scots and the Welsh get offended because when the world looks at Britain, the first thought is English. Us Englishmen don't have the best reputation in the world, i don't blame the Welsh and the Scottish hating the word 'British'
England is pretty much a shit hole, Scotland isn't the best but it's better than down here. Wales is a nice country, but England on the other hand isn't. Maybe the Scots and the Welsh don't want to be stereotyped like how us Englishmen are?
If it didn't make sense, i apologize, i didn't know how to word it.
Yes, England is a shit hole. I can say this because i've been a citizen for 12 years now after moving from Canada. Gang crime is so bad, it's not such much gun fights and stuff. Too many people are getting stabbed. This year alone, more people in London have been killed due to knife crime, than British Soldiers out in both theatres of war.
Holy Crap!! That does sound bad. Why is Knife Crime so bad? That is terrible. Really, really awful. How do you think it can be fixed?
And it did make sense. I'm sorry for my own wording. I said 'may' because your answer was highly opinionated. Not everyone may agree with you, and for those who don't it wouldn't make much sense at all. Cheers!!
Oh yeah, everyone is entitled to their opinion. And yes it is terrible. And the problem is gangs, kids are too afraid to walk out their doors without protection because it's just not safe anymore. I can't say anything about Wales or Scotland since i watch BBC South for my news updates.
How can i be solved? I don't know. Tougher laws, we need to be more like the American policing style, harder sentencing and such. You can get away with a slap on the wrist for carrying a 12inch knife!
My friend Paul said it's a lot worse in Southern England he said if I were there I wouldn't recognize the rest of the island as being the same country because people act so different.
He even said that most people in South England aren't even English, but immigrants from other countries. Sounds crowded to me.
Your friend Paul is incorrect, Southern England is relatively safe. I live in Brighton, south coast. Here knife crime is below 0.5%. Gun Crime in Sussex is almost nothing. The worst place in the UK is up north. Research these following these areas then compare them to the southern counties.
Merseyside - Manchester - Yorkshire.
The crime rate are so high there, down south it's very low.
Paul lives in New Castle. He travels all over the UK for his job. He was telling me all about how Scotland is different from England, and how the further south you go, the less likely that they would take Scottish Pounds at the shops.
That sounds like a biased opinion. I've lived in Northamptonshire, Kettering. Comparing that to down here, it was awful. And the reason we don't take Scottish pounds is because they're not English Sterling, if he was buy a packet of biscuits, and gave the man a Scottish pound, a southern would get the Scottish pound and use that in the south... it defeats the reason it's Scottish...
I'm welsh... i don't mind being called British... just don't mix me up with an English person... coz their ass hats! I like Scots and the Irish tho. :D
also dude northern Ireland is usually referred to as a part Ireland although it's currently still under english rule.
but unfortunately if the north or Scotland or wales are given their independents there would be uproar with with the others wanting independence aswell.
I'm English but if called British I dont really care cos I idenify myself as British during the Olympics and would support a Scottish or welsh team if they were in a major event which England weren't in
I'm British- and I don't mind the word ether! Infact, it should stay as british. Although I do know some people over where I live "London, England" like my own dad, does find it offensive. To me though, we live in Britain, like you said! So yeah- we should be called British. The word english to me, stands for a language!
It's Bri-T-ish by the way as in wa-T-er there is no "D"!
And in reply to your very blunt inadequate observations; there is no Isle of Britain!!! Dozy Pratt!
There is the British Isles - which comprises of Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Mainland U.K(E W S) and Northern Ireland all ultimately governed from Westminster.
Lose the hat
It's like saying Hawaii isn't part of the U.S because it isn't attached!
Now to the crux...I'm English first and British second!
The term British Isles is controversial in relation to Ireland,[4] where many people [5] find the term objectionable; the Irish government also discourages its usage.[6] There is evidence that as a result of these problems, "Britain and Ireland" is becoming a preferred description.
I couldnt care if people called me british and im english and its not the isle of britain its the british ISLES as there are more than one! oh and "snore"
Northern Ireland is part of the UK too! It's not on the island of Great Britain, but is still part of the British Isles, which includes the Republic of Ireland, although it's a separate country aren't they still British geographically? And the people who disapprove of the term 'British' are anti unionists, which is kind of odd in the era of post-imperial allegiances with the UN, EU, NATO etc. So yeah, any thoughts from an Irish person, Northern or Republican (Are they the correct terms?)
Geographically Irish are NOT British because Britain is a separate island. Ireland is its own Island, Britain is its own island.
They are called the British Isles because Britain was the dominant Island. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but it is not part of Britain. The two are different.
Hi from Wales, England have always been dominant and everyone else in the uk hates them. I don't mind being called british, however when people outside of the uk think Britain they think England, which is annoying as hell.
I'm proud to be British Its normally racist people that say words are racist a true non-racist person would look at the word with no hate or prejudice what so ever
so you admit your country is a leech? good we're getting somewhere. Please just hurry with independence already so we don't have to put up with your self pity, its getting really fucking old.
If you dont care jojobhofcfc why the hell are you posting then moron and when you said up our english arses you do know that factually scotland is one of the fattest countries just under America
I live in Wales and both my parents are English. I know Welsh people who would be really angry if someone called them English or Scottish but if they are called British they wouldn't care it's what is on our passports.
dude you have it wrong...us scottish dont want to be called British because when people think of that they think ENGLAND!! It sucks. Yes we love on the island of great britain, but on that island their are FOUR different Countries. So its not racist as such is jst annoying beacuse 99% of the time people dont disinguish the fact that their are different countries on that Island and they bundle us all in as England which is WORONG lol
my Scottish side of the family would get into fights constantly because they were called English, but they didn't care if they were called British, because in their eyes British was a loose term for anyone from a country affiliated with the United Kingdom, but that was just my family.
You pretty much got it on the nail...When we are in the UK we would distinguish between them...but when we are abroad we are called British which i would say is the general term...a bit like if you are american and in the US you would say what state you are from, but abroad you would call yourself American.
I dont really care to be honest..i'm proud to be called british...whoever first complained at being called british obviously wasn't proud to be who they were...
All of Ireland is part of the British Isles (I think).
I'm Welsh and try to avoid being called English, because a lot of Americans consider Wales to be in England I sometimes say British (even though they think it's the same thing).
I think the person who said Negro was as offensive as British was right, it's not offensive at all. Maybe we are far too touchy and it's our fault that we took it the wrong way.
northern island, isn't physically part of the same landmass of great britian, but it is part of great Britain, despite a number of people both there and in the south of Ireland not liking that.
St patricks cross is also included in the British flag, it's the red diagonal part.
for the record as well, i don't mind the term brittish
i can't see how being called british is offensive, im english and well british is the same thing really, just because we're associated wih the other three coutries, i am proud of being british, its british we are combined, anyone who is bothered about it needs to think twice about how sad it is to complain !
Ireland is a different landmass from Britain. They aren't British because they aren't from Britain. It's a different place altogether despite being part of the United Kingdom.
UNLESS you count Ireland as a British Isle. But it's still not the same landmass.
As an English person, I really don't think anything of being called British. I didn't even know that some people mind being called British. If anyone asks me where i'm from, i usually just say Britian
I seriously don't get the misunderstanding... The 6 counties that make up NI are still under British rule.

RodasBee 2 years ago
Incidentally - 'British' tends to be used amongst the ethnic minority groups to describe themselves, as they associate English/Scots/Welsh with the native peoples.
white43 2 years ago

I guess maybe one of the reasons why i wouldnt be offended is because i dont feel that i've been oppressed by the UK.
rudeydudey05 2 years ago
Thank you very much for your answer. It was very informative and not the least bit offensive in my own humble opinion. You seem to have a very good grasp on the situation and I have total respect for your answer and viewpoint. Thank you.
killerb144 2 years ago
I am English.
I can see why people may get offended in Britain, it is a complex situation, it basically boils down to Identity.
The way i see it:
British can stir up ideas of British Empire, which alot of Scots and Welsh do not want to be apart of, some do but most dont. On the same note, alot of the English dont mind being British first and English second, spose the English being the larger in population can forget that they are apart of a bigger union. no offence if i got that wrong.
rudeydudey05 2 years ago
The Isles you refer to are geographically termed 'the British Isles' and this, whether the Irish like it or not, is a physical and geographical fact.
In my experience, most Scots prefer to be referred to as 'Scots', the people from Wales 'Welsh' and the English will generally refer to themselves as British (though now the English are become increasingly nationalistic because of perceived political injustices they feel undermines their identity.
joolsmcsweeney 2 years ago

Look up Ulstermen.
e3hammer 2 years ago
Irish is Irish, English is English, Scottish is Scottish, Welsh is Welsh. x
killerb144 2 years ago
The islands of both Great Britain are in the British Isles. It doesn't mean they're British, it's just in an area known as the British Isles.
The Irish is Irish, English is English isn't that simple. A) Because we're all British whether we like it or not (except for those in the Republic of Ireland. B) It's down to how the individual views themself. As I commented previously, I am very proud to be British and that's a personal thing.
e3hammer 2 years ago
Aye, and I appreciate that. But to my understanding being British is not a political affiliation, it is a geographic designation. You aren't British because you are a member of one country or another, you are British because you were born within Britain. Anyone born ON the island of Great Britain is British whether they like it or not. Anyone born on the British Isles is British whether they like it or not. Whether Irish or British depends on whether or not Ireland is a British Isle. I think.
killerb144 2 years ago
Anyone born in Great Britain or Northern Ireland is British like it or not and that lunclues that nationalist Irish wishing to united the Republic of Ireland with Ulster (Northern Ireland). The British isles thing is just a geographic region which has no baring on a persons nationality. Hope that helps mate.

@e3hammer the northern ireland which technically includes county donegal, cavan and monaghan would have a majority of irish citizens.. a few deluded irishmen here & there that think they are british means nothing.

I would class myself as Scottish NOT British.

Technically, Ireland is part of the British ISLES not isle. Its just controversial after the whole split thing. So, yes northern Irish people are British. Generalizing slightly on this, lots of Scottish people like to be known as British people, it just sometimes seems that way to outsiders. At least that's how i see it as a Brit and an English person.

igncom1 3 years ago
I am British! I come from the South West of England, a place called Cornwall (a place often craving it's own independence as it's half segregated by a river!) But as you USA folks have States, we have England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland. British is not perceived as distasteful in my area of the country, although there are some very patriotic Irish & Scottish peeps who would very likely be against joining in the whole 'we have a country together' thing, but then you get that everywhere don't you:)
Xeno298 3 years ago
Believe it or not, I have been having quite a few conversations about "states" lately. My friend Matt told me that they don't have states in the UK, they have counties. I was like, We have counties here...in our states!!
I figured it out. A state is another way of saying country. Our United States of America means that we are about 50 tiny little countries united together into one. Thus, England is also a State, Scotland is a State, Wales and N. Ireland are too
Pretty awesome stuff, that!!
killerb144 3 years ago

Why "British" could be interpreted as offensive:
-When it is presumed that British and English are the SAME thing.
E.g. - "I love Hugh Grant's British accent."
This pisses people off because it presumes all Britons are English - who aren't particularly popular.

BMXUK123 3 years ago
Thank you. I suppose that can make sense. I'm sorry you don't like your country though. Is it really that bad?
killerb144 3 years ago
If it didn't make sense, i apologize, i didn't know how to word it.
Yes, England is a shit hole. I can say this because i've been a citizen for 12 years now after moving from Canada. Gang crime is so bad, it's not such much gun fights and stuff. Too many people are getting stabbed. This year alone, more people in London have been killed due to knife crime, than British Soldiers out in both theatres of war.
BMXUK123 3 years ago
Cheers!!
killerb144 3 years ago
Oh yeah, everyone is entitled to their opinion. And yes it is terrible. And the problem is gangs, kids are too afraid to walk out their doors without protection because it's just not safe anymore. I can't say anything about Wales or Scotland since i watch BBC South for my news updates.
How can i be solved? I don't know. Tougher laws, we need to be more like the American policing style, harder sentencing and such. You can get away with a slap on the wrist for carrying a 12inch knife!
BMXUK123 3 years ago
My friend Paul said it's a lot worse in Southern England he said if I were there I wouldn't recognize the rest of the island as being the same country because people act so different.
He even said that most people in South England aren't even English, but immigrants from other countries. Sounds crowded to me.
killerb144 3 years ago
Your friend Paul is incorrect, Southern England is relatively safe. I live in Brighton, south coast. Here knife crime is below 0.5%. Gun Crime in Sussex is almost nothing. The worst place in the UK is up north. Research these following these areas then compare them to the southern counties.
Merseyside - Manchester - Yorkshire.
The crime rate are so high there, down south it's very low.
Can i ask, where did he get this information?
BMXUK123 3 years ago
Paul lives in New Castle. He travels all over the UK for his job. He was telling me all about how Scotland is different from England, and how the further south you go, the less likely that they would take Scottish Pounds at the shops.
killerb144 3 years ago
That sounds like a biased opinion. I've lived in Northamptonshire, Kettering. Comparing that to down here, it was awful. And the reason we don't take Scottish pounds is because they're not English Sterling, if he was buy a packet of biscuits, and gave the man a Scottish pound, a southern would get the Scottish pound and use that in the south... it defeats the reason it's Scottish...
BMXUK123 3 years ago
I didn't quite get that. English Sterling?

The term British Isles is controversial in relation to Ireland,[4] where many people [5] find the term objectionable; the Irish government also discourages its usage.[6] There is evidence that as a result of these problems, "Britain and Ireland" is becoming a preferred description.

It's either the United Kingdom or Great Britain, one of them includes North Ireland and one doesn't.
However I think British Isles includes England, Wales, Scotland and all of Ireland.

i can't see how being called british is offensive, im english and well british is the same thing really, just because we're associated wih the other three coutries, i am proud of being british, its british we are combined, anyone who is bothered about it needs to think twice about how sad it is to complain !

People from Northern Ireland ARE British.
Weirdly, I rarely/never say I'm British, I think of it as a very American thing to say. I'd either say I was English, or from the UK.

Ireland is a different landmass from Britain. They aren't British because they aren't from Britain. It's a different place altogether despite being part of the United Kingdom.
UNLESS you count Ireland as a British Isle. But it's still not the same landmass.

ireland isn't in the UK aswell just the 6 counties in the north

Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Just as you said.

As an English person, I really don't think anything of being called British. I didn't even know that some people mind being called British. If anyone asks me where i'm from, i usually just say Britian
