i'm just saying it sounds like he's in pain it's better then saying he sucked cause if he had a sore thoart he did amazing. at 49 seconds in his voice cracks and he looks like he's in pain. i love them so it wasn't a diss just a statement :)
i think in this song the artist is asking God to help him through a hard time. personally its helped me to accept that i need God's' help and that he will help me.
i pray 4 people who hear this song understand at some point in their lives that it should not be God turning to us or running to us, as the song sings. In fact, the exact opposite should be occurring. As Jesus-followers, how can we sing a song where it is asking for GOd to turn to US?! We should be the ones turning and following. WE are the prodigal.
Passionate, yes. The song is passionate. And catchy. But when should passion ever replace theology? which it has done in the last 30+ years.
ok i was thinking....this is a good psalm, but i'm not sure i could support it being used in corporate worship. This song is very personal, and is expressed from a personal perspective. The whole reason I'm wrestling with it is cuz i'm playing this sunday for my church band, and i was given this song to learn.
i'd appreciate some thoughts from people who understand corporate worship and a theology of worship music.
well..i don't know what corporate worship or the theology of worship music is, but I thing by Mike saying "turn to me" or "run to me", he means that God would not necessarily turn to him like we should be turning to God, but in the sense that he wants God to notice and comfort him, hence the "breaking heart" part. and i guess the "call my name" part is because we want to be close to God. I really don't know if this is right or if this makes sense, so please get back to me on this. God bless 8)
Corporate worship is a time when believers come together to connect with God together, to meet with the Lord. It is not just about singing and hearing a message. I think it is the connection of our hearts to God that really matters. I couldn't see this being sung every Sunday but I think there are ordained times to have the church cry out to God in this way. You can't help but connect your heart when you are singing this song out loud. It is saying Father I believe, help me in my unbelief.
I think that as a worship leader, you want to teach the congregation to be real with God no matter where they are physically and spiritually.
"if you're anything you say you are, would you come close and hold my heart" makes me think of the prodigal son, returning home--His hope was in his father's character that seems to be a cry of his heart that the Father would run to him instead of rejecting him.
Ya this is one of those songs meant for when you just have a breakdown. God doesn't want legalism, he wants us to be straight up with him, just like we would be with the person who is closest to us in our lives. He isn't saying "God you have to do all the work" what I think he is saying is "God yo....I'm balling right now, and I need your help". God isn't this "Thou Shalt Not Pass" kind of guy. By Your Side is in my opinion a very good portrait of God in a song.
THese are some really great responses, guys. I am JUST reading all of them now. It's an awesome struggle, isn't it? I mean, figuring out life with our Lord and trying to stay connected all along. I'm a fan of God's grace, and he knows our hearts. I can only pray for myself that my relationship with God becomes less 'me-focused'. I fear that, living in a world where the focus is always on our own personal gain and personal fulfillment.
Glory to God, this band is pretty nice.

this is live, it's difficult to match the studio quality, and besides, you don't always sing your best everyday
