They both sound good in there own way, neither is bettet than the other, you learn to appreciate for what the systems were and what memories you have of them, to me both systems tg, genesis and snes were all greatesy of the great systems, where nowadays ps3, nore xbox will ever come close to the fond memories these 16bit systems instilled in us, I cant pick a winner, greatesy of the great
@RayofJustice No kidding, dude! I love that company and I wish Tecno Soft was still in business. In fact, I have always wondered what it would be like if Tecno Soft made licensed games. I bet that they would've made them awesome.
the tg16 one is greatly done really 2 thumbs up but is there anyone that can surpass technosoft? sega 10 channel synth versus a rawwer tg 16 version.both very nice but genesis just ads that new dimension to it,like devilish the choir kinda sounds etc.
I prefere the megadrive music as Technosoft have crafted there own raw and gritty edge,Either way you cant go wrong with Devil crush,an incredible game with a truely amazing soundtrac :).
The 3 that disliked this video wanted the games "Devil's Crush" & "Dragon's Fury" for Christmas, but instead, got bags of marbles and red devil capes.
@Soukyugurentai Musical composition and sound quality are two very different things. The SOUND was terrible in that game (T.F.IV), BUT, it had GREAT Musical compositions. Complex, powerful, adrenaline-pumping melodies and beats are what made that game's music so awesome, not its SOUND QUALITY. Take the games, "Devil's Crush" & "Devil Crash", for example. They both have the same music compositions, but do they have the same sound quality? No way! The PC-Engine's version has much better quality!
@ShadowWolfIsBack There are plenty of Genesis games that sound great and have great compositions. For example Streets of Rage 1 and 2. All the Sonic games, Thunder Force 3, Earthworm Jim, and many others.
@SegaFanatic5188 I TOTALLY agree with that. Streets of Rage 1 & 2 had AWESOME sound and compositions. Sonic The Hedgehog also had stunning music and sound quality, it almost sounded like Bobby Brown style music, didn't it? However, I was only discussing the usual sound quality of the Mega Drive/Genesis, not the musical compositions of its games, which is a completely other thing.
@ShadowWolfIsBack For the most part the bad quality sound is mostly in US developed games and bad third party ports from the SNES. Genesis sound quality depends mostly on the quality of code running the sound engine, which for some reason lots of US developers used very bad sound engines for their Genesis games.
I do appreciate how Technosoft put their own spin on the Devil's Crush song. It's definitely very different, perhaps more laid back, and even a bit more DEVO-ish to my ears, but there's also more texture and more kinds of sounds in the MD mix.
I really like the PCE soundchip. is like a NES but with more instruments. In Air Buster the music is better than the MD version. But in Devil's Crash the music was re-made by Tecnosoft, the kings of MD music. And i prefer the MD music.
The PC/TG version just has more character than the Genesis/MD, despite the latter having a cleaner sound. It's far from sounding real, but the TG16 music actually sounds like it's being played, while the Genesis just systematically plays each note with little personality. It does have some nice little accents that the TG16 lacks, but what really turns me off is the lack of sheer intensity in the climax. Poor use of layering, and the weak synth just doesn't drive the song home at all.
tg16 version has more yngwie malmsteen to it right?.it sound faster due to the primitive instrument useage.you can't go wrong with both versions but because the genesis it's it divided by multiple sound makes it sound a bit non liniar and the tg 16 stays in one tone but i don't own a tg 16,i'm glad it's on wii so we still can enjoy it.but i'd go for the genesis one because the game has allot more replay value then the tg16/pc engine cd why? tg/cd has it's moments but not more the sega had.
MegaDrive version hands down, PC version sounds muffled and not a well thought out piece (Ala sounds rushed) plus is dull - MD version had everything - depth, commitment, fresh clean and listenable.
The Genesis version sounds very clean compared to the TG-16 version (which almost sounds like a 20-year-old cassette tape).
That said, I still prefer the TG-16 version, simply because it's arranged so much better than the Genesis version. It's much more powerful and aggressive IMO.
theres a point how primitive the tg version may sound it's like the same reason that i love nes music so much well composed with lesser effects.come the genesis is like lightyears ahead of the tg 16 in music and that due the help of powerfull composers like yuzo koshiro, nothing on tg16 pc engine can touch streets of rage 2 music wise dunno how yuzo did but that game a history.
what me and my brother remembe, back in the day that the pc engine had games that look like crappy 8 bit even some later titles and some games looked like neo geo but for the those you pay pretty much, sapphire soldier blade the really expensive games looked really good.those snk games also looked great but where so mediocore.
All PCE games were in the same range in price BITD. Collector's prices have more to do with supply & demand.
Even games with less stunning graphics made up for it in quantity, CD music, voice, cinemas, etc... But there were so many PCE games released, that there are lots of technically impressive games for every simpler one.
yeah only yet to see other games then lords or thunder and sapphire look good, and i never seen anything on pc engine looking better then snes so the 488 colours are just theorie that's not used.same as they've said eternal champions on sega cd used 250 colours offcourse it looked good but there wheren't 200+ colours in that game maybe throught rgb.tg16 had some nice/better looking games but sega and snes had more.
i think the genesis wins in general but i have to hand this one to pcengine its way more on drugs, but that about the colours is so old, pcengine claims that it can display over 500 colours in screen but i played some games on it that had a strange 8 bit look, overall graphically the genesis is superior cause it moves everything to make it look like 16 bit and genesis games are coloured in pretty rich, maui mallard is impossible on tg16.
There are many 8-bit looking Genesis/Mega Drive games as well.
But just because you aren't familiar with TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine games, it doesn't mean that they're all limited by your limited experience with them.
i had that system for 3 years, its just limited compared to the genesis, play splatter house and then play splatter house 2 and 3,play sapphire(beutiful game) and then play batman and robin, its not about the colours its about the total picture, any dumb ass could tell streets of rage 2 looks way better then final fight 2 in its overal presentation, and theres not one beat em up on pc egnine that can match sor 2 in terms of quality nor thunder force series.pc engine is fun but no garphics monster.
Comparing different or shared games to compare hardware doesn't prove anything. The reults are due to the developer, not the hardware. Bad ports are bad ports.
Play SMB1 then play SMB2 or 3 on the same console. Splatterhouse was an early modest port of an arcade and is nothing special by PCE standards..
Beat 'em Ups aren't a system defining genre for most people, but there are still some good ones for PCE.
Most people think that Gate of Thunder at least matches the 16-bit Thunder Force games.
as for beat em ups riot zone looks fugly and is a total ripp off of streets of rage a fatal fury it looks really worse.pc engine can have good game but have you seen a rpg on it that looks better overal then ps4??? or shooter like tf4 or the paralax 3d stuff like in batman and robin, and picking the sega cd batman returns is impossible on tgcd.the obnly front sega genesis failed a bit on is arcade titles.
Riot Zone began as a 1991 Sega arcade game which isn't a rip off SoR, if anything SoR is the evolution of it... but they're still both rip offs of Final Fight.
There are many PCE shooters that look and/or play nicer than TFIV. If you truly mean better "overall" and not just "the part(s) PSIV excells at", then yes, many PCE RPGs look better. How many Batman & Robin-style parallax 3D games are there for Genesis?
how many titles same as this are on pc engine and what are those games, sapphire, that game totally unimpressed me.for an 8 bit core system its good but really it lacks comercial goodness like earthworm jim and it lack games like gunstar or others.anyone ever seen rocket knight adventure in action on pc,i didnt and rip or no rip riot zone plain sucks anyone with eyes can see that it looks like crap, and sor just isn't crap but straight forward candy.
Try looking at Earthworm Jim with a better connection than composite.
Konami made Dracula X, Snatcher, Gradius 1 & 2, Salamander and Parodius among others instead of Rocket Knight Adv. If the SNES can do a RKA game, do you really think that the PCE can't?
Many PCE shooters do as much as Gunstar Heroes.
Why do you keep mentioning Riot Zone? Nobody thinks its great. Its like trying to convince people that Sword of Sodan isn't teh best Genesis game.
yeah snes had transparencies.and snes had more then 1000 colors in screen while nec has 512 as a pallet equal to the genesisi, stil i don't know why it is so rare for a genesis to put more then 64 colours in screen and a technically simpeler system like the tg16 said to put al 512 in screen.,while i never seen that in game.but colours in screen depends on how it's beem show on screen like the md1 can blend colours into transparencies.snes is superior to pce.
The Genesis can't get close to 64 colors on screen without shadow/highlight transparencies or glitch-like tricks that only work for stills. Super high color Genesis game color counts are in the 40's.
The master palette numbers are only the available colors to choose from. Each system uses 16 color palettes and has the same number of unique sets they can use for sprites and for bgs.
no over 50 alien soldier gunstar, serious and with shadow highlight over 100,toy story the pictures in between are good examples, vectorman with shadow highlight, there are smart developers out there that get many things done even 64 colours simultaineously in screen also have you ever seen red zone on a non 3d system,by trickery many things are possible.i liked the genesis more the snes and pce,1st it had the more comercial games who doesnt want to play road rash etc and it had explosive animation
Some do slip into the 50's, but that's still really pushing it. Shadow/highlight can produce a an ingame screenshot that technically has 100+ colors, but it still looks like a 50 color image with a shadow over it. Same with SNES transparencies, which don't look as nice as a real 1000 color game.
Separate from whatever things might need to be done differently when porting from MD to SNES or PCE, the actual graphics themselves can remove compromises made for the MD as well as add extra shading.
The "blending" is just dithering, which SNES, PCE and arcades also use in small doses, but it works better blending a high number of colors than making up for a low number of colors.
It also relied on the Genesis' awful RF & composite quality to blur everything together since the U.S. was the biggest market. Europe and Japan got to see all the grainy pixels in RGB & S-Video.
If you compare the shared games between SNES & PCE, you'll find as with Genesis games, that most look better on PCE.
Since you like using similar or shared titles as examples, why not compare the MD and PCE versions of Darius 2, Lords of Thunder, Langrisser, Castlevania, Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury 2/Special, Forgotten Worlds, Tatsujin, Gain Ground, Monster Lair, Double Dragon II, Afterburner II, World Heroes, or Bomberman '94,?
I'm not saying that the PCE pwns the Genesis, but one doesn't make the other look 8-bit and anything a port from one to the other might lose could be replaced by a unique improvement.
all aracde game in my opinion sega its weakest ports to home.okay sice we talk arcade outrun? strider?,sega just failed me a bit on arcade games pushing sega its limits, but when i call gunstar and alien soldier the tgcd gest a heartattack, ristar aggain batman and robin tf4 musha streets of rage series, and mostly the genesis has its advantage of way more channels the tg16.if you think pc engine is that powerfull try gunstar with al its animation a tg16 with or without arcade card it won't run.
Sega arcade ports are fine, it's just the colorful/detailed stuff like CPS-1 games that play to the Genesis' biggest weakness(es).
Gunstar Heroes has repetitive graphics to save on space and onscreen color and relies on special effects to avoid real animation. It's still a cool looking game, but it's built around the Genesis' strengths/weaknesses. Many PCE games also toss around lots of stuff and do it with more color/shading than the Genesis can do.
offcourse like all say and vectormnan plain sucks to,are you going to threw bonks at me,name some good examples im intrested.i would love to see earth worm jim 2 on pc engine exact same quality as the genesis, even nec said the system was made simple but at it's time it was revolutionary.what sega did in the arcades in that time was insane in 1986 3d and in 1990 a 32bit monster they where ridiculeous ahead of theyre time.
EWJ could have the graphics dramatically improved, even if the bg layering wasn't done the same way. Replicating a game EXACTLY means limiting it to the original flaws as well and ignoring what a different console could improve.
NEC didn't design the PCE, they only manufactured it. The PCE was released in 1987 yet it continued to have some of the most impressive 16-bit games all the way into 1996.
okay my turbo duo said nec pc engine,it has so many names that i forgot the clue,i mean there are many of those systems,i would like if name some of those really good looking games im not that familair with it but i sold the system with the same main reason as i sold my neo geo aes,to damn expensive and typical games,at least neo geo had very standart but awesome looking games.
There are several free emulators as well as the user friendly Magic Engine which you can play for free forever using save states. You can download free isos to try games out too.
where can you download isos??.and you'lle porbably need alcohol120 or deamon for it,deamon is cool as long as you don't instal the help bar that thing can mess up you're pc really bad.
Ai Cho Aniki, Cho Aniki, World Heroes 2, Fatal Fury Special, Art of Fighting, Magical Chase, Macross 2036, Macross ELS, Dragon Knight & Graffiti & II & III, Lords of Thunder, Seiya Monogatari, Cosmic Fantasy 4 Chp 1 & 2, Parodius, Godzilla, Gate of Thunder, Dracula X, Super Darius 2, Legend of Xanadu I (more so boss sections) & II, Spriggan, Star Parodia...
not to bash the system i try to like them all,but you knwo genneis is just hook and play i remember pc engine having card etc to make several games work like sapphire still not that big of a problem back in the day, retro was good and i like that we can emulate it on the wii,i gues since pc engine never saw that much comercial titles that where on genesis like rocket knight,(wich is 10000x better the the snes on in graphics) and the EWJ series and many others its hard to compare.
The pre-Sega-CD PCE CD systems may have needed to use a system card, but by the time the Sega-CD came out the Duo systems had Super CD capability built-in and even if ACD games later required the Arcade Card, There's still more hooking up to do with a Sega-CD combo, including two ac adaptors.
untrue sega cdx with cdx pro or megacart,or modification cut's it.one adaptor one console.but props to the pc engine, but it was damn rare and for me not as intresting as those 2 others who where really heading with games like streets of rage and sonictg16/pc engine has some nice games but save a few pennyes for the system,i had a turbo duo with the ugliest looking games.
The CDX came later, but the point is that it's no big deal sticking in a card/cart, just as you mentioned doing with a CDX.
There are so few Arcade Card and U.S. exclusive HuCard games that an unmodded PCE Duo system can play over 700 of the 700 and some odd games available without using a system card.
i know i could play almost any game on a unmodded turbo duo.i,m missing the system like i miss my neo geo,it's all good except for my wallet.i can buy 10 great genesis games for the price of sapphire, offcourse i can get those cheaper games like street fighter etc on pc engine for barely nothing.i think genesis was my easiest way out and childhood.when i''m searfching for a disney game or a earthworm jim alike or final fight alike game on pc enigne i can search but barely find.
It's true that the strengths that commercial Genesis and SNES games stressed weren't priorities in most PCE games, but there are still plenty that do, along with all the other pros that PCE CD is known for.
That and the less popular outside-of-Japan genres like RPG, Sims, Digital Comic, Mahjong, Board Game and really, even shooters.
The Genesis is actually worse at handling interactive/real action (objects with collision), which is why games like TFIV suffer from slowdown. The PCE has twice the MIPS. However, due to poor design at times, more PCE games have spots of flicker/breakup since it uses sprites for more stuff (like making layered bgs).
so actually tf4 plain out sucks and looks sucky and has no feel to it what so ever,i think it looked beyond gates of thunder and set better music with a card then gates of thunder did on cd medium, but thats just taste.
The Genesis has the same number of FM channels as the PCE has for whatever it wants. The rest is SMS sound and a single channel for samples that the entire game's sound often has to freeze for just to play a single effect.
The PCE can do any number of high quality simultaneous sampled sounds. See my last video for an example of a super high quality single channel PCE sampled sound.
true but the pc engine had psg channels like a nes,i think pc engine has more similar music to nes then genesis, ever heard skitchin or tf4 or comix zone blasting out of a pc engine, while it's similair to nes it has it's advantages cause i liked the sound of many nes games better the snes or genesis, silver surfer for that point.
Do you know what the Arcade Card is? None of the PCE CD system cards or the CD-ROM upgrade the PCE hardware whatsoever (unlike the Sega-CD). Technically, they're more limited than a cart/card, because the games have to load segments at a time. All PCE CD games are pure PCE and could be put on to HuCards.
as i said on another vid, the tg16, or pce version, THE ORIGINAL is mush better in every way, say for the boss fight at the end of crash. all crush has is a stupid 30 second cutscene of the lizard queen blowing up, and the witch falling into an eternal sleep
I have never heard a clear Genesis Sample, and my PC emulators actually enhance the sound (not to mention video with filters). All voices sound scratchy and are recorded at low sample rates. Listen to Sonic at the beginning when it says "SEGA!", or any game with voices. They all sound bad. Devil's Crash is an inferior port in every way, not to mention Devil's Crush plays full screen the full time, where as the score takes up part of the screen in Crash. Devil's Crush kills Crash, nuff said.
Developers didn't usually use high quality samples in 16-bit console games to save on space.
The Genesis has a single sound channel dedicated to samples that do them about as good as the PCE or SNES can.
But it can only run 1 at a time at full quality. Multiple samples reduce the quality capability, I'm guessing proprtionate to the number of samples running at once.
I know how Genesis works, it cannot do samples at a high enough rate. It has inferior voice abilities compared to SNES especially, and TG-16. Genesis sounds very authentic to older arcade games because it uses very similar or the exact same FM Synthesizer that were used. But even with one digital sample, none of them are clear compared to Turbo and SNES. If it could do one voice clear, the "Sega!" voice on Sonic would be clear, it crackles like all voices do.
Well, if the Genesis voice was done right, then it sounded fine, even better than SNES voices.
Genesis can do samples at sampling rates of up to 37 khz, though 12-16 khz was average. SNES does samples 32 khz, but they're often muffled out.
A handful of games, tho, didn't do them right, so they sound grainy.
Oh, and the Gameboy Advance uses 8-bit samples just as the Genesis does. However, GBA games have much more cartridge space, so they sound better. Like the Genesis, samples average 16 khz.
Most PC engine games used timer interupts for sampled sounds, with the smallest loop setting (1024 cpu cycles). This limited the sample rate to only 7 Khz, so in reality most Genesis games used higher quality samples. Badly coded sample routines made them sound scratchy though.
BTW, my new PC engine emulator currently has some problem with samples (next thing to improve)
The Genesis/MD version runs at a higher resolution than the PCE/TG version thus the " full screen the full time" comment isn't accurate--they both have the same amount of playfield on-screen, but the MD/Gen rev squeezes more onto the screen at once.
The MD/Gen rev also has more actual boards to play on than the PCE which, I'd think, would count for something, right? And the graphics have been touched up which, at least to me, makes them look much more impressive than on PCE.
And when I say extra "boards" I should have clarified that I meant sub-boards not an additional table, just so nobody sees this in a month and comes out screaming that I'm some Genesis zealot that doesn't respect the PC Engine...(I also prefer the Genesis tunes--it's freaking Tecnosoft!--to the PCE, so you can chew on me for that if you like)
The Genesis version uses a higher resolution and both use the same amount of pixel space for the actual playfield... but the Genesis playfield really does take up less of the actual screen (without adding detail to the actual playfield) since a TV screen has a set size.
All of the graphics were redrawn. I think that the main playfield graphics/art are nicer on the PCE, but the Genesis version really improved the bonus stages (even though I don't like some of the art).
Youtube compression kills the quality from both, but hurts the PC Engine version more. Anyway, I have both Devil's Crush, and Devil's Crash. Devil's Crush (PC Engine)is superior in every way....it's got more colors, better music, better sound effects, more detail, and actually plays much faster. The music on the MD version sounds good..until you play the PC Engine version. Genesis/MD had decent music ability, but as far as sound samples it was pretty horrible. All voices sound scratchy.
-The Genesis had 6 FM audio channels + 4 PSG channels (got no info about sampling channels though they probably there is some capacity since many games used it), whereas the PC Engine had 6 PSG audio channels, with the capacity of turning any of them into a sampling channel.
Snes game later and kicked the ass of both systems, even tough the PC Engine palette remained superior.
Thanks for the input. PCE games always looked more colorful than Genesis ones. About the sampling capabilities, I think Genesis is the worst, everything sounds grainy, but its FM+PSG chips does a good job and overall speaking about the audio I stick with the Genesis against a PCE comparisson.
Aboute the SNES sampling I never but much attention. There are quite a few posts here at youtube with such comparissons, I will give a try. There is a very interesting comparisson using Street FighterII
If the voice was done right on the Genesis, it actually sounded better than SNES voices.
All digitized samples I've heard on the Genesis actually sound better than SNES ones in a way. As you mentioned, the SNES has some kind of filter that muffles the samples and makes them more 'quiet'.
The sample rates of digitized sounds on Genesis ranged from 10khz to as high as 37khz.
Sincerely I stick with the Genesis sound chip. But at the same time I stick with the PC Engine palette. This is pretty much a technical reason:
-The Genesis had a 64 on screen collor palette (there where some hacks to deal with this limit, but few games used it), whereas the PC Engine had a 256 collor palette for sprites + 256 for background.
Technosoft used a great sound driver in their Genesis games. They created their own custom one just as most developers did.
Their Thunder Force games sound amazing. Electric guitars sound more like real ones.
Genesis games that didn't sound great were generally ones that used the GEMS sound driver. Tommy Talarico, tho, made some good tunes w/ it (eg Global Global Gladiators). XMen 2 Clone wars uses it, and it sounds great. Guys from the freestyle band Information Society made the music.
Ive been reading allot recently on the pcengine and the history behind it. I am a big Sega fan but I find myself humbled by the pcengine and tg16 simply because hudson soft had the balls to take on Nintindo. The more games I download for this system off the wii, the more respect I have for it. It does have its advantages over the Genesis and SuperNintindo. I love the brightness and spirit of their games. The sound is pretty good probably equall to the supernintindo but not quit up to the sega.
I really do enjoy the turbografx and was impressed back in the day by its colors. I loved bonks adventure, kieth courage and the pinball games. However I also had a Genesis which I always felt took gaming to another level in terms of depth, graphics and sound.
Call it what you want but the "illusion" you refer to blows anything away that the turbo8 bit was capable of. I mean when Golden Axe came out it blew everything away and then came TG16s answer....legendry axe. I rest my case.
First, Legendary Axe rules, it's a great game, but, it's also a different type of game, then Golden Axe. Golden Axe is a brawler, like Streets of Rage, Legendary is a platforming hack n slash. Also, I will mention that there is a version of Golden Axe on the Turbo by Renovation, & it sucks. It's a terrible conversion, I ain't afraid to admit when something I believe sucks.
PLease!!! Sega had Sonic 3d, virtual racing and snes had many 3d type games starting with aspects of supermario world, ultraman f-zero just to name a few of there release titles. There were so many more for each platform that the turbo 16 could not even attempt.
Never saw any 3D type games for the turbo16. Oh I guess cause it was just a turbo8 bit system. The Sega sold well enough in japan to release sega CD and 32x. Is that cause it was a dud? What came out for turbo grafx after turbo cd???? Nothing it just died and went away. the games were all 2 dimensional hyped up 8bit games.
I always preferred the Megadrive version more..but they're both incredible..
And not to seem spammy but...anyone know where I can download any of these tracks? Galbadia Temple nor any of my favorite video game soundtrack sites seem to have any..
Between the two versions, I pretty much prefer the MD (Genesis) version due to its crystal-clear quality and epic atmosphere. The PC Engine version sounds as if it were ported from an NES game.
yea, there are people like you who go on about how PCE music likes more like NES music.
Well, its synthesis quality is higher than the NES'.
On PCE, you can turn any of the 6 PSG channels into a sample one. PCE samples sound way better than NES ones. You can play more samples simulatenously on PCE than you can on the Genesis.
In the PSG of the PCE, you're not limited to square & triangle waves as opposed to the NES' PSG.
On PCE, you create custom waveforms and use any one that you want.
The BGM is always important and if it can't suck you into the game and add mood then it doesn't matter how good it sounds. Both versions are awesome in their own way. The MD had some good use of the music chip, Thunder Force 4, SoR 2 & 3, Contra:Hard Corps, Phantasy Star IV, etc.
I personally like the Genesis better. What I can say for sure is that this song would sound awesome if it was played by a band. Put some real drums, keyboard and electric guitar let's say.
The main problem, is lazy programmers &/or musicians who make not only weak tunes in general, but only do maybe 3 or 4 instruments for a song, like a song on the NES. Also, another problem, for me, is when they don't bother to incorporate sampled drums, since, as I said, the Turbo is weak when it comes to bass, & nice sampled drums really give it some power in that respect.
To each his own though. Me personally, I've always hated the old whiny arcade sound that the Genesis has as well. It always got on my nerves. For instance, listen to..Contra on the NES, then listen to the arcade. To me, the arcade just sounds horrible, even when it does have more sound channels.
The SNES, of the 3 systems of that generation(Neo Geo was kind of in it's own arena) had the most potential, & can sound incredible, but, it seems like it's less chip music, more flat midi. I personally use midi, but, it blows away what the SNES can do, which is why I say flat. But, once again comes down to good programmers, & there are some absolutly fantastic soundtracks on the SNES thanks to some great coders.
The only advantage's of the Genesis sound, is the 10 channels vs. SNES's 8 & Turbo's 6(7 in cd games, because it adds an extra channel for adpcm), & the fact that, compared to the Turbo, the Genesis can put out some really good bass. The Turbo can't, it's really weak in that department.
Hmm, the Genesis version deffinitly sounds like crap compared to the Turbo Grafx version. Probably partly because the Genesis version was a port, done by Technosoft, rather then by Naxat Soft. And the new screens look terrible in motion, you can't even see the ball most of the time. Way to go Technosoft for ruining a great game!
And, it deffinitly sounds nothing like the NES, other then the fact that it sounds "warm" as most people put it, as opposed to the ridiculous sounding whiny, tinny sound of the Genesis. That's not to say there aren't games that took advantage of the Genesis chip, but, there's not many.

Personally i dont think the MD could have done any better. That definitely sounds like Technosoft and the music in their games are brilliant. Check out Thunderforce 4 and Elemental Master to see what i mean.
Having some experience with doing genny music, it's true that FM can sound flat and whiny in the higher octaves but it can easily be helped with psg and combining channels to do echo, you can also do distortion and vibrato effects. In this example the MD version lacks some of those fuzzy sounds but they were all possible, the instrumentation and mixing could be better in a couple of the songs. As for the PCE it sounds warmer but also kind of cheap, lacks bass and that ominous atmosphere that
A few more good to great sounding games: sword of Vermilion, Gleylancer, Light Crusader, Alien soldier, Hybrid Front, Midnight Resistance, socket, Battle Mania 2, Two Crude Dudes, Mega Turrican and Ristar. :)
sorry for spamming but what I also meant to say was that the genesis/mega drive seems unsuitable for orchestral or acoustic music, you can't achieve very good strings or acoustic guitar. I don't think a game like super castlevania IV would've ever sounded as good on the MD.
They both sound good in there own way, neither is bettet than the other, you learn to appreciate for what the systems were and what memories you have of them, to me both systems tg, genesis and snes were all greatesy of the great systems, where nowadays ps3, nore xbox will ever come close to the fond memories these 16bit systems instilled in us, I cant pick a winner, greatesy of the great

the tg16 one is greatly done really 2 thumbs up but is there anyone that can surpass technosoft? sega 10 channel synth versus a rawwer tg 16 version.both very nice but genesis just ads that new dimension to it,like devilish the choir kinda sounds etc.

@ShadowWolfIsBack
I disagree. You won't find a game that sounds like Thunder Force IV for PCE.
Soukyugurentai 1 year ago
@Soukyugurentai Musical composition and sound quality are two very different things. The SOUND was terrible in that game (T.F.IV), BUT, it had GREAT Musical compositions. Complex, powerful, adrenaline-pumping melodies and beats are what made that game's music so awesome, not its SOUND QUALITY. Take the games, "Devil's Crush" & "Devil Crash", for example. They both have the same music compositions, but do they have the same sound quality? No way! The PC-Engine's version has much better quality!
ShadowWolfIsBack 1 year ago
@ShadowWolfIsBack There are plenty of Genesis games that sound great and have great compositions. For example Streets of Rage 1 and 2. All the Sonic games, Thunder Force 3, Earthworm Jim, and many others.
SegaFanatic5188 1 year ago
@SegaFanatic5188 I TOTALLY agree with that. Streets of Rage 1 & 2 had AWESOME sound and compositions. Sonic The Hedgehog also had stunning music and sound quality, it almost sounded like Bobby Brown style music, didn't it? However, I was only discussing the usual sound quality of the Mega Drive/Genesis, not the musical compositions of its games, which is a completely other thing.
ShadowWolfIsBack 1 year ago
@ShadowWolfIsBack For the most part the bad quality sound is mostly in US developed games and bad third party ports from the SNES. Genesis sound quality depends mostly on the quality of code running the sound engine, which for some reason lots of US developers used very bad sound engines for their Genesis games.

I do appreciate how Technosoft put their own spin on the Devil's Crush song. It's definitely very different, perhaps more laid back, and even a bit more DEVO-ish to my ears, but there's also more texture and more kinds of sounds in the MD mix.

TraumaFox 2 years ago
tg16 version has more yngwie malmsteen to it right?.it sound faster due to the primitive instrument useage.you can't go wrong with both versions but because the genesis it's it divided by multiple sound makes it sound a bit non liniar and the tg 16 stays in one tone but i don't own a tg 16,i'm glad it's on wii so we still can enjoy it.but i'd go for the genesis one because the game has allot more replay value then the tg16/pc engine cd why? tg/cd has it's moments but not more the sega had.

My overall thoughts:
The Genesis version sounds very clean compared to the TG-16 version (which almost sounds like a 20-year-old cassette tape).
That said, I still prefer the TG-16 version, simply because it's arranged so much better than the Genesis version. It's much more powerful and aggressive IMO.
Teraforce88 2 years ago 3
theres a point how primitive the tg version may sound it's like the same reason that i love nes music so much well composed with lesser effects.come the genesis is like lightyears ahead of the tg 16 in music and that due the help of powerfull composers like yuzo koshiro, nothing on tg16 pc engine can touch streets of rage 2 music wise dunno how yuzo did but that game a history.

aryinc 2 years ago
All PCE games were in the same range in price BITD. Collector's prices have more to do with supply & demand.
Even games with less stunning graphics made up for it in quantity, CD music, voice, cinemas, etc... But there were so many PCE games released, that there are lots of technically impressive games for every simpler one.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
@aryinc: You are aware the PC Engine had a 16-bit dedicated graphics chip that displayed 480 colors at once? I guess not.
majesticlizard 3 months ago
@majesticlizard
yeah only yet to see other games then lords or thunder and sapphire look good, and i never seen anything on pc engine looking better then snes so the 488 colours are just theorie that's not used.same as they've said eternal champions on sega cd used 250 colours offcourse it looked good but there wheren't 200+ colours in that game maybe throught rgb.tg16 had some nice/better looking games but sega and snes had more.
aryinc 3 months ago
i think the genesis wins in general but i have to hand this one to pcengine its way more on drugs, but that about the colours is so old, pcengine claims that it can display over 500 colours in screen but i played some games on it that had a strange 8 bit look, overall graphically the genesis is superior cause it moves everything to make it look like 16 bit and genesis games are coloured in pretty rich, maui mallard is impossible on tg16.
aryinc 2 years ago
There are many 8-bit looking Genesis/Mega Drive games as well.
But just because you aren't familiar with TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine games, it doesn't mean that they're all limited by your limited experience with them.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
i had that system for 3 years, its just limited compared to the genesis, play splatter house and then play splatter house 2 and 3,play sapphire(beutiful game) and then play batman and robin, its not about the colours its about the total picture, any dumb ass could tell streets of rage 2 looks way better then final fight 2 in its overal presentation, and theres not one beat em up on pc egnine that can match sor 2 in terms of quality nor thunder force series.pc engine is fun but no garphics monster.
aryinc 2 years ago
Comparing different or shared games to compare hardware doesn't prove anything. The reults are due to the developer, not the hardware. Bad ports are bad ports.
Play SMB1 then play SMB2 or 3 on the same console. Splatterhouse was an early modest port of an arcade and is nothing special by PCE standards..
Beat 'em Ups aren't a system defining genre for most people, but there are still some good ones for PCE.
Most people think that Gate of Thunder at least matches the 16-bit Thunder Force games.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
as for beat em ups riot zone looks fugly and is a total ripp off of streets of rage a fatal fury it looks really worse.pc engine can have good game but have you seen a rpg on it that looks better overal then ps4??? or shooter like tf4 or the paralax 3d stuff like in batman and robin, and picking the sega cd batman returns is impossible on tgcd.the obnly front sega genesis failed a bit on is arcade titles.
aryinc 2 years ago
Riot Zone began as a 1991 Sega arcade game which isn't a rip off SoR, if anything SoR is the evolution of it... but they're still both rip offs of Final Fight.
There are many PCE shooters that look and/or play nicer than TFIV. If you truly mean better "overall" and not just "the part(s) PSIV excells at", then yes, many PCE RPGs look better. How many Batman & Robin-style parallax 3D games are there for Genesis?
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
how many titles same as this are on pc engine and what are those games, sapphire, that game totally unimpressed me.for an 8 bit core system its good but really it lacks comercial goodness like earthworm jim and it lack games like gunstar or others.anyone ever seen rocket knight adventure in action on pc,i didnt and rip or no rip riot zone plain sucks anyone with eyes can see that it looks like crap, and sor just isn't crap but straight forward candy.
aryinc 2 years ago
I'm not sure what you mean by "same as this".
Its like trying to convince people that Sword of Sodan isn't teh best Genesis game.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
yeah snes had transparencies.and snes had more then 1000 colors in screen while nec has 512 as a pallet equal to the genesisi, stil i don't know why it is so rare for a genesis to put more then 64 colours in screen and a technically simpeler system like the tg16 said to put al 512 in screen.,while i never seen that in game.but colours in screen depends on how it's beem show on screen like the md1 can blend colours into transparencies.snes is superior to pce.
aryinc 2 years ago
The Genesis can't get close to 64 colors on screen without shadow/highlight transparencies or glitch-like tricks that only work for stills. Super high color Genesis game color counts are in the 40's.
The master palette numbers are only the available colors to choose from. Each system uses 16 color palettes and has the same number of unique sets they can use for sprites and for bgs.
MD: 4 + 4 = <64
SNES: 8 + 8 = <256
PCE: 16 + 16 = <512
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
no over 50 alien soldier gunstar, serious and with shadow highlight over 100,toy story the pictures in between are good examples, vectorman with shadow highlight, there are smart developers out there that get many things done even 64 colours simultaineously in screen also have you ever seen red zone on a non 3d system,by trickery many things are possible.i liked the genesis more the snes and pce,1st it had the more comercial games who doesnt want to play road rash etc and it had explosive animation
aryinc 2 years ago
Some do slip into the 50's, but that's still really pushing it. Shadow/highlight can produce a an ingame screenshot that technically has 100+ colors, but it still looks like a 50 color image with a shadow over it. Same with SNES transparencies, which don't look as nice as a real 1000 color game.
Separate from whatever things might need to be done differently when porting from MD to SNES or PCE, the actual graphics themselves can remove compromises made for the MD as well as add extra shading.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
The "blending" is just dithering, which SNES, PCE and arcades also use in small doses, but it works better blending a high number of colors than making up for a low number of colors.
It also relied on the Genesis' awful RF & composite quality to blur everything together since the U.S. was the biggest market. Europe and Japan got to see all the grainy pixels in RGB & S-Video.
If you compare the shared games between SNES & PCE, you'll find as with Genesis games, that most look better on PCE.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
yes the snk titles look best on pce still not perfect but pretty damn close, sore that it where those meager snk games.the pce is quit powerfull.
aryinc 2 years ago
I think that the Sega-CD has the nicest 3D of any 16-bit console, SNES games included, but it's still just a single unpopular genre.
I could rattle of things in PCE games that you can't find or aren't as good on Genesis/MD, but my point is that they're the same class overall.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
yeah sorely it isn't fully potentialized as what it could do,sega killed theyre quality.
aryinc 2 years ago
Since you like using similar or shared titles as examples, why not compare the MD and PCE versions of Darius 2, Lords of Thunder, Langrisser, Castlevania, Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury 2/Special, Forgotten Worlds, Tatsujin, Gain Ground, Monster Lair, Double Dragon II, Afterburner II, World Heroes, or Bomberman '94,?
I'm not saying that the PCE pwns the Genesis, but one doesn't make the other look 8-bit and anything a port from one to the other might lose could be replaced by a unique improvement.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
all aracde game in my opinion sega its weakest ports to home.okay sice we talk arcade outrun? strider?,sega just failed me a bit on arcade games pushing sega its limits, but when i call gunstar and alien soldier the tgcd gest a heartattack, ristar aggain batman and robin tf4 musha streets of rage series, and mostly the genesis has its advantage of way more channels the tg16.if you think pc engine is that powerfull try gunstar with al its animation a tg16 with or without arcade card it won't run.
aryinc 2 years ago
Sega arcade ports are fine, it's just the colorful/detailed stuff like CPS-1 games that play to the Genesis' biggest weakness(es).
Gunstar Heroes has repetitive graphics to save on space and onscreen color and relies on special effects to avoid real animation. It's still a cool looking game, but it's built around the Genesis' strengths/weaknesses. Many PCE games also toss around lots of stuff and do it with more color/shading than the Genesis can do.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
offcourse like all say and vectormnan plain sucks to,are you going to threw bonks at me,name some good examples im intrested.i would love to see earth worm jim 2 on pc engine exact same quality as the genesis, even nec said the system was made simple but at it's time it was revolutionary.what sega did in the arcades in that time was insane in 1986 3d and in 1990 a 32bit monster they where ridiculeous ahead of theyre time.
aryinc 2 years ago
EWJ could have the graphics dramatically improved, even if the bg layering wasn't done the same way. Replicating a game EXACTLY means limiting it to the original flaws as well and ignoring what a different console could improve.
NEC didn't design the PCE, they only manufactured it. The PCE was released in 1987 yet it continued to have some of the most impressive 16-bit games all the way into 1996.

The pre-Sega-CD PCE CD systems may have needed to use a system card, but by the time the Sega-CD came out the Duo systems had Super CD capability built-in and even if ACD games later required the Arcade Card, There's still more hooking up to do with a Sega-CD combo, including two ac adaptors.

aryinc 2 years ago
The CDX came later, but the point is that it's no big deal sticking in a card/cart, just as you mentioned doing with a CDX.
There are so few Arcade Card and U.S. exclusive HuCard games that an unmodded PCE Duo system can play over 700 of the 700 and some odd games available without using a system card.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
i know i could play almost any game on a unmodded turbo duo.i,m missing the system like i miss my neo geo,it's all good except for my wallet.i can buy 10 great genesis games for the price of sapphire, offcourse i can get those cheaper games like street fighter etc on pc engine for barely nothing.i think genesis was my easiest way out and childhood.when i''m searfching for a disney game or a earthworm jim alike or final fight alike game on pc enigne i can search but barely find.
aryinc 2 years ago
It's true that the strengths that commercial Genesis and SNES games stressed weren't priorities in most PCE games, but there are still plenty that do, along with all the other pros that PCE CD is known for.
That and the less popular outside-of-Japan genres like RPG, Sims, Digital Comic, Mahjong, Board Game and really, even shooters.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
The Genesis is actually worse at handling interactive/real action (objects with collision), which is why games like TFIV suffer from slowdown. The PCE has twice the MIPS. However, due to poor design at times, more PCE games have spots of flicker/breakup since it uses sprites for more stuff (like making layered bgs).
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
so actually tf4 plain out sucks and looks sucky and has no feel to it what so ever,i think it looked beyond gates of thunder and set better music with a card then gates of thunder did on cd medium, but thats just taste.
aryinc 2 years ago
The Genesis has the same number of FM channels as the PCE has for whatever it wants. The rest is SMS sound and a single channel for samples that the entire game's sound often has to freeze for just to play a single effect.
The PCE can do any number of high quality simultaneous sampled sounds. See my last video for an example of a super high quality single channel PCE sampled sound.
superpcenginegrafx 2 years ago
true but the pc engine had psg channels like a nes,i think pc engine has more similar music to nes then genesis, ever heard skitchin or tf4 or comix zone blasting out of a pc engine, while it's similair to nes it has it's advantages cause i liked the sound of many nes games better the snes or genesis, silver surfer for that point.
aryinc 2 years ago
Do you know what the Arcade Card is? None of the PCE CD system cards or the CD-ROM upgrade the PCE hardware whatsoever (unlike the Sega-CD). Technically, they're more limited than a cart/card, because the games have to load segments at a time. All PCE CD games are pure PCE and could be put on to HuCards.

The GEN/MD version is in no way as good as the TG-16 version. The lack of colors are the most obvious, voices are terrible, music not up to par.
I own both. The only thing the MD version has over the TG version is more bass ans some cool boss stages. The loss of color is what kills it for me.
mungrin 3 years ago
as i said on another vid, the tg16, or pce version, THE ORIGINAL is mush better in every way, say for the boss fight at the end of crash. all crush has is a stupid 30 second cutscene of the lizard queen blowing up, and the witch falling into an eternal sleep
sephirothjenova999 3 years ago
You guys that say the TG16 version is better obviously dont own the actual games (screw emulation) Genesis version is better in every way.
mathesar73 3 years ago
So you think that the gameplay, main board tiles, sampled sound effects and music are better on Genesis?
Genesis fans are usually the first to trash the Genesis version.
Doesn't the entire music stop every time the Genesis version runs a sampled sound effect or something as well?
superpcenginegrafx 3 years ago
I have never heard a clear Genesis Sample, and my PC emulators actually enhance the sound (not to mention video with filters). All voices sound scratchy and are recorded at low sample rates. Listen to Sonic at the beginning when it says "SEGA!", or any game with voices. They all sound bad. Devil's Crash is an inferior port in every way, not to mention Devil's Crush plays full screen the full time, where as the score takes up part of the screen in Crash. Devil's Crush kills Crash, nuff said.
ricsim78 3 years ago
Developers didn't usually use high quality samples in 16-bit console games to save on space.
The Genesis has a single sound channel dedicated to samples that do them about as good as the PCE or SNES can.
But it can only run 1 at a time at full quality. Multiple samples reduce the quality capability, I'm guessing proprtionate to the number of samples running at once.
superpcenginegrafx 3 years ago
I know how Genesis works, it cannot do samples at a high enough rate. It has inferior voice abilities compared to SNES especially, and TG-16. Genesis sounds very authentic to older arcade games because it uses very similar or the exact same FM Synthesizer that were used. But even with one digital sample, none of them are clear compared to Turbo and SNES. If it could do one voice clear, the "Sega!" voice on Sonic would be clear, it crackles like all voices do.
ricsim78 3 years ago
Well, if the Genesis voice was done right, then it sounded fine, even better than SNES voices.
Genesis can do samples at sampling rates of up to 37 khz, though 12-16 khz was average. SNES does samples 32 khz, but they're often muffled out.
A handful of games, tho, didn't do them right, so they sound grainy.
Oh, and the Gameboy Advance uses 8-bit samples just as the Genesis does. However, GBA games have much more cartridge space, so they sound better. Like the Genesis, samples average 16 khz.
ChryslerCruiser 3 years ago 2
The Genesis can do good quality samples, but it can only play one at a time without fractioning the quality.
superpcenginegrafx 3 years ago
Most PC engine games used timer interupts for sampled sounds, with the smallest loop setting (1024 cpu cycles). This limited the sample rate to only 7 Khz, so in reality most Genesis games used higher quality samples. Badly coded sample routines made them sound scratchy though.
BTW, my new PC engine emulator currently has some problem with samples (next thing to improve)
Ahle2 3 years ago
Yes, can your PC Engine emulator play 15.7khz sample off the hsync interrupt?
malducci 2 years ago
The Genesis/MD version runs at a higher resolution than the PCE/TG version thus the " full screen the full time" comment isn't accurate--they both have the same amount of playfield on-screen, but the MD/Gen rev squeezes more onto the screen at once.
The MD/Gen rev also has more actual boards to play on than the PCE which, I'd think, would count for something, right? And the graphics have been touched up which, at least to me, makes them look much more impressive than on PCE.
ECMIM 3 years ago

See the description for a link to the full quality download.
The MD version has higher quality redrawn bonus stages.

Actually the Megadrive version is called Devil Crash MD, not Devil's Crash.

You're right. I sometimes misspell the MD title in quick posts since they're sao similar. :P

Thanks a bunch for putting this up here! Would you happen to have mp3 files of these songs, and, if so, would it be possible for me to obtain them?

You can download mp3's of each soundtrack on my website.

One more thing to mention, sampled sound on the Genesis was clearly inferior than in the PC Engine.
HSeganfredo 3 years ago
The Genesis can do single samples as good as the PCE and SNES. It just can't do multiple samples at full quality.
superpcenginegrafx 3 years ago
-The Genesis had 6 FM audio channels + 4 PSG channels (got no info about sampling channels though they probably there is some capacity since many games used it), whereas the PC Engine had 6 PSG audio channels, with the capacity of turning any of them into a sampling channel.
Snes game later and kicked the ass of both systems, even tough the PC Engine palette remained superior.
HSeganfredo 3 years ago
Most SNES samples are muffled by the hardware and don't sound as clear as good Genesis & PCE samples.
It can still stretch out recycled samples a lot further than the other consoles though.
superpcenginegrafx 3 years ago
Thanks for the input. PCE games always looked more colorful than Genesis ones. About the sampling capabilities, I think Genesis is the worst, everything sounds grainy, but its FM+PSG chips does a good job and overall speaking about the audio I stick with the Genesis against a PCE comparisson.
Aboute the SNES sampling I never but much attention. There are quite a few posts here at youtube with such comparissons, I will give a try. There is a very interesting comparisson using Street FighterII
HSeganfredo 3 years ago

HSeganfredo 3 years ago
Many colorful PCE games have 60 colors or less onscreen. The bottlenecks for both systems are the sub-palette restrictions.
Few PCE games display over 100 colors at a time.

The PC-Engine does sound a lot more dynamic than the MD version. Strange, Technosoft are peerless for the MD but this ain't so good.
maz12004 3 years ago
Call it what you want but the "illusion" you refer to blows anything away that the turbo8 bit was capable of. I mean when Golden Axe came out it blew everything away and then came TG16s answer....legendry axe. I rest my case.
lsttype 3 years ago

There were so many more for each platform that the turbo 16 could not even attempt.
lsttype 3 years ago
LoL?!?!? Sonic 3d, F-zero, Super Mario????
3D ????
Mode 7 graphics arent real 3d, its more like the Illusion of and Sonic 3d was a very shitty game, 2d with a bad view angle.
Virtua Racing may be the only one that was in real 3d. And NO ONE bought a Genesis or a Snes for 3d Graphics, so don't talk such crap.
And Btw: Donkey kong country wasn't 3d too
Sheepy007 3 years ago
Never saw any 3D type games for the turbo16. Oh I guess cause it was just a turbo8 bit system. The Sega sold well enough in japan to release sega CD and 32x. Is that cause it was a dud? What came out for turbo grafx after turbo cd???? Nothing it just died and went away. the games were all 2 dimensional hyped up 8bit games.

Call me one GOOD 3d game for genesis nor Snes.
The Real 3d hype began with the Sony playstation
Sheepy007 3 years ago
I always preferred the Megadrive version more..but they're both incredible..
And not to seem spammy but...anyone know where I can download any of these tracks? Galbadia Temple nor any of my favorite video game soundtrack sites seem to have any..
:(

Between the two versions, I pretty much prefer the MD (Genesis) version due to its crystal-clear quality and epic atmosphere. The PC Engine version sounds as if it were ported from an NES game.
glenbw 4 years ago 3
yea, there are people like you who go on about how PCE music likes more like NES music.

Sorry ChryslerCruiser, I accidentally deleted one of your comments when I went to reply. :(
Anyways, I've recorded the greatest PC Engine sound sample of all time and hope to post it on youtube soon.

I do seem to recall liking the music in Thunder Force 4, though, I've never played thru the entire game.
ParanoiaDragon 4 years ago
The few mp3's I've heard from TFIV sound amazing.
superpcenginegrafx 4 years ago
The BGM is always important and if it can't suck you into the game and add mood then it doesn't matter how good it sounds. Both versions are awesome in their own way. The MD had some good use of the music chip, Thunder Force 4, SoR 2 & 3, Contra:Hard Corps, Phantasy Star IV, etc.
RagingKnight 4 years ago
I personally like the Genesis better. What I can say for sure is that this song would sound awesome if it was played by a band. Put some real drums, keyboard and electric guitar let's say.
GrimKillerPlague 4 years ago
The main problem, is lazy programmers &/or musicians who make not only weak tunes in general, but only do maybe 3 or 4 instruments for a song, like a song on the NES. Also, another problem, for me, is when they don't bother to incorporate sampled drums, since, as I said, the Turbo is weak when it comes to bass, & nice sampled drums really give it some power in that respect.
ParanoiaDragon 4 years ago
To each his own though. Me personally, I've always hated the old whiny arcade sound that the Genesis has as well. It always got on my nerves. For instance, listen to..Contra on the NES, then listen to the arcade. To me, the arcade just sounds horrible, even when it does have more sound channels.
ParanoiaDragon 4 years ago
The SNES, of the 3 systems of that generation(Neo Geo was kind of in it's own arena) had the most potential, & can sound incredible, but, it seems like it's less chip music, more flat midi. I personally use midi, but, it blows away what the SNES can do, which is why I say flat. But, once again comes down to good programmers, & there are some absolutly fantastic soundtracks on the SNES thanks to some great coders.
ParanoiaDragon 4 years ago
Have you heard the music in the enhanced Xbox Live Arcade version? It sounds better than the orignal one IMO.
Squirrel3D 4 years ago
There's an Xbox Live version? Interesting, didn't hear about that.

Contra NES crushes the fm arcade, just as the home version of Bloody Wolf's PSG destroys the arcade's fm music.

ParanoiaDragon 4 years ago
Hmm, the Genesis version deffinitly sounds like crap compared to the Turbo Grafx version. Probably partly because the Genesis version was a port, done by Technosoft, rather then by Naxat Soft. And the new screens look terrible in motion, you can't even see the ball most of the time. Way to go Technosoft for ruining a great game!
ParanoiaDragon 4 years ago
And, it deffinitly sounds nothing like the NES, other then the fact that it sounds "warm" as most people put it, as opposed to the ridiculous sounding whiny, tinny sound of the Genesis. That's not to say there aren't games that took advantage of the Genesis chip, but, there's not many.

Personally i dont think the MD could have done any better. That definitely sounds like Technosoft and the music in their games are brilliant. Check out Thunderforce 4 and Elemental Master to see what i mean.
smintjoseph 4 years ago
Having some experience with doing genny music, it's true that FM can sound flat and whiny in the higher octaves but it can easily be helped with psg and combining channels to do echo, you can also do distortion and vibrato effects. In this example the MD version lacks some of those fuzzy sounds but they were all possible, the instrumentation and mixing could be better in a couple of the songs. As for the PCE it sounds warmer but also kind of cheap, lacks bass and that ominous atmosphere that
Alianger 3 years ago
you could achieve easily with FM (check out master of monsters, golden axe 2, gauntlet iv).

A few more good to great sounding games: sword of Vermilion, Gleylancer, Light Crusader, Alien soldier, Hybrid Front, Midnight Resistance, socket, Battle Mania 2, Two Crude Dudes, Mega Turrican and Ristar. :)
Alianger 3 years ago 2
sorry for spamming but what I also meant to say was that the genesis/mega drive seems unsuitable for orchestral or acoustic music, you can't achieve very good strings or acoustic guitar. I don't think a game like super castlevania IV would've ever sounded as good on the MD.
